Great I catch myself saying “let’s do it and let’s do it now” all the time! I can’t hit lower than 20 lofted hybrids far at all. So I carry the 5 wood you convinced me to buy from your other video. That thing is a MONSTER and my new favorite club.

I recently got rid of my 3 and 4 hybrids. I replaced them with a 5 wood and a 7 wood. The main reason is because I would get an errant shot from my hybrids when I really wasn't expecting it. After getting the 5 and 7 woods those errant shots just don't happen. I did get the Callaway Flash 5 and 7 wood. And I did have Callaway Steelhead hybrids. The extra distance from the 5 and 7 wood is welcomed as well. Where I play there isn't a lot of thick ruff. A hybrid is better than other clubs out of thick ruff.

I went to a 19 degree hybrid several years ago and was happy with the resluts. Have seen similar videos recently comparing the hybrid to the 5 wood and decided to put the 5 wood back in the bag. Pleased with the change. It feels easier to hit, especially when I need just a bit more distance. With the hybrid, when I try to jump on it a bit I tend to hook, not so with the 5 wood.

Hybrid is the happy medium for me between a driving iron and 5wood. Hits the right height window and and goes the right distance as well is much more consistent than the other two options. First year having one in the bag and I love it. Use it all over the course and confident everytime it comes out of the bag.

As always, great info and analysis. I actually have a 5 wood and a 3 hybrid in the bag and use them for different shots altogether. The 5 wood is for fairway shots and long par 3's. The 3 hybrid is for rough and shots that need to stay low with distance, like under tree branches and off the fairway from bad tee shots.

I’ve dumped the 3 wood for a five have a 3 and 4 hybrid and then into five iron etc. about ten yards difference between the 3 and 4 but a lower flight on the 3 which is useful into wind.

I’m just old enough to have played competitive golf before there were hybrids. I loved them at the time and have gone back to it from time to time ever since. That said, there is no question that from a standpoint of versatility and possibly even forgiveness, the hybrid is hard to beat! I’ve had at least one hybrid in my bag for years ....and at times more. Currently, I have one hybrid in my bag, a Titleist 818h2 in 19* which is sandwiched between my 3wd and my 4i T-MB. It would hard for me to give up the ability to muscle out a hybrid from deep rough or, for that matter, a bad lie for the sake of a 5wd. Great video James! Very informative. It’s nice to have my own prejudices confirmed from time to time! 😀😀

I play the Rogue 3 wood and hybrid and absolutely love them... Don't get to use them a ton but love them regardless... This was a very interesting video as I used to have a 5 wood in my bag but decided to work in another wedge for gapping and the 5 wood wasn't even getting used... That said I never put much thought into the difference between the 5 wood and 3 hybrid... My hybrid is so easy for me to hit I couldn't imagine using a 5 wood instead. I've considered going to hybrids for the 4 and 5 irons as well as I hit my hybrid so well... Great video James!

Hi James... Enjoyed this! Been at home messing around with my set up. The bottoms end I like with AP2 PW at 46, VOKEY 50,54 & 58. Top end has been a little messy...Driver still inconsistent! Have a 915 which I paid for, 917 I won, Mizuno ST180 and PXG 0811 LX. 3 Wood is awesome - CALLAWAY XR at 15 degree...Now here's the issue... I was thinking of a 5wood at 18 degree to gap the top end better but will now stay with utility after watching the review.. Issue is I have a 19 and 21 Titleist in the bag. Longest iron is 4 at 25 degree! Have taken 21 out so have driver, 3 wood and 19 degree rescue and then 4 ron

Great comparison. I think the only thing missing was comparing the descent angle. Tour pros use the 5 wood because the height and and descent allows them to access and hold areas of firm greens. Also, gapping has to come into play. sometimes the hybrid is just too low and doesn't spin enough and doesn't separate enough particularly if someone also uses a 4 hybrid. Would love to see you hit your longest iron and 3 wood first then fill in one of the two.

