The Tanglewood Music Festival in Stockbridge, MA celebrated one of its most beloved figures John Williams' 90th birthday on Saturday, August 20, 2022. The program featured a selection of Williams' concert music composed for the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops, along with many beloved film themes. Guests artists included Yo-Yo Ma, Branford Marsalis, Itzhak Perlman and more.
James Taylor performed Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Getting to Know You" from The King and I and with his good friend, Yo-Yo Ma performed his classic lullabye, "Sweet Baby James" a favorite at Tanglewood.

Thirty-odd years ago, our infant daughter began crying one night. None of the usual tricks (including singing to her) worked and twenty hours later she was still crying hard. We hit the ER who, of course, referred us to her doctor. He also found nothing wrong and we found ourselves wide awake and frazzled with this insanely-crying infant, 36 hours after she'd started. But then, on came a JT fundraising concert on TV. Over the crying, I softly sang along with James on this song, and bam! She was out like a light and slept for a solid 12 hours. Maybe it was just her time to conk out; but I think we were saved by JT and 'Sweet Baby James'.

Amazing how the same song, with the same lyrics and same melody, changes so much with perspective. A song written & flawlessly performed by a young musical genius with a sometimes tortured soul made us feel both his joy, and at times his angst back then. Now, those identical notes & words, filtered thru the fingers and pipes of older, seasoned, treasured troubador, pull at our hearts with memories of where & what we were when he played the soundtrack of our life. A priceless gift we all got to share. Long may you run, Papa James. Thanks for sharing.

I was at this celebration live and it was amazing. I got to see JT live, who ive listened to my entire childhood. To have him and Yo Yo Ma together was amazing. Then having Itzhak Perlman perform Schindler's List live and get to hear A New Hope Throne Room live. Then to get Superman theme played live during a movie tribute to John Williams. Finally, to get to sing Happy bday to John and have John Williams himself end the night conducting Raider's March, an amazing night ill never forget.

Fifty years ago, I was in 9th grade. I enjoyed your music, James, and I thought it was cool. I related to much of it. Twenty five years ago, I replaced many of your albums with CD versions. I thought it was cool that I was still listening to this great music. Listening to you now, the feeling has changed. I now feel privileged to hear your still clear voice, mellowed by time. The cello's baritone voice, so very near human in tone and timbre, was the perfect trio. I particularly enjoyed the violinist in the background that closed her eyes to take it all in without distraction. And, of course, this is one of my favs of JT. Excellent job!
