Lyrics:
Come home early after class
Don't be hangin round the back of the schoolyard
I've been called up by your teacher
She said she can't even reach you cause you're so far
You've been talking with your fists
We didn't raise you up like this, now did we?
There've been changes in this house
Things you don't know about in this family
It don't make sense, but nevertheless
You gotta believe us, it's all for the best
It don't make sense, the way things go
Son you should know
Sometimes mums and dads fall out of love
Sometimes two homes are better than one
Some things you can't tell your sister cause she's still too young
Yeah you'll understand
When You Love Someone
There ain't no one here to blame and nothing's gonna change with your old friends
Your room will stay the same cause you'll only be away on the weekends
It don't make sense but nevertheless
You gotta believe us, it's all for the best
It don't make sense, it don't add up
But we'll always love you, no matter what
Sometimes mums and dads fall out of love
Sometimes two homes are better than one
Some things you can't tell your sister cause she's still too young
Yeah you'll understand
When You Love Someone
When You Love Someone
Come home early after class
Don't be hangin round the back of the schoolyard
And if we're crying on the couch
Don't let it freak you out, it's just been so hard
Sometimes mums and dads fall out of love
Sometimes the best intentions just ain't enough
Some things you can't tell your sister cause she's still too young
Yeah you'll understand
When You Love Someone
When You Love Someone

River Golbrock I Hate my moms house and love my dads I just got out of my counselors room and talked to him about it I showed him a note and he told me that if I ever hit that hard again to call him and he’ll pull the plug and I’ll go over to my dads house and if my mom doesn’t let him do that he taking me to the hospital. Life’s rough I’m also just starting high school and trying to get good grades. Update: My mom doesn’t want me spending a week at my dads and stuff is getting tense and my dad may be take it to court to let me do this I’ll make another update later once everything has happened Update 2: Can’t believe this got so many likes things are going good I’ve been getting good grades, I’m able to have restbit(breaks when I need them) at my moms house I’ve learned to stay in my room as much as possible and that usually reduces the drama and my relationship is better with my mom and there’s 50/50 custody now. I also just got a truck for $1000 and fixed it up and it’s now worth probably $3000. Life’s going a lot better thanks for all the support :) Update 3: Things went crazy. I’ve been df my dads for probably about a month now full time after my mom went psycho and when we didn’t come back she threatened to get her attorneys involved so we went ahead and filed a change of circumstances and are fighting to get to choose where we want to live. This stress is too much and I barely holding it together at home and in school. It’s got to the point where I don’t even study anymore and barely turn my assignments in on time. I’ll try and update after the court case

"somethings you can't tell your sister because she's still too young" Is the reason why I loved this song so dearly. I grew up in a really heavy household and being the eldest I didn't want to spread any of the stuff I found out because of their ages. So while they walked around thinking was okay I was being my mother's therapist and taking all of this in at the ages of 11-17.

Yeah I related to this too in the sense that when I would hear my parents argue I would make sure my little brother is fine and shut the door sometimes it would be really tough because nobody in my family really knew until they were about to get divorced and I tried to act like all was good all at 9/10 and feeling so bad for my mom hearing her cry and tryna comfort her was tough

My younger sister is oblivious to all the problems in the world as well. Sometimes she doesn't understand that flaring up their arguments won't make the love return. Every time I tell her to stop she doesn't care. But she doesn't know. I have found out so much that just make everything cave in. I will hold it together until it can't be held anymore.

It is a bit different for me since my parents never separated (but still thought about it and argued a lot. I am the youngest but my brother has autism so I kind of became the older one. He is now 21 and I am 20 and my parents are still together, also I am the only one they go to when they need to talk out since my brother doesn't understand. But when I need to talk it is too much. And the times we sat in the car and they argued I gave my brother my headphones so he didn't have to hear it all and he never wanted to take his cause he was afraid to lose them

