Chad Stahelski being a stunt coordinator turned director couldn't have been a more perfect fit for this series. The training Keanu put in to be able to utilize so much more screen-time really adds to the immersion into the story. No need to use any tricks to hide the actors face if they are actually able to perform the stunts, which is why Tom Cruise is so highly regarded as well.

Yeah, he was the perfect director for this series. Chad was also Keanu’s stunt double in The Matrix.

6:18 No, it's so much more heartbreaking than that: they didn't put the dog next to John... The blood trail implies that Daisy dragged herself over to the unconscious John to snuggle up to him and die from internal bleeding. 😭

It’s pretty cool to see basically a one off movie grow such a fanbase post theatrical release that a whole series was created. It’s one of those movies that became one of those “cult classic” movies that did ok in the theatre but exploded post release on PPV and streaming

Nah bruh...they didn't put the dog near him...the puppy crawled over to him before she died :( Dude..that part guts me every single time. I remember feeling/thinking this, and I remember hearing so many others who watch this for the first time state at that moment, "Oh my god, I didn't realize this was going to be SO EMOTIONAL!!!" lol

The big mistake is that that first group of dudes that came to John Wick's house didn't just turn around and run after realizing that he left the door unlocked for them.

I remember when John Wick came out. Movies were mostly doing the Jason Bourne style fast cutting, close up, shaky cam action. And Keanu was sort of the ''whoa guy'' or the ''sad guy sitting on bench guy''. It almost went straight to DVD, because his career wasn't the same that it was before. And yet it came out in the cinema, I saw it, and it changed everything. Keanu's career renaissance started, and it was so refreshing to see an action movie with a dedicated star, steady and focused action scenes, and all the style. It hit in a really good way. And everyone started doing better action after it. Honestly, the first one is my favorite. The others are good, but this one is like the movie I rewatch the most.

Stylistically, the closest film before this that had similar action cinematography would probably be The Raid: Redemption, or possibly Ip Man (I think they're pretty close in age); I've also seen clips from House of Flying Daggers (I think) that make me immediately think of some of the action cinematography from this series. The Raid owes a lot to trends across its region though, I'm told particularly from Hong Kong police dramas and action films (another influence sometimes cited is 2003's Oldboy, though I'm sure there are many others). I'm not sure how far back the trend in Hong Kong and nearby martial arts films was for showing the action clearly, but I have a feeling it's going to go all the way back (how can you show off techniques and differences in martial arts disciplines without clearly showing what everyone's doing and how?) so it might be easier to just handwave at the entire region and genre.
@transformersrevenge9
@transformersrevenge9 Ай бұрын
@@dartigens10 Well yeah, hong kong action cinema never lost it's touch, and Raid was around, but the mainstream Hollywood really went for the Bourne shaky cam, because it helped to hide the lack of professionalism. John Wick brought back the steady cam, highly coreographed action, that we have seen a lot of these days.

It’s interesting that you read the dead dog being next to John as the villains moved it there, I always read it as it crawled over to him while it was in the last moments of its life. Not sure which is “right”, but I love that it can be seen both ways! Great, insightful, and fun reaction as always!!!

I really enjoy the Francis scene for the subtext about the weight. They're not talking about Francis' weight; John is asking how many guards are in the club. Francis says in Russian that he lost 27kgs, which converts to 60 lbs., but there are 27 guards in the club. I've heard from some people that speak Russian that Francis actually says 20kgs, but it was supposed to be 27. They must've just told Kevin Nash the wrong word/pronunciation.

The use of lighting is fantastic in this movie. Especially in the club scene. Blue is John's color. When he is in Blue he has no issues. He is killing completely unnoticed. Then when Red becomes the primary color he gets spotted and has to fight. There is a video on KZbin by channel Movie LUTS titled "Why is John Wick shot in 3 colors?" It goes into much more detail. I recommend checking it out.

This movie really came out of nowhere. I remember having a couple of hours to kill one day so I headed to the cinema. None of the movies appealed to me, then I saw the poster for John Wick. It was just Keanu Reeves with a gun in hand. Nothing else. I thought "that'll do, at least it'll have a bit of action". Little did I know I was just about to watch the greatest action movie of all time. Such a great memory.

I learned something interesting about Heat a couple of days ago. The sound engineers wanted to overlay the gunfight with better firing sounds and Michael Mann argued with them to leave the actual sounds of the blank rounds as he felt it sounded more realistic.

Daniel Bernhardt is the head of security actor, he's an awesome MA actor and stuntman. He starred in the Bloodsport sequels, Mortal Kombat Conquest the tv series and played the Agent who fights Morpheus and Trinity in the highway scene in Matrix 2. He is about to star in the Beastmaster reboot. He rules.

@JamesVSCinema at 6.20 - I always wondered how the puppy got there. Most people think the bad guys put the puppy next to him, but - why the long trail of blood? Wouldn't they just have picked it up and dropped it next to Wick? My guess is - but also what the fewest people think - the puppy crawled up to its owner before its last breath. I just wonder, how to figure out which one it is supposed to be?

I can definitely get it if you're not going to watch the entire series since it's long - 2 definitely has a very different look and feel to 1, and it was kind of unexpected since this seems like a pretty self-contained film and story. And you can absolutely see the budgets getting bigger as the franchise goes on. But, if you get a chance to watch 4, check out the Vanity Fair interview with Chad Stahelski where he talks about how they scripted some of the action. I'm sure their process changed quite a lot across the series though. 14:31 - to answer that, amazingly, there's virtually no crossover in credited crew that I can find from the IMDb lists, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of them know each other or have worked together on projects that I didn't find that easily. However, the odds are very, very good that the creators of John Wick might have drawn on the same inspirations, since their general influences were revenge films, westerns, neo-noir and action films (and you can see a heavy, heavy influence from martial arts films too but it's a moot point since they also influenced other American action films and vice versa, which you've probably already noticed a lot). The Wikipedia article for the film lists a lot of the films the creators drew on for inspiration, particularly for visual design - I'd be pretty surprised if you can find any action films of the last 10-20 years that haven't drawn on some or all of that list, and I wouldn't be surprised if there's plenty of overlap with probable influences on Netflix's Daredevil too.

One thing that always interests me in movies like these - are there any native Russian speakers here that can tell me how good the Russian is they are speaking in the movie? How thick are the accents? As a German native speaker it really pulls me out of a movie or TV series when they present a character who should speak German natively and it just sounds horrible. Makes me appreciate the moments they actually bother to either properly train the actors to pronounce their lines correctly or even casting native speaking actors for a role even more. Like in Better Call Saul S4 with the Germans - they are German actors and you can hear it and it's great. Always wonder how it is with other languages.
