I think those Japanese ones in the beginning that you didn't like because they tasted phenolic were actually coffee *tea* candies (based on the packaging) 珈琲茶飴 - literally "coffee tea candy". Likely, coffee mixed with hōjicha. Personally, I really like the bitter leafy quality of those but I can completely understand why they wouldn't pass the test.

The pocket coffee reaction was hilarious! but seriously, the biting was a mistake. I have several times did the old trick of carefully biting one side off just to drink the coffee and then eat the chocolate and doing that you realize that the coffee is way more bitter than it should be and the chocolate is extremely sweet. It is meant to be eaten as a single bite to let both complement each other. try it, even off camera, the experience is way better that way.

I just don't know why you would try to make a coffee candy accessible to non coffee drinkers, it doesn't make any sense to me. If you don't like coffee then don't eat it, and let the people who _do_ like coffee have an actually coffee-forward candy.

@@Blutzen Simply put, money. I take your point, and there are plenty of different products out there that target all different types of people. If you want something that only a coffee lover would appreciate, I'm sure you can find it. But looking at it purely from a business standpoint, broadening your product's appeal and thus its customer base nets you more profit. Again, this isn't exactly a high-end product; we're just talking about candy, and nobody loves candy more than kids, so it makes sense to include them in who you're catering to.

As a German, the Werther's Original Coffee labeled as American confused me a bit at first. Werther's Original is a German brand of caramel candies, named after the town of Werther, but the coffee version doesn't actually exist here in Germany as far as I can tell. Also Scho-Ka-Kola is an absolute classic, my stepdad would always have a tin on hand for long car drives. The dark chocolate one is indeed the better by far, you barely see the milk chocolate ones, and I'm pleased it got reasonably far. We also have little coffee beans made out of dark chocolate with some slight coffee flavour here, they're not that special in terms of flavour to be fair, but at least fun because of the shape. Also very popular as cake decoration.
@Annika95174 ай бұрын
Yeah but the Werthers are still all produced in Germany. According to Storcks website they don't have a production outside of Germany. So it is definitely German candy. Loacker for example has a factory in South Tyrol/Italy and one in East Tyrol/Austria. And they produce Matcha flavour and Cheese flavour too. They don't exist in the European market (at their own shops nowadays you can buy it) since they are produced for overseas. It doesn't change the origin of the company and product though.

@beritbunnyАй бұрын
Werther's (Original) are so ubiquitous here in the US, and were a BIG force in TV ads during my childhood ~20+ years ago that I thought by now that they would *actually be* American. It was almost impossible to watch network TV and not see a Werther's advert! I was aware as a small child (name? trade dress of the bag? reading the bag?) that they were actually of German manufacture, but I guess my brain assumed that they would have been resold (American branch only) and now made here, or in China for us to eat. I'm curious: that oval one-sided donut shape with a divot is a completely distinctive shape for Werther's; no other candy has a similar shape at all, so I knew this was by them, even though I've never seen a marbled product by them, or knew that they made anything beyond Original. Is it a common shape in the domestic German market?
@Annika9517Ай бұрын
@@beritbunny there is definitely some fruit/cream candy that has the same shape. But i don't really eat this kind of candy. So I am not sure if only the ones produced by Storck (they are called Campino, they have marbeled and uni coloured versions) have that shape or others too.

Hello from Ukraine👋 I used to make caramel candies like this at home and sell them at school. I had some success before Russia invaded the country in 2014 and all the prices tripled instantly. My teacher at a private language school owned a bar/restaurant, and when she tried my candies, she was ready to buy in bulk regularly. However, the only condition was that I had to make them in the shape of a coffee bean. I searched all over the internet but couldn’t find any silicone molds matching the needed size and shape, so I never sold them a batch. I am pretty sure they would have recommended me to other cafes, and I could have had a pretty nice business as a 12-year-old kid, lol. Later, I switched to reselling stuff from AliExpress and eventually pursued a career as a software engineer. In the end, I don’t regret much. Learning English and Math ended up being more beneficial for me. Fun random fact: right after the invasion, Petro Poroshenko (the founder of the brand of the candy-winner) had become our president until 2019

Well - the original contained cocain (thats where the Name comes from: Schokolade, Kokain and Kaffee) and was given to fighter pilots…
@AvaByNight3 ай бұрын
@@linus6420 It did not. What did have cocaine was "fliegermarzipan" which was, you guessed it, marcipan and cocaine. there was also panzerschokolade (choco and cocaine for the tank crews). But Schokakola (also known as fliegerschokolade) was from the beginning and still is schoco, coffee and cola nut (yes, the same nut that gave coca cola half it's name. and yes, it is still in it to this day). Hence the name: SCHO(kolade)-KA(ffee)-KOLA(nuss). Originally it was ment as an "sportlerschokolade" for olympia 1936 and then after the olympia was done was sold to the population and became (and stayed for a long time after ww2 in west germany even) part of the german military rations for the airmen in ww2 and regular soldiers after the war. stop spreading this myth. fliegerschokolade and fliegermarzipan and panzerschokolade were three completly different things and the first (which is now known as schokakola) never had cocaine in it (as the only one of the three)

My grandmother also always had Nips, of various flavors, in her candy dishes too but I'm remembering a very different wrapper as well. Looking at pictures online I think hers were the Ferrara Nips -- the wrapper still looks different, but the writing style matches what I remember. It looks like maybe they were discontinued for a while and just started showing up in stores last year? Also, it looks like Ferrara might also own Brach's? @@druidOcelot I've been to Ukraine and get sent candy from there - so I've tried out a variety of Roshen candy (as well as others, like the Lukas and a local Kharkiv made candy I have right now in a bowl). What we get in Europe/US is a small, chosen amount of specific candy of what I believe fits our taste a bit better. Because the others that you get in Ukraine (even Roshen) has a bit of weird taste to them that I believe eastern Europeans are a bit more used to. Not saying they're bad at all - just like Hoffman in the video could make out Nestle - it has a special taste. One of the big selling here in Sweden from Roshen is Milk Drops. You find them in quite a few supermarkets. My personal favourite are "Romashka" (chamomille) though :)

I wonder if you would have enjoyed 'Coffee Chocolate' by Pocket Latte which (at one point) claimed to have 100mg natural caffeine. They have several other varieties. Moonstruck 'Dark Chocolate Espresso' bar and Taza 'Coffee Chocolate' disc (with stone ground chocolate) are good, though different. Perhaps my favorite is 'United Coffee Candy', which seems balanced. I would have thought 'Kasugai Sumiyaki Roasted Coffee Hard Candy' (made from charcoal-roasted coffee bean extract. Very bold.) would have been included, but I don't think it would have fared well. Or 'Bali's Best Espresso Candy'. Some others I haven't tried -- Tayas Milkquick (Turkish) Coffee Candy, Les Anis de Flavigny, Mocati Coffee Candy. Maybe Chocolat Café-Tasse's 'Assorted Santos', 'Dark chocolate family bar with Coffee from Kenya' or 'Milk chocolate family bar with Ethiopia Sidamo Coffee' or 'White chocolate family bar with coffee' might have been worth trying...