@kaikalter Speak to your school counsellor about your own feelings, for yourself. And then also ask them for the right way to tell your younger siblings what is going on. Once you speak to your younger siblings about your parents problems, you may find out they understand the situation better than you, and they were playing it cool for Your benefit! ❤🙋‍♀️

this song was written because when James was teaching music, he found out that a young 12 year old boys parents were getting divorced and he found out before the boy did and he needed a way to tell him without it sounding so bad so James wrote this song... found this out yesterday at the O2 - it's really touching. first of all i found out about james yesterday night at a concert. He told us the story about how he wrote this song about his friend when his parents were getting divorced. and this song perfectly explains the situation and it has so much emotion, every time i listen to this is makes me tear up. second, his voice is so amazing, and every song he sings is filled with emotion and you can clearly tell he's not just writing for the money. Keep up the work james and i promise you that you will rise

The little sister line always gets me because I was that little sister, and my mom used to get really angry and my brother would take most of it, and even when she would pick a fight with me he would still step in and try and get her attention on something he did. He always tried to take the worst stuff and I can never seem to be able to express how much of an amazing brother he is but I would do anything to be able to pay him back and say thank you

Who else is sad at the beginning of the song, starts crying when he chases his dad's car, starts balling when he beats up his bed, and then is just a mess by the time he is crying in his mom's shoulder?....then when he hugs his dad..... there are like no words that you can even use to explain what the freaking heck you are feeling and look like at that point....

My parents divorced around 8 years ago when I was around 4 maybe 6, and I understood everything that was going on. My one friend at school doesn't know how I handle going from one house to the other. I have been doing it for 8 years so its normal to me and my parents are friends now. So everything is good and I know I'm fortunate to have my parents that are divorced be friends because I know its not always like that.

@@antonellayaacoub2169 No, never in the child's eyes. Every kid that comes from a broken family, hates that they have 2 homes. It just feels like you have these two different worlds. So different. It's just too painful for anyone that hasn't gone through it to realize.

@@hollywelch5168 Yeah but would you rather be emotionly scared from seeing your parents fight every night? Kids may hate it, I didn't, but its less traumatic/ not at all trumatic as its like your living in two calm places and not one angry one. Edit: Its not that bad (for me). I've allways lived in 2 homes even when my parents were togher which to be honest, they were allways argueing because my mum is so antagonistic and starting something so all I've ever know is my parents argue hard core but others don't and I'm fine with it. I must be mentally broken or something to be so chill with all the yelling but at the end of the day, my mums a bitch. She stays with us at our dads even tough were 12 and 11 and they argue loads but its chill. Well, she starts something and my dad gets mad and she just continues. Shes allways picking on me and picking holes and yeah, I'm a bit problomatic, a little rude, sassy but its only cause she gets on my nerves and I put up with it for about a minute till I'm done and can't handle it. She allways slaps me and I try not to fight back but I just snap and need my self protection. She can't be thinking she can get away with it but I only put up with it as a, it doesn't hurt that much and b, I go to a really good school, its outstanding and world classed and its public and I ain't messin' up my future. Yeah, she does put 2 hands on my arm like she wants to break it and kick and pull my hair to physically move me as she allways yells for me to move and its like, no, why should I do what you want if your going to be so rude but why should I care about her oppinion, why should it hurt me knowing my bitchy mother abuses me, why does it even matter that she doesn't love me, that she doesn't treat me right cause I really don't care. See, it's even gotten to the point that I'm not bothered as I know other kids get worse even though us getting treated like this is hella wrong. Letting go was the best deciousn I made and I no longer care about much and its great. I put care into the things I want to put care into and none in to the things I don't want to. There proberly something meantally wrong with me and I am 99% sure I have anxeity well did as it started in 2019 September, start of high school. For the week, I cried at some point in the evening because of high school. Maybe it was worry for the stress or something, IDK, but then it went away and I had felt it came back like in April and then it was gone so I think I have it, just not 100% sure. Sometimes I worry I'm a phsycopath as I care about myself, alot, maybe more then other people but I wouldn't go hurt someone or kill them, I'm only 12. And even then, I like having 2 homes so not every kid is the same.

The thing that’s hard to remember is that it’s not a choice between the way things were and the way they are now. It’s a choice between staying together in one home with bitter, unhappy parents or splitting up into two healthier homes. You can’t force your parents to fall back in love or stay together.

