Once you stated that the premises are independent, I was able to understand how they would fit into other systems of thought. Thanks!

Super appreciated this video! My ethics professor feels the need to use insanely complex wording and I end up not even focusing anymore because I get so discouraged within the first couple minutes of him talking. *subscribes*

As side note to "different cultures have different views". I think that saying that II World War start in 1939 with Third Reich invading Second Poland Republic, is not best description of history. Since Second Sino-Japanese war start in 1937 and not end to 1945, I think better is to say, that in 1939 II World War start in Europe. Or, what I think is even better description, that it was a part of Forty Years War 1912 - 1949. I'm from Poland and I quite interesting in East Asia culture, history and philosophy (in that order). This encounter, mostly by my polish colleague, change my view on this history period.

Well, I was at first tempted to say that, given what the video is actually about, this is some nitpicking. But I'll be charitable and say that what you're talking about is far beyond the scope of the topic. Anything to say about the actual topic of the video?

@@GregoryBSadler About video, I can only say that I first hear about James Rachels, so I very appreciate that you do videos about him. To this point his analysis is very clearly and correct, for I can say.

Isn't there a point where one of the rejoinders becomes "nuh-uh!" and doesn't elaborate beyond that? Like, it doesn't treat the postulation on its own terms? I'm speaking to rejoinder number three. Just because there are cultural practices that are widely recognized as wrong does not mean that those practices are necessarily wrong, especially if we treat the point that there are no objective standards for morality seriously. It's not a refutation so much as a response, that as far as I can tell, boils down to "yeah, but western morality is right" (I'm reminded of the Monty Python bit where the man is paying for an argument but gets a contradiction). In fact, the direction that rejoinder number three takes is scary to me; at best, it's an ad populam argument, and at worst, by suggesting that the West is "broader" than a single culture and saying that they West is approaching a "universal" status, how are we not simply maintaining a view of colonization/imperialism? I suspect similar arguments have been made to justify the very same kinds of practices that Rachels condemns. Or on more reflection, maybe I'm concerned that there is a begging the question here. In attempting to prove that there can be objectively better moral choices, Rachels assumes that there are objectively better moral choices, and then points to examples of such (ill-defined) "objectively" better moral choices. I'm just having a hard time buying this whole argument.

Enlightenment, emancipation....nice developments but according to cultural relativism they didn't 'improve' our (western) society at all...
@GregoryBSadler
@GregoryBSadler 4 жыл бұрын
A bit overblown there. A cultural relativist could say they improved western society, according to the norms or values of western society.

@@GregoryBSadler Suppose there's a (current) society 'B' somewhere else on the world similar to 16th century Europe (before enlightenment and emancipation). A cultural relativist would then have to say: we're not a 'better' culture than 'B', but on the other hand we did improve compared to 16th c. Europe, now there's a contradiction I would say.

tmjcbs contradiction in what framework. And don’t get me wrong. I’m not a relativist. It’s just that if you’re going to criticize it, you want to do it well, not go after easy low-hanging fruit that’s been discussed to death

@@GregoryBSadler Hi Gregory, great video. I've found myself disagreeing with Harris more and more recently. Just curious - Which of his philosophical ideas in particular do you think are most objectionable? I'm assuming you must have been turned off him somehow since you now ignore him.

@@freem8son86 I got turned off early on, years back, when he first started getting popular, and I saw the same old reductionist tropes being peddled in a slightly newer guise. Frankly, given that I spend the bulk of my time working with primary sources, creating content, teaching, and working with clients, I don't envision devoting any of that time to rereading Harris

@@GregoryBSadler Given the popularity and public significance of Sam Harris, I would think it wise to pay attention to Harris and provide a thorough and charitable analysis of his views and arguments. I find the intellectual disregard for popular thinkers to be short-sighted and at times infantile (I think of Chomsky's haughty refusal to engage in a cordial conversation with Harris and his bleak public remarks about Jordan Peterson without elaboration as clear examples of this). The public deserves a lively and respectful discussion of popular ideas however reductionistic, fallacious or misguided those ideas may be. How else are we to move our society towards truth, or at the very least away from falsehoods and bad arguments?