Great review James! Would have really enjoyed if you took those two out on the course and actually try them out of the rough. Anyways I agree that it‘s much easier to hit a Hybrid out of the rough. Glides much better. The thing is that the courses I play at the greens are in good shape, but really soft. Therefore it doesn’t really make a difference whether spin and descend angle is a little lower and flatter with the hybrid. I would think this is the case for most golf courses. The places the likes of Rory plays at, greens are just superfirm. That‘s why they play 5 woods to get that extra spin and higher apex. Also worth mentioning here is that pros that carry 5 woods often switch it in favor of a utility irons once they play links, softer greens or wind is a bigger factor. Most amateur golfers don‘t do that. Therefore I still believe to the very most golfers hybrids are by far the best fit. And while many argue that pros don‘t use hybrids I can only partially agree to that. If you look at the pros on Tours with lower club head speeds you will figure, that a lot of them are actually playing hybrids. Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson to mention two of them. Only maybe 3-4% of male golfers have faster swing speeds compared to them. anyways. Can‘t be too wrong using hybrids then...

Have to admit that I gave up on both 3 woods & 5 woods years ago as the longer shafts (42" - 43") just seemed too cumbersome for me. I am currently playing an Epic Flash 3H set at 17* loft and an Epic Flash 4H set at 20* loft (both are 41" long), before transitioning into my 4 iron at 22*. loft. The 3H is my 3-wood replacement for second shots into par 5's, and although I sacrifice some distance, I'm usually in the fairway. My 4H is my 3-iron replacement and is used for long par 3's (200'ish yards). Thanks for the informative videos - I enjoy them a lot!

I used to smoke my woods. Last two years I have the yips with the woods so went 3H, 4H, and 5H. Now I set the 3H to 17 degrees and average 230 to 240 (260 when pured) so it replaces a 5 wood but close enough to 3 wood distance. Gives me the opportunity to add an addition wedge in the bag as I have 5 - PW.

I use both, and also have a driving iron. Epic flash 5wood, sub 70 4 hybrid, sub 70 5 hybrid, sub 70 3 utility iron. Plus a 5 iron. Took out my 60 as I have a low bounce 56 that can be opened up for extra space at the top of my bag. I've found having more ball flight options from 200-240 had really helped lower my scores and gives me way more confidence on long par 3s and reachable in two par 5s.

Recently purchased a G410 5 wood (currently set at 16.5). Goes about the same as my Mizuno 19 degree hybrid. Even the good shots with the 5 wood....just don't seem to travel as far.....and it should. I also have another Mizuno hybrid set at 15 degrees. I get more distance with the lower hybrid than with the 5 wood. My plan is if the ball is rolling out at all....go with the hybrid. Winter time I'll probably drop the low hybrid and hit the 5 wood more when the ground softens up.

This is a question I've been asking myself lately. I play a 5-wood (~215 yd club), and I love it... but not out of the rough. My 4 iron is also not reliable from thick grass. So, if I mishit my tee shot on a long par 4 or par 5, I normally have to lay up w a 6 or 7 Iron. Not ideal. I may have to consider replacing the 4 iron (~205 yd club), with a Hybrid, but I don't think it'll replace the 5-wood. Love the content James and appreciate all the work I'm sure it takes to put out daily videos.

I carry both, 5W lofted at 17 degrees (so a 4W) and a 3H at 19 degree. A 4W or at least a wood lofted at 16.5-17.5 degrees is a great compromise - solid off the tee, consistently 225-230 yards and a nicely high launching, soft landing 220 yards off the fairway. My 3H is a little shorter: 220 yards off tee is my maximum ball flight is lower and more penetrating. I have dropped the 3W from the bag as a consequence

Hybrid for me. My problem is I struggle with fairway woods, it took me years to find a 3-Wood that I could use off the deck (an old Adams Speedline that was one of the first clubs with a Velocity channel, or Speed slot as TM now call them). But I have never found a 5-Wood that I could use with any consistency, (the combination of a long shaft & small head is a nightmare scenario for me). So I now game an 18deg & 22deg hybrid (0317 GEN2) with the face set slightly open that give me the distance and ball flight that I need on my home course.

I use the hybrid 19 degree a lot and the Wood 3. I can play in Ruff with the hynrid and length is quite equal for me. These are the best clubs for me.

I rather the long iron. It may be psychological but I tend to favour irons overs woods and hybrids. Subconsciously it's in my head to use the long irons and hit em well when i am having a really off round of golf.