My mom and dad have always been a great couple and they've been so in love for many years, but lately they've been fighting almost every day, basically for nothing, and it's so heartbreaking. My mom is lowkey blamimg me and my sister for making them anxious, thus making them fight. She's also mostly ignoring their problems. My dad says that they've kinda fallen out of love and that he's going to move out in a couple of months or so. There's also my little sister, who I think doesn't fully understand the seriousness of the matter, mostly because they fight when she can't hear them and they act like nothing happened afterwards. I try not to let it influence me and not to interfere when they're fighting, but I can't help it sometimes. I usually don't cry at all, but even thinking about this whole thing makes me cry uncontrollably (I'm also crying right now lol). I just want them to stop fighting so much and be the way they were before. I love them both so much, so I try not to get angry at neither of them, but it's hard. Thank you so much for this, I haven't been able to tell anyone and I really needed that.

@@margaretampotsarakou2373 That has too be hard, it really stinks when family members fight especially parents. If its okay with you I would like to pray for you and your family, First I would like to pray that you will be given the strength you need to get through this, and the love and comfort you will need for healing. Two that your family will stay strong and together and find peace with each other, and if your family ends up not staying together that your parents will not be sour toward you, your sister, or each other. I pray that God puts people in your life to help you through this time when you need friends by your side. If you can drive or have a park or a place you can go to hang out, outside of the house with your sister, it might be a good idea to go with her and hang out for awhile once or twice a week, that gives your parents time to figure things out without you guys in the house to hear the fighting. It sometimes helps to try to be on best behavior even though that can be hard especially when there is tension in the house, try to do extra work around the house and help your parents out, this helps them have more time to think. I really hope things work out with you and your family. I hope your still able to have a good week, and if you ever need to vent again I'm here to listen and pray for you if you need it. ❤‍🩹

It got to the point where there was no way around it. And to anyone who is facing this, your real friends aren’t gonna treat you different just because of your parents choices. They are going to support and comfort you in any way they can.

A few months a go my parents told me and my brothers that they were getting a divorce and i just listened to this song and cried a lot, but thanks god they resolved their problems and now are happier together than ever. If your going through this process with you family, STAY STRONG and if you have little brothers/sisters be strong for them and give them as much love as you can, cause they are the ones who take the worst part.

Yonttely Dominguez my parents got divorced when I was 1, then when I was 4 my mom got married to an amazing person, then when I was 6 they had my little sister. Then we moved to Texas right after I turned 7. Soon before I turned 8 my mom and stepdad got divorced. My sister was almost two. They are still good friends. Me and my sister see him every weekend. My life is pretty flipping messed up. I’ve been in love but they didn’t like me back. His girlfriend got mad because he was hanging out with me and she told him. She broke up with him for another guy that’s just dating her to make my crush feel bad. He barely talks to me anymore because she said I influenced their breakup. Sometimes I just wanna curl up in a ball. Sometimes I just wanna sit in the top bunk of my bed, and cry. I don’t have many friends. Ily my friends.

"Some things you can't tell your sister 'cause she's still too young" I was that little sister. I was 5 when my parents split. We moved to a different state and for that next 5 months or so, I would break into tears every single time my dad was brought up in a conversation. It was so difficult. I have no memory, whatsoever, of what happened. The only thing I remember is my mom just saying, "Daddy's not coming home with us" it was so, so, so, painful. Now I'm 12, and I see my dad twice a year. Christmas, and summer. Luckily, for my brother, his birthday is during summer so he gets to see our dad near his birthday. The last time I was with my dad on my birthday was, I think, 3rd grade. It's just so, so, so, damn painful.

Our marriage ended when our twins were 3. They were so young they don't remember any of the bad times. Despite how we felt about each other and how hard it was to go through those times, we did our best to keep things as even and balanced for the kids. The kids are now nearly 17 and have a good relationship with their dad and me and get on well with his new wife and step sisters. It took a long time to get here but we are all on good terms. All is not lost and no regrets. Perhaps there would have been a lot, if we stayed together.

