In a meta sense, Taken was John Wick before John Wick. It had the same kind of sleeper hit success, it reminded people how great the lead actor is, and it changed how action movies were shot in its immediate aftermath.

This film REALLY disturbs me because this REALLY happens to women, young girls and boys that are kidnapped and taken to certain countries, it's a rabbit hole that is so disturbing that it genuinely scars your soul for a long time. This reminded me why I can't watch these films anymore but I appreciate the increase in public awareness that it brings. Being involved in that "industry" should earn you an automatic death sentence by slow impalement.

Yeah, the second one is pretty dumb. They make this giant deal about her sucking at passing her driver's test and then the next thing you know she's able to drive a manual transmission around like it's nothing. I don't think I ever even saw the 3rd one.

One thing I absolutely love about this movie is that they don't tie the step-father into the slave ring. I was really afraid they were going to do that at the end and I think it's really refreshing that they didn't. A lesser movie would have.

yeah i actually like the step dad, he clearly cares about his step daughter asking what he can do to help and charts him a private flight to paris probably like 20-30k flight and flies them back to cause you know liam wouldnt make it without the cops catching him at the airport on the way back i mean the man left prints everywhere and shot a cops wife so i imagine he would need a private flight back.

Adding to this- I love that the stepfather, while not a former military man or anything dangerous of that sort, does everything he can to help Liam Neeson save her. Pretty much pays Liam's way to fuck those guys up and save his stepdaughter- Liams daughter- and doesn't hem or haw about "oh gosh why don't we just call the authorities or pay her ransom instead of whatever you're doing oh no golly gosh". I imagine a different movie where Liam and the Stepdad- both elite former military men but from different groups- put aside what differences they might have to band together to fuck up the kidnappers. "Stepdad and Dad Fuck Up Everyone", in theaters near you soon.

My absolute favourite part is when Liam Neeson enters the building where all the “Marcos” are located and counts in his mind how many men there are in the building so he’s prepared for how many he has to kill AND how he makes/listens to each one of them talk to find the match to the voice on the phone. Saw this in the theater... was NOT expecting it to be this dark. They pushed pretty far on showing exactly how horrific things are, and you know they didn't show half of what they could. So I love this movie. I love how his character doesn't say much before he executes his plan. But it's one of those movies that played several times right before my daughter went off to study abroad for a year. And I always joke with her that if something like this happens, all the people will hear on the other end of the line. Is me crying begging for them to return her. But as a father, I understand that you do what you need to do to save your child.

If you go on an organized tour with a tour guide and a driver of the coach/bus who drives you everywhere and you don't wander off on your own, you should be perfectly fine in basically any country where it's safe to travel. Tour companies won't go to countries where they can't keep you safe.

James' comments made this "dark" movie surprisingly hilarious. The weighty decision of whether to let your daughter stay in Paris for a week in a Montmartre penthouse (and follow U2 to several EU cities) -- well, that's not an easy call for a parent to make. I'm glad to see James empathize with such a heavy circumstance ;) Rewatch the moment Brian fires: he's got a clear shot past his daughter's head, just waiting for that split second of distraction -- then boom! before disgusting Mr. Mascara can even speak two words! Shrewd shot.

This movie certified the “old guy, action hero” genre was box office gold and is why Liam has had a major resurgence over this past decade. A lot of his characters are similar but most of the movies are fun. I would recommend going through the Taken movies as the plot makes sense for each. Also I think you’d love The Grey with Liam