I have the Callaway Epic collection the 3 and 5 wood I also just recently purchased the 5 hybrid I enjoy hitting the hybrid more than the wood for sure honestly I can’t get rid of my 3 wood but I can do without the 5 wood now. The club has an extra gear it just fly’s off the club. Nice review

I use a 3 wood, then 3 and 4 hybrids. I do have a 5 wood but prefer the 3 hybrid, choosing to give up a few yards on my second shots on par 5s and long par 4s which is what I tend to use them for as a poor shot with the 5 wood tends to be a high slice which is more destructive than a poor shot with the hybrid.

It;s a problem gap for me. Between 3-wood and 3-iron. Choices are 5-wood, 2-hybrid, 2-iron. Pro's and con's with each. Hybrid miss was a huge hook so I switched to the 2-iron and I'm using it less and less as time goes on....

James I used to hit a five wood but now use a TaylorMade M6 3/19 Rescue and find it a better option from the rough and even playing a low shot from a bad lie under a tree line.

Driver , 5 and also a 7, 62 years old and I just never could get use to the hybrid for some reason, probably because I didn’t give it enough time and practice with one, I think it’s basically whatever feels good to the individual !!!!

Ironically before I watched this I was debating whether to continue to use my 17 degree 5W. I have 21 degree hybrid. I was finding the hybrid was going the same distance, but with better accuracy. After watching this, I've decide to pull out the 5W. Who says you got to carry 14 clubs? Use what works and makes you confident in hitting the shot. Thanks.

I use 12 clubs. Looking for 1 more wedge, making it 13. I dont know what else i would put in to make 14.

I've always had a 5 wood in the bag - I have the Ping G20 which is awesome. I haven't carried 3 & 4 irons for several years and replaced them with hybrids. Now I have a great mix from tee / fairway and rough which has made me much more consistent. Thanks James

In a nutshell, fairway woods off the fairway & hybrids out of the rough. To my simple logic, it’s all in the names - I mean FAIRWAY woods is a self-explanatory name and weren’t hybrids originally called rescue clubs (i.e. to get out of trouble) ? I don’t worry to much about similar lofts if the respective clubs are used for these differing purposes.

I use a 5 wood...but the 5 wood I use is the big bertha v series. It is a very low profile and acts more like a beefy hybrid.

I'm so inconsistent with hybrids (all-world or all-hacker) that I don't carry them anymore. Instead, I carry an original Callaway Steelhead 7w that I bought for $10 at Play It Again Sports. The head is probably a little smaller than some of today's hybrids and it has 20* loft--so basically a 3-hybrid that's easier to hit. So I carry driver, 4w, 7w, single length 5i through GW, Cally MD 50*, 54*, 58*, and putter. Covers all the distances I should ever realistically attempt with my slower swing speed.

I had a 5 wood in the bag and hit it really well. I now have a 4 Hybrid, and hit it really well also. But I think the end result is that the Hybrid is easier to hit for me. I typically hit the 5 wood around 175 yds.......... I hit the 4 Hybrid 160-170yds. I will gladly give up the few yards for the easier swing. The 4 Hybrid is 1/2" shorter........... yeah I know..........big deal. But...........it works.

Just replaced my old 5 wood with a hybrid. I’m a little worried just started hitting the 5 wood well as an alternative to my driver, but I needed some more versatility out of the rough. Hopefully I can drive consistently with it

I just bought a used Ping K15 5 wood with regular shaft. I found that I can hit is about 220-230 max, but I can hit it as high as a dang pitching wedge, even off the turf. Still getting used to it, but I'm hitting a high draw, so I like that. I've been struggling with the driver lately, so tomorrow, I'm leaving it home. Hopefully I'll hit a few more fairways and have more fun. I never was able to hit a 3 wood, but I might have to find a good modern used one. LOL

Good video James I used to use a rescue but struggled out the rough so I now use a ping 400 crossover 3iron which I hit a lot better out of rough and fairway still struggle to hit it off a tee strangely enough

Interesting video. I have a 5-wood and a hybrid in my bag. But I'm an older player just trying to play bogey golf not par golf. I hit the 5-wood about 160m (175yds) and my 19-degree hybrid about 150m (164 yds). So I wonder what relevance your measurements have to me. In general, I wish golf youtubers like you made more videos designed to help short-hitting 18-handicap golfers rather than long-hitting single digit handicap golfers. Thank you.
