Steam engines cannot be ruled out either..water, a fuel source like wood, coal, etc, and lubrication is all they need. I do agree with you though...many of the oldest combustion engines could run on almost any petroleum product

I'm always amazed at how slow these gas engines run when today's engines need to idle at ten times the working rpm of these big ones.
