This is soooooooooooooo incredibly HELPFUL! I have this stencil too and only once used it but blegh on how it turned out. Definitely going to try some of your face stencils and stamps techniques. Great 3 part series! Would love to see more with modifying existing face stamps and stencils. Nice work man! :)

I know I'm just finding this video a year later, but I just wanted to let know that I ADORE that Alice cover! Thanks for showing us some different techniques. I am getting a Butterfly Effect book for my birthday and I was terrified to go with a blank canvas, but I'm not so terrified of the blank canvas anymore! Thank you!

Starting with Frida; excellent demo of the one stroke method on the flowers. You're right the mind fills in a lot of the detail that isn't actually there (hence why eye witness accounts are suspect). For the mermaid cover, that's not the first time I'm seen the stencil bump for shadowing, but I am surprised at how well it worked for the scales; I wouldn't have thought to use that technique with that stencil pattern. Now I'll need to go play with that idea, thanks. The Alice page, I really liked at the end your use of the blue paint marker to fill in the detail work on the vertical stripes, before that they were a bit flat and I was underwhelmed at that point, but it was a fine example of when you've said maybe we're not happy with our work because we stop at step 8 and the piece really would have been great if we'd gotten to step 10 or 11. As always, TFS

If you want to go ALL out with pencils, hands down the BEST pencils on the planet are the Faber Castell Polychromos. They can be very pricey but they are HEAVEN, and I found mine on a MAJOR discount at a local art store. :D

James, What kind of colored pencils do you use? I have oil based pencils than I can use Gamsol blending solution with. Not sure those would work well with water color paint.
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative7 жыл бұрын
I used Jane Davenport pencils in this, but typically I use Faber Castell Polychromos which are oil based. They will work, you might just not be able to melt them into the covers with the watercolour, or perhaps they will provide a resist?
@emm26367 жыл бұрын
James, I just got some new pencils and tested them out today. The Jane Davenport pencils do not blend with water, but are nice, and my oil based pencils do not either (just as I suspected). I also just received in the mail today Derwent Inktense pencils that are advertised as water color pencils, however it doesn't say that on the front of the package, but on the back it says "Apply rich, deep colour then wash out to create a pure and translucent ink-like effect" They must be used on water color paper though. Not much happened on card stock. Wow, the Derwent pencils are amazing! I got the package of 36 on Amazon at 60% off for $38. They sell at my local craft store for S119.99 You are so talented I would love to see what you do with them. I bought the paints with that face stencil. You make it look so easy. I'm going to practice a lot. Thank you for inspiring me. Cheers!

Could you use any watercolours?
@JamesLukeBurkeCreative7 жыл бұрын
I think you could, but you'd want them to be pretty pigmented. Also, they're more of a base when I use them so using more expensive watercolours might be a bit of a waste, but its totally dependent on what you're going for :)