Here I am , a 13 year old girl sitting in the bathroom with mascara blotched on my eyes and tears running down my face. A 13 year old girl remembering 7 year old me when six years ago my parents split. When a 7 year old girl felt like the weight of the world was on her shoulders. The 7 year old girl listening to this song everyday to try deal with it. And now 13 year old me , listening to this song again and it all flooding back. But that’s just life

Thanks for this song. I grew up in a broken home, my parents divorced right after my 1st birthday. I know some people that grew up with whole families only to have their parents split up when they were older. That sounds really hard to go through and in a way, I'm glad that I never had to deal with that kind of loss. Still, growing up without ever knowing what a whole family felt like was tough. I switched homes every single week for my entire life (to keep things fair for my parents, of course), so the "2 homes are better than one" line really hit home, because I never had one home. Every week, I was driven across town for the handoff, more than often they'd fight. I grew up with a weekly reminder of how much my parents hated each other. And no matter how much I wanted to ignore it, it hurt. When I was 15, my parents got into another intense custody battle and this time, I was brought into the conversation (great). I had to talk to lawyers on both sides, while being told by each of my parents to bad mouth the other. They hired psychologists to meet with me 2-3 times a week at the court's recommendation because they assumed that there could be something wrong with me while going through all of that. There was a lot wrong with me. Maybe not in a dangerous way, but in a really sad and hurtful way. I was really socially awkward, never had the chance to develop normal social skills, no one ever wanted to hang out with me and I didn't blame them. I remember eating my lunches in a dark hallway alone for most of high school. Even if the other kids found me mildly interesting, I didn't have time to be around anyone else since I was completely occupied with meetings with lawyers and psychologists. I never felt like I had a home. I'm still young (24 now) but I've healed a lot since then. Still, a part of me will always wish that I had some kind of normal childhood. There's a light at the end of my story. I was able to take that sadness and committed myself to a dream of making sure that my future kids NEVER have to go through anything like that. They're going to grow up in a loving home without a care in the world. That's what I tell myself when I'm reminded of the past. I've let that pain really fuel me to make the most of my life. Fast forward to the present day, I started my own small business that was funded on Kickstarter (didn't make a lot of money, don't worry, I'm not rich, haha), landed my dream job working for Google, and now I'm pouring myself into a new web comic (I used to draw a lot of silly comics on pieces of paper to cheer myself up when I didn't have anyone else to talk to as a kid, so this is very much a childhood dream come true). I just ended my 2nd long-term relationship, and it's hard to imagine building that family when I haven't met the right match yet, but I know things will fall into place when they're meant to, I just have to be ready. I don't know if anyone will read this, but it feels good to get my story out there. This song really opened that up for me, so thank you. Who knows, maybe someone's going through what I did, or maybe something even worse. I wished someone out there would have told me that things would turn around as long as I had a positive outlook on life, even when it seemed impossible to at the moment. Maybe this will reach one person like me, maybe it'll help in some way. The pain doesn't go away, but "it gets better", is what I'd say to my old self hiding from my parents in the pantry closet.

I can’t fix it, I can’t change it…and not a day goes by where I don’t wish I can help him see he is loved…he has a home…that is all I thrive to instill in him. Sending healing thoughts and lots of love your way ❤️

trust me I know what you mean, I was in the car when I first heard it and it's so relateable I cried. My parents split up 6 months ago and it still hurts. I went from a full house to practically living on my own now in another house because mum's never home. It will get easier, I promise and sometimes you will hurt but you will find a way through it. I try to pull out the positives in it now, I'm stronger than I was and I am more independent. If you want to talk just drop a message below because I can relate, I am sorry and I wish there was something I could do.

Going through divorce itself is hard and there's not many things that make the situation better. But this song is able to relate to those kids and families on a personal level beautifully. My dad left when I was two and it was just me and my mom till I turned eight and she got married to my stepdad that's abusive and I don't know why my mom stays with him it's just all a mess and I still don't manage to cry and it feels like I should be, AM I A ROBOT LOL, but this is serious I don't see how I can make a joke out of something and maybe I do cry because I'm just used to all this I don't know

Talk about hitting home right now...not an emotional person but this hits you right in the heart. All I can think about is my 2 daughters (10,15) and how they are going to handle the talk we need to give them when it is time.
