A role like Alan Shore could go so terribly but James Spader elevates it to another level. If someone else played Alan Shore, there is the potential for him to be uncouth, vulgar and honestly make a persons skin crawl. But James Spader plays him with such finesse and grace. Alan Shore is a Magnificent Bastard to the highest degree.

Alan Shore may be one of the greatest characters ever to grace a TV show. He gets away with being a cheeky bastard because he's got so much heart deep down as we see a lot of in Boston Legal. He treads the line between cocky and confident but most of all is loving and loyal to those who deserve it. He isn't capable of betrayal because he only establishes meaningful relationships with those he intends to back until the end of time.

She says he won't last 2 weeks. He just kept his client out of jail. She did nothing useful, when he offers to let her take over, she lasts less than 10 seconds before he has to take over again. She says he doesn't understand authority, yet he meets with two people with authority and they do exactly what he wants. She calls him arrogant but she is the one insulting someone who outclassed her every time. As for being corrupt, where is her evidence? She gets angry at his reference to her disciplining him, but she made that threat. She didn't carry it though and didn't apologize for it. She's weakness and she's angry that he sees it.

This is based on an actual event. On March 8, 2004, Todd Bertuzzi grabbed the back of Steve Moore's jersey and punched him in the back of the head. As Moore fell unconscious to the ice, Bertuzzi followed him to the ice with his forearm on the back of Moore's head, driving it into the ice. This resulted in 3 fractured vertebrae and a concussion for Moore. Bertuzzi was suspended for 20 games and forfeited over half a million dollars in salary. Moore attempted to come back to the game, skating in practices and working out with the team. He continued to suffer chronic concussion symptoms, and he never played professional hockey again. I've loved hockey since I was a kid. I play hockey as a goalie. Sometimes there are fights, but the Bertuzzi/Moore incident (and this fictionalization of it) was premeditated battery. However, some good has come from it, even if it isn't a direct cause-effect relationship. Fighting in the NHL is way down, next to eliminated. It occasionally happens still, but not nearly as often as it used to. Of course, there are some mouthbreathers who lament this as the death of "old-fashioned, hardnosed hockey" or some sort of "softening" of the sport. Me? I'm glad that all professional sports are finally taking head trauma seriously. CTE kills.

They would have had to write and produce this within a week or two of the incident. "Comings and Goings" aired in middle April 2004. Sometimes episodes are written and finished just days before air, but that became less and less common after the 80s. Usually everything's in the can for the first half the series before premiere week, then the next set of 10 to 12 are done in r The fall.

@@body_by_depuy it is possible they wrote and produced at the last minute. West Wing did. However there are coincidences, with pending foreshadowing. China Syndrome came out just before Three Mile Island almost as if it was planned to reinforce the movie or anti nuclear power sentiment. Two Dennis the Menace comic strips debuted on the same day in the US and UK by different artists with different characters...but same name. Pro Hockey fighting had been escalating for years...seemed inevitable that a premeditated attack would happen...

@@jeronimo196 I rewatched Boston Legal a few years ago. Despite the very good writing and very good acting, there are many parts that have become very uncomfortable to watch. Both Alan and Denny are practically sexual predators, frequently harassing and even assaulting women. Of course, playing top lawyers at a high-end law firm, such behaviour can hardly be considered surprising, but it isn't the kind of thing we can just brush aside anymore. And the fact that we are more conscious of this now compared to then isn't diminishment: it's maturing.

@@nicholassmith7984 you find some parts uncomfortable to watch - I understand that. Nevertheless, those parts are both true to life as it was then and evoking strong emotions. So, the question is, would it be a better show if those parts were sanitized? I think not. Contrast with "The Boys" S2. Extremely edgy R-rated show, blood and gore everywhere. Stormfront is a super-powered surviving nazi, evil enough to kill entire black families - yet not evil enough to say "nigger". In a way, according to Amazon's guidelines of storytelling, I've just committed more racism in the youtube comment section, than Stormfront could ever do in their show.

54, played hockey my whole life, D1 college and coached a HS team. Watched a Rangers game with Bobby Orr once, asked him why they allowed fighting, I knew the answer but wanted to hear his answer. It sells tickets. It's simply that violence is fascinating. It is strange that grown people, the league, embraces it though. Speaks to the mind set of those in charge

Bull shit, we were fighting in hockey when you had 12 people watching on a frozen pond in the 1900's and protective equipment was a pair of leather mitts. You fight in hockey, because that's part of the game, plain a simple, it's fun. You Americans do not understand the game, very few Americans did, bobby Clarke was one of the few who did, get your teeth knocked out, smile and come back for more the next period. Sell tickets my ass..
