Yea, he's talking about the neck fatal no doubt. I never had as big an issue with it as others did. I always took it as a joke/troll. Alot of fighting games have stuff like it. Sometimes even to the extent of including a whole character as a troll, like Dan in SF, Pichu in Melee, or Bo Rai Cho in MK. Smash has various stages and items that are basically trolls as well.

I feel like it's the 5th video james talks about the mk hype of the mid 90s when the arcade came out. The way he speaks with passion and nostalgia always give me chills. I loved this episode. Liu Lang's fatality is basically a butterfly kick followed by an Uppercut, given some extra oomph thanks to momentum from said kick. It's meant to be non lethal given Kang's initial Shaolin trained restraint from killing, but it can be satisfying to use this move to smash someone into the pit. Makes it at least unique, despite having no shock factor.

Believe it or not, I heard that MK was actually inspired by Big Trouble in Little China; specifically Lighting and David Lo Pan, as Raiden and Tsung respectively. Pretty cool.

I think the fatalities could have been inspired by Riki-Oh, which was also a late 80's thing. He has a catchphrase which is pretty much "FINISH HIM" and then he just kills his opponent right after ("I'll send your evil karma to hell, pass on to the next life"). And hell, it even had a couple of x-ray deaths which was another thing that got featured in MK later on. Also, the film adaptation came out a year before MK, and was also notorious for its brutality. Although, it was a rip-off of Hokuto No Ken, and so that series could be thought to have inspired that aspect as well *shrug*

On the Genesis version, the endurance rounds aren't too bad, but Goro is no joke, not even on Very Easy. It's demoralizing to waste continues against him, especially when you're so close to Shang Tsung. I can never past Goro. And yes, I play this game on the Firecore Genesis.

I remember renting MK for the SNES. I kept it for one day and took it back to the rental store. Then I rented Samurai Showdown instead and absolutely fell in love. So begins my love of Samurai flicks and SNK games lol.

Dude, I was obsessed with the series as a kid and your description of spending class time trying to memorize fatalities is spot on! I had it on Genesis and totally remember those two codes, ABACABB and DULLARD. It's funny, I still remember codes from Vectorman, too. I guess the acronym mnemonic device thing works better than anyone might think. Thanks for still making these videos! The nostalgia in them still hits hard.

Did you have the 6 buttons joystick? I had the mk ii on genesis but when plugging the 6 button only worked the regular 3 A B C

@@berna031 no, but I had the 6 button controller, which was amazing. Trying to play MK games on the regular 3 button controller was next to impossible. You had to press two buttons at once for certain moves.

It’s more of a “pick your poison” thing for MK1. The SNES was the most accurate visual and audio representation, but the extremely stiff controls and of course censorship made it suffer. The genesis version was inferior to the SNES version in terms of graphics and sound, but had more fluid control and kept all the gore (with a code of course). Both were good in their own way. I didn’t play the other versions.

D core The music I think was good, but I would have preferred to have more of the sound effects that the SNES had. But that said, I still preferred the genesis version myself. I also disagree with AVGN on the control. It plays just fine with the traditional 3 button controller.

I think the Mega Drive was crispier in the graphics department (the SNES looked quite blurry), but the missing animation is what makes the SNES version have better visuals for me.

@BallOfBlood However the graphics chip it didn't utilize masterfully at all. The tracks being completely flat despite games like V-Rally 3 showed detailed polygonal 3D tracks more than a year earlier. Even its Japan exclusive successor F-Zero Climax still looked like a SNES game.

@@cube2fox I didn't think my original post was that confusing. There's a large chiptune and electronic music scene that uses DMG as the basis. I haven't compared it side by side to the NES chip but I do know that generally Gameboy had great music.
