James Kalm slips into Canada Gallery for a stroll through “Hocket”, the most recent show by Matt Connors. Employing flat planes of thin luminous color, Connors composes simple punchy compositions that reference “Color Field”, “Support Surface” and other branches of color based abstraction. Soaking his acrylic paints into raw canvas, the artist layers scrims of pigment that fluctuate between controlled geometric formalism and slipperier gestural areas that resonate with subtle contrasts and tinted harmonies. A nonchalant casualness deflects from these work’s well conceived and structured compositions. This program was recorded October 23, 2017
