James - as much as I've really enjoyed your videos, for some reason, this one felt like you delivered an even more personal statement as we all get to (virtually) join you on your trip. I really loved that the food was a companion versus the just the main course, and it made the concluding (and mouthwatering) meal even more memorable for me. Your productions values, in my opinion, outpace even the most well-funded/staffed KZbin channels I visit, and I always feel like the infusion of your personality combined with the magnificent camera work (it truly is) makes this simply one of my favorite channels. Thanks for all you do. BTW I had a giggle at the Sound of Music reference; as a child, my parents took my brother and me to the play in San Francisco in 1972, with Sally Ann Howes as Maria and Werner Klemperer as Captain von Trapp. As kids, we knew Klemperer as Colonel Klink in Hogans Heroes, so it was very strange to see him in this role!

For many years I did a Christmas Holiday in Munich, Vienna, Innsbruck and Salzburg. Those cities at Christmas time are very special. Salzburg has one of the great hotels in Europe, and it’s not your hostel 🤣, wherein I always stayed, that used to be called the Österreichischer Hof (from 1866-2000) and is now the Hotel Sacher (as in Sacher Torte). Note: The “Salzburg River” is actually called The Salzach River. The big difference between potato salad in the USA and Germany/Austria is that they use vinegar rather than mayonnaise and is usually served warm. My favorite Salzburg restaurant is the Michelin-starred The Glass Garden.

This takes me back. Gosh I miss Österreich. And your wine selection was exact. You’re not gonna find comparable wines to the French or to the Italians because the climate is different. And it lends itself to different grape varieties. however they’re still good. Oh, and there’s something if you go back to Vienna. There are grape vines I believe that the Romans planted in the hills above Vienna that’s something for you to look up.

Apologies my many comments. Unfortunately, you must travel on a very small budget as Salzburg has some lovely hotels, especially in the Altstadt. The weather you experienced is typical of Salzburg province. It can change to extremes several times a day. Good that you made the best of it. Always there are cranes in the photo view!!! Sorry that you travel all the way to Salzburg and had to eat at McDonald and Starbucks with so many excellent restaurants and cafés available. You are good man to not take advantage of the organ concert smat Salzburg Cathedral. Very admirable! I enjoy that as a young person, you appreciate the beauty of the many old churches. James ! You're not the only one impressed by your superior eating abilities. We all are ! What a dessert ! I haven't seen anything like that in Sydney. Whenever I've been to a local Austrian restaurant in Sydney, I've been disappointed. Hardly any of them left. Wow, that river was clean, healthy, and rushing past like the Grand Rapids ! You did a great job showing us the wonders of Salzburg. The Franciscan church was my religious favorite. You can rip off the other R.C. sacerdotal orders, and I encourage you to do so, but the Franciscans are the best guys in the Catholic church. They still wear the brown robes and sandals in public, and live very frugally. Our local church in the suburb where I live is Franciscan. They are kind, no nonsense, and you can accept the hard word from these guys because they're not hypocrites. You don't hear them being accused of things that other priests are accused of. Fantastic video, James ! I could talk all day about it. The food, by the way, looked delicious, and the price was value for money. All the best !

Restaurant Amador would be the place to splurge, it‘s austria‘s only 3 michelin stared restaurant and the food and wine is absolutely fantastic but beware of cost, my only visit until now came out to be 675€ per person with the wine pairing but it was one of the most fascinating mixes of cuisines and techniques i have ever tasted, truely outstanding! If you're a movie buff, now you HAVE to watch 'Amadeus' (from 1984). It won so many "Best" awards, including Picture, Actor, Art Direction, Costumes, Make-up and Sound.

Used to live a short(ish) train ride away over the border so I've been to Salzburg fairly often. That said, my favourite culinary experience there was some watermelon on the banks of the Salzach on a baking hot day (which happened also to be my first visit). There used to be a McDonalds on Getreidegasse (the same street as the Mozarthaus) that had a wrought iron golden arches sign to be in keeping with the area and I wondered why you didn't mention that - turns out it's permanently closed and the others in Salzburg have no such obligation. Bit of a shame. The potato salad at Goldgasse (pronounced more like gass-uh than gass-ay by the way) is exactly what I expected you to get with your schnitzel in Vienna - I told you it's as good as potato salad gets!

Nice! I can imagine how pleasant it would be to relax along the river. Indeed, that potato salad was amazing and far better than the potato salads that I've had in the US.

Great video! I'll be in Salzburg in 2 days and will definitely use some of your tips. Thank you! On a different note, what is that background music that's playing when you're talking about the Mirabell palace? It's so beautiful.

Thank you! I hope that you have a great time in Salzburg! I think that music was titled something "English Garden." It should be listed in the description.

So you had a fat hotdog AKA sausage. Out there normally by5pm stores close. You found a McDonald. You know in China they do wedding package themes inside McDonald’s. Yes you hear all the songs from the Sound of Music. Visually it is such a gorgeous looking place year round. It is so clean.

Way back in 1973 I think it was I took a trip to Europe and hitchhiked from Hamburg to Munich to Salzburg, Innsbruck and Vienna . I was with an another guy I met who was alone . Sometimes we took a train and sometimes we hitched but I was t a foodie guy then like I became later in life and I swear besides eating wiener schnitzel and drinking beer I can’t remember what the hell I ate …😅
