My 12yo daughter was attacked by a grown woman. My daughter defended herself and the grown woman had the audacity to contact the police. The whole thing was caught on CCTV (busy city centre) yet the police attended our house to threaten my daughter with assault charges. When my daughter reeled off the list of witnesses and the fact it was caught on camera and that SHE would in fact like to press charges against the woman, the police moonwalked. Rather than apologise, empathise or anything else, they admitted they'd seen the footage and said had that footage not existed, she would be getting arrested there and then. We were one a few families of colour, living in a predominantly white area. Go figure

Im a Brit based in the Netherlands for over a decade, and when I first moved to Amsterdam, it really struck me just how low a police presence there is here, and the ones you do see (mostly tootling around in pairs on bikes) remind me very much of the friendly "bobbies on the beat" I grew up with in small towns. You often see them having chats with locals or a laugh n joke with young kids, its great. But then its very much part of Dutch identity that no one is above anyone else in society, and a very foundational core value is to "be normal" and fit in. There is never a sense of "us and them" with the police. The only exception I've ever witnessed (and it was horrendous) was during the covid lockdowns, when riots broke out. Most of the time, everyone gets along great.

"Woke" just means "aware of and opposed to systemic discrimination". So you can sort of see why Braverman is against "woke policing": from the conservative point of view, the police force is meant to be one of the main instruments by which the state imposes that discrimination, to keep people "in their place". Wilhoit's Law says that "Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect". If the police genuinely became anti-discriminatory and committed to equitable policing (highly unlikely in the UK), that would be an existential threat to conservatism.

We have framed political options as a left-right divide, but this division is actually between democracy and authoritarianism. There are many people who believe they are on the right but are actually authoritarian in their attitudes and do not clearly understand democracy. Here are some examples: Some people believe that democracy means that the majority always gets its way. This is not true. In a democracy, the minority also has rights, and the majority cannot simply ignore them. For example, the UK government has been reluctant to hold a second Brexit vote, even though the majority of the population now regrets voting to leave the European Union. Other people believe that democracy means that the government should do whatever the people want. This is also not true. In a democracy, the government has a responsibility to protect the rights of all citizens, even those who disagree with the majority. For example, the UK government has been criticized for its crackdown on protests, which some people see as an attempt to silence dissent. Here are some other real-life examples of authoritarian tendencies in the UK: The government's decision to prorogue Parliament in 2019, which was seen by many as an attempt to prevent Parliament from scrutinizing the government's Brexit plans. The government's plans to give itself the power to interfere with the judiciary. The government's attempts to silence critics through the use of libel laws and other legal measures. These are just a few examples of how the UK government is moving towards an authoritarian model of government. It is important to be aware of these trends and to stand up for democracy.

3:10 - loads of people object to police offices being over familiar with the public. They are supposed to be policing the event, not joining in the festivities. Their job isn't to virtue signal that they are down with the people and our mates, it's to earn our respect with their ability to execute their duties. The reality of modern policing is that it is utterly failing, with whole areas of criminality being things the police don't even bother with anymore. If they had nailed even the basics of the job, maybe spending time on PR exercises might be a little bit more forgivable.

Strictly speaking, I would say that police officers dancing at any carnival is wrong. They should be doing their job and protecting the public and looking out for thieves and such. That said, police officers are also human, and a bit of public relations, particularly in an area like Notting Hill, does no damage at all.

It has increased by 6% in the year ending December 2022 (to 49,265 offences) compared with the year ending December 2021, while remaining below pre-coronavirus pandemic levels. More knife crime than anyone would like, but it has gone down in recent years more than up.

I think there's another angle about why people complain about police dancing at pride or carnival. A lot of people see Police as defending British people and they fundamentally don't see black and LGBTQ+ people as British. Police defending, protecting and reaching out to minorities means that a lot of people have to either view those minorities as 'British' and equal to them or they have to argue that the Police are letting an outside force change their country. There's a reason people like Braverman constructed the word 'Woke' to be a placeholder for 'enemy trying to change the country'.
