As I get older, I realize all trends are things I've worn at some time before. The logical conclusion is, stop caring about trends and wear what you like. But I think just knowing what the trends are can help you as a stylish person.

Watches with small case diameters were the norm up until the 90's. Then in the 2000's, watches with large case diameters blew up in popularity. Within the last few years small watches have been making a comeback, but at the end of the day, watches are like shoes. Buy the one that fits your wrist the best.

Suede definitely is more high maintenance. That waterproof spray doesn't work if you end up caught in rain heavier than a sprinkle without an umbrella. Also once stained, it's a real pita to restore color and texture to what you want. Also if you manage to get an oil stain like from food you're eating. Basically going to be impossible to get out.

This is exactly what I’m worried about! Especially with an expensive suede jacket like from RRL.

as a watch fan, can confirm the small face watches are absolutely trending, as they have been for a few years. think of a cartier tank style... and other bracelet-like watch shapes
@JamesLeungАй бұрын

@ManoloVintageАй бұрын
I like the small watch trend. Today, mens watches that are "appropriately sized" for a mans wrist tend to be between 36-40mm. The trend has been turning towards smaller size watches for men as they wore in the 50s or earlier. These watch sizes from way back are from 31-35mm and can be even smaller with a Cartier tank style watch. Men like Ryan Gosling and Tylor The Creator have been sporting these smaller size watches with stylish attire, and it looks good. Muhammad Ali has some photos sporting a small watch, too. I don't think wearing a smaller watch on a metal bracelet matters at all in the trend.
@JamesLeungАй бұрын
Great overview thank you 👍 If I was to get a watch it would definitely be something on the smaller side, they look a lot more elegant.
@ManoloVintageАй бұрын

Watches: There was a time when big watches were all the rage. Big = masculine. 42mm and up. But classic sizing sub 40mm is making a come back. And I think some trendy men are now pushing the limit and trying out ladies sizes 35mm and below. That said a 34mm dress watch was standard during the 1950s. I spotted Daniel Simmons wearing a small ladies Cartier so it’s really going to blow up.
@renonagasanАй бұрын
I first saw crew neck cardigans on guys through korean celebrities some years ago before it became a “fall trend” in Western countries. Back then they were just male celebrities who were styled to wear typical women’s crew neck cardigans or Chanel crew neck tweed jackets in photo-ops and 90% of them wear them unbuttoned and they look just fine. If I’m not mistaken, I think I also saw Jacob Elordi wear one recently unbuttoned.

Dainty watches have def been on the come up but I feel like it’s better suited for guys with a thinner frame. You can reference Timothee Chalamet and his Panthere watch, so moreso watches as a jewelry piece rather than a timepiece. I’m currently rocking a Cartier Baignoire Bangle and it has been super easy to style cause it mostly looks like just a gold bracelet.

When talking about small watches, GQ just highlighted the simple fact that most companies return to make watches in more classic sizes (mostly between 36-40 mm). This is a "correction" from the super bulky and big watches we've seen few years ago.

You did a good job interpreting the small face watch trend, wtf is a time bracelet 😂 but yeah I think Cartier is having a moment, and their design language leans towards smaller faces. An average watch face is a 40mm diameter circle. The classic Cartier watch face is 35mm square. The JLC reverso has also been copied a lot lately, that’s a 23mm wide x 38mm tall rectangle. I think this trend plays well with other trends right now, like gender neutral styling (smaller watches were typically considered effeminate) and slim/baggy contrast.
@JamesLeungАй бұрын
Haha thanks for helping me clear it up! I love the smaller Cartier watches and agree it fits in well with other trends. Might have to start looking into getting one!

Hi James! Fantastic summary of the GQ article. Personally I think the Crewneck cardigans look a bit femme. Not a bad thing, just not for everyone. Also, a few years ago J. Crew reissued the classic rollneck in thick cable knit cotton. These have the classic "Oarsman label", green tag with a red oarsman. You may have a little more luck finding one of these second hand than an original from the eighties. Love your content, cheers!
@JamesLeungАй бұрын
Yes I see what you mean about the cardigans. Oh that’s great info - I’ll be on the lookout for that tag now, thank you!
@Highland_PaddyАй бұрын
I think sweaters with zippers already existed, anyway. True barn coats are a bit longer than chore coats but neigh necessarily as long as the animal chaser ones with the larger flap pockets. Often the hand warmer pockets will be farther up on the chest instead of flap chest pockets like a shirt-jack. Harrington are typically lightweight windbreakers as well, but definitely a different look than a chore or more rugged denim jacket [which is less warm or windproof and technically a chore coat, anyway].
@Highland_PaddyАй бұрын
The wind can go through the suede jacket a bit. I'd rather have a better option unless you're going almost totally for looks here.
@Highland_PaddyАй бұрын
Argyle is a design pattern, neigh a garment, tho. The argument here, then, is that it looks better on certain more traditional garments still, etc.

Luckily I already have most of those items for a very long time. Definitely will avoid the flashy belt trend though 😂 Concerning small watches: People have been wearing watches that are too big for their wrist for quite some time, so the smaller watches trend makes sense to me. Also, people are tending towards smaller rectangular watches like Cartier which probably is influence by the whole Old Money aesthetic a lot.
@JamesLeungАй бұрын
I have heard a lot of people say the same thing about watches, very interesting!
@pistolen87Ай бұрын
Regarding small watch. I think the point is seeing your watch as a piece of jewelry, rather than the technical functions and movement of the watch. A lot of expensive watches are very large and bulky to wear under your shirt or jacket, small watches don't have the same problem and can function more like a bracelet. Also, more focus will be on the watch band with a smaller watch. Personally, I like watches, but I don't really care about how it functions, I care about how it looks and a simple quartz movement is fine by me.
@JamesLeungАй бұрын

I think the title for the watch section is a joke since there nonessential as most ppl use their phone for the time (not me though, I love watches). So it’s like “your bracelet tells time, how cool is that” type stuff. But the trend coming back is vintage looking watches on metal bracelets (sometimes even an integrated bracelet so it appears as one solid piece) with a smaller case size which is considered anywhere between 34-37mm. A lot of watch brands are reaching into the past and reissuing or reimagining their old designs/models.
