I owned Mario's Time Machine on the SNES... and I actually thoroughly enjoyed it as a kid. Didn't know there was a NES version, but it looks worse. The surfing parts aren't as hard as he makes it out to be. Because score mattered at the end, the best strategy was to go once, learn all you need to know from talking to people, solve the "quiz" and then leave, and then re-enter, solve the quiz and then quickly go to the person you need to see to give back the item to complete the level. I managed to beat it as a kid, and I spent many hours playing it and had fun. Though, as an adult now, I probably would have no interest in playing through it again. So, I guess it worked for its target audience?

4:00 is actually wrong, everyone makes this mistake. The creator of Donkey Kong, Miyamoto, actually came up with the concept of his own accord, and then named it as such because his limited knowledge of English lead him to believe that "Donkey Kong" would be slang in English for "Stupid Ape". If anything, the only thing he took was the word Kong, but every other similarity was pure coincidence. Plus Kong was always a term that meant ape anyway, King Kong didn't make that up. Granted, this is all what he claims, so he might be bull-shitting, but still. Ironic this is too, since Nintendo were actually sued by Universal Studios who claimed they ripped off their character. Nintendo luckily won, after their lawyer showed that King Kong was public domain.

The fact that Luigi didn't get his own proper platformer back-in-the-day, is one reason why I love rom hacks. Finally, I can play as Luigi in a proper game. Even something simple as Super Luigi Bros, replacing Mario with Luigi. I always liked Luigi better than Mario. Mario always seemed kind of stuck up to me. I dunno if he ever was, but for some reason that's always been my image of him in my head. "I'M the one saving the princess. I'M the one beating Bowser. I'M the one with the adventure. It's MARIO World, It's Dr.MARIO. it's MARIO Bros. Me Me Me." Even in Yoshi's Island, it was Mario that rode with Yoshi to save Luigi. Hell, even in the Mario Bros. movie, their last name is MARIO. On a different note, I still think "Mario's Time Machine" is a cool concept. Turtles in Time style. Someone should make a rom hack of Mario Bros or Mario 3, and make it time travel based. Future world with skyscrapers and stuff in the background, old west world, whatever else.
