A great tune!

I wonder if James learned this from Spider John Koerner. Both versions are very similar.

Sounds like the Tom Rush version to me. Especially the open tuning.

Tom Rush has two great versions. The original is from one of his first couple “home recording” style albums where he had his buddy on a washtub bass. I think this is where JT probably picked it up. Who Tom learned it from, I’m not sure but probably Dave Van Ronk or John Koerner himself. Tom does a version later on the live album Trolling for Owls that is based more fully on Spider John’s version, and Tom’s rendition on that album is absolutely ridiculously good. I highly recommend listening to them both if you can find ‘em. Loving this JT version and very excited to hear it, as I didn’t know he had done this one. As usual, the cleanest fingerpicking from James.

No, it is nothing like Koener's version. He probably got it from the 1959 Dave Van Ronk album (where I first heard it). Dave's arrangement was probably from Leadbelly's recording.
