How to stop at a stop sign, stop junction. This might sound an easy thing to do but over half of students who try this for the first couple of times get it wrong. Also if you get it wrong on the driving test, then its a serious fault which would fail you your driving test.
So, the simple answer is stop just before the stop solid white line, do not cross it, do not move slowly passed it, stop and secure the car.
Once you have stopped the car complete the observations to the right and left before moving forward slowly. Also the stop sign is there because the local council have deemed that junction dangerous and they want you to stop the car and look.
Tips to help you:
If you stop short, then move forward to where the solid white line is then stop the car again, secure the car , then check to the right and left before moving off.
A rolling stop will fail you on the driving test. This is when you approach the solid white line of a stop junction, slow down for first gear and because you can see its clear, you keep moving slowly forward and emerge out of the junction without stopping at the stop line.

Any chance of a video on blond spot mirrors? I did have disc ones on my side mirrors but I found I lost a lot of view. Problem with my car is I have to Tilt the mirrors all the way down just to see the curb or even try to see the parking bay lines

Good morning Phil. Travis provides great insightful wisdom, if only more drivers could adhere to better road manners with less haste. I have too much 'protected' dashcam footage from around my local area, it scares me to review some of it. having only moments to see what unfolds around you at the time, only realising afterwards how lucky I and some people are at the hands of so many aggressive and complacent drivers. Keep up the great work Travis.

Many drivers get over-confident and can't properly control two tonnes of potential killing machine, often misjudging their vehicles weight and dimensions, and/or intentionally using their over-powered and over-sized 'off-roaders' as vehicular weapons, a means to bully and intimidate other road users into giving way to their 'complacent' often aggressive and dangerous driving. My advice to everyone... get a reliable front/rear HD dashcam. They prove themselves invaluable, often guaranteeing a successful insurance claim.

Hi Travis I have recently failed my practical driving test twice on the same thing STOP signs my instructor hasn’t taught/told me to use the handbrake when stopped at a stop sign it was actually my dad who has been driving for over 30 years says that he was always told when stopped to apply the handbrake and in to neutral it shows the examiner the car has came to a complete stop I am going for my 3rd and hopefully last attempt this week and was just wondering if that would help me.

Yes use your handbrake at a stop sign then select 1st and check both right and left before moving off. Good luck

Clearly "Stop" means stop and this is universally understood. Putting your handbrake on momentarily will assert this but not compulsory. However in all your junction work you have stopped in exactly the right place for the best view available however restricted it might be. The requirement is to stop at the stop line, like you have but I feel many candidates will stop one or two feet short of your selected positions. This makes their zone of vision too restricted to be able to take a decision to emerge safely. They need for as good a view as your clip examples before continuing and need to reposition. At a Give Way junction you can creep and peep and emerge on the roll safely. Peeping and creeping at a stop junction then emerging on the roll can be judged as not having "stopped at the line". In my opinion if you stop short at a stop junction cant see enough you will need to peep and creep until you can see enough, then even if it is actually safe to emerge, momentarily stop and then restart. I saw a real driving fail video on youtube where the candidate stopped well short of the stop line then crept forward and emerged on the roll being awarded a serious fault for not stopping at the stop line, resulting in a test fail despite the instructor feeling it was safe.

@@JamesTravis I have my test tomorrow, so can you clarify, if you've come to the stop line and stopped completely as you're supposed to, are you then not allowed to peep and creep for a better view?

In my mock test, I was given a feedback that I must stop completely with HAND Brakes ON on such STOP sign junctions. If you can clarify and help please?
@JamesTravis
@JamesTravis 2 жыл бұрын
At a stop sign you must stop the car. It is up to you if you want to use the handbrake or not. The advantage of putting the handbrake on is that it will tell the examiner on test that you have stopped. If you don’t use the handbrake on test in the UK then you must stop the car and keep your foot on the brake when stopped for a few seconds(lots of learners fail this last part because they let the car roll).

So we have to come to a complete stop and put the handbrake on and not creep and peep?
@JamesTravis
@JamesTravis 3 жыл бұрын
The best way is come to a complete stop and put handbrake on. You can stop without the handbrake and then move forward. But when students are on the test, then tend to rush stop junctions and fail for not stopping the car completely. They do what is called a rolling stop, which is as you stop you move off because it’s clear.

@@JamesTravis I see loads of drivers doing rolling stops at stop junctions that aren't all that blind. I'm not defending the practice - I'm just pointing it out as one of those apparent discrepancies between how one drives on the driving test, and how so many seem to drive every day.
