I agree i even read the ratings were through the roof for that time. I am not sure but they had a 1.8 to spurts of 3.2 watching so that seems amazing to me.

I still watch it to this day In fact I am about to start re watching season 1 this evening. Absolutely fantastic show I own the Special Edition 2 series mosaic box set I have genuinely lost count to how many times I have watched this series. Very much agreed it is such a shame it ended after only 2 seasons but at least we have season 1 and 2 which are the greatest representation of Ancient Rome ever put to screen.

What He says is burned into my brain "And I have an angery Mob, who will roast and eat your men of quality in the ashes of the Senate house" not saying it is better than Shakespeare or Brando but just adds to it.

James Purefoy brought Mark Antony's character to life in such a way, it made it believable that the events turned out the way that they did (sub plots etc). Such a talented actor. And you never quite knew just how he was going to react in some scenes. The real Antony could have been like this. As for HBO, they make everything that's worth watching lets imo.

Oh come now, he might be the best but he certainly have more than a few rivals! Kevin McKidd for one, might not be as pretty as you would like, but he displays brilliant acting skills all throughout the series. Its rare to see an actor these days who can realistically display all of the human emotions as convincingly as he does while simultaneously having to live himself into the role of a man from a bygone time. Although Purefoy was my favorite as well i think the entire cast preformed brilliantly, especially the talent in the minor roles, such as Timon the horse Jew, and Posca the Greek slave, really made the series come together into the brilliant masterpiece that it is. Its certainly one of the most underappreciated shows of our time, to this day its still beyond me why a third season was never made... Even with ol James out of the picture.

There is not a bad actor in this serie. Maybe guy who acted oldest Octavian is not that great but probably only cause younger one did it good. Anyway great show, I'm watching the last episode and it's real pity they didn't make this longer. There are situations they could use to make it much longer. For example Game of thrones use some lame situations to make a whole episode. Whole 5th season was pretty boring compared to previous ones and could fit to 2-3 episodes. But maybe this is what made Rome great. Anyway one more season wouldn't be too much, just perfect.

Nah he is not seeing as rome ended in 2007 and game of thrones started in 2011. If I can remember correctly he stated it was a joke after someone responded to that tweet. In all honesty, who would James Purefoy cast in game of thrones? Really hard to think when he seems very romelike in character and looks.

Magnificent actor in every way. That final episode where Antony dies - he was just breathtaking! That howl that erupts from him when he is TOLD that Cleopatra was dead, defies description and even still gives me goosebumps all these LONG years later after I first saw it. He was a fantastic in his most recent work, altered carbon. He was just to spend tastic in that as he was in Rome, and I highly recommend watching the first season.

Horatio Nelson he was great (they were mostly great) but he undersold such a monumental figure as Caesar in my opinion. His performance just seemed too ordinary for one of the most influential people in history. This is a small complaint but alongside polly walker and james purefoy he can't be best in my opinion edit: young Octavian was also great but I didn't care for old Octavian. He was unlikeable and made an OK job of an easy role. Maybe this was confounded by the poor portrayals/characterisation of Agrippa and the smarmy chap that does a deal with posca.

This man is such a GREAT actor and he can make acting look so easy. I have seen him in so many roles and he did justice to every one of them. He doesn't just act his role, he BECOMES the role and every dialogue delivery, facial expression, timing and action flows easily through him. While watching him in any role, sometimes I forget he is an actual person who does this for a living and not Mark Antony or Simon Kane or Joe Carroll or Laurens Bancroft.
