My dad was a WWII VET..field medic..he only had like a 2nd grade education but his mom was a Midwife and back during those times a Midwife did more than just deliver babies..she took care of all sorts of illnesses and wounds..and she took care of people in several counties here in Kentucky not just in the county they were from and so my dad learned a lot from her because he had to quit school because his dad passed away when he was very young and he was the oldest Male in the household so that meant he had to basically step up and be the man of the house at the age of 8 or 9 and help bring in income to support their family..I have a great love and respect for my dad..and I miss him and mom

You are making those memories for your kids. I have never watched your video before, but what I have read from comments on this song from various videos, is that we all have different things in our past that were tough for various reasons and we can't change that. However, we can all be better people today and not live in fear, not let the powers that be tell us how to live. We are so influenced from TV and news, & politicians that have no clue. We should all start just living and loving and make new good memories of how we took the evil back out of society and started to love our neighbor. I think that is what we all earn for.

I completely understand what you are saying. I knew my grandfather was in WW2, but never heard any details growing up. Later on taking freshman English I had the option to write a paper about him and WW2. By then, he was more comfortable talking about it. My professor absolutely loved the story about the island of Attu. My grandfather was still careful with details, and I did not ask him to expand on anything that I thought would upset him. These stories are so important to me when thinking back on his life.

I think the message behind the song is because the photographs were old that they were in black and white but saying "you should've seen it in colour" was a way of saying you had to be there to really appreciate what things were like then, as colour actually existed there in the real world, if maybe not in the photographs of the time.

My grandfather landed on Normandy Beach (WW2) when the water was still red with blood. He shared so many stories and i wish that i could remember them all. I feel like this song was written for him. Cotton farming in The Great Depression, World War 2, and getting married in June. I played this song for him a few years ago before he passed away and he loved it. Beautiful song.

I never thought about the fact that when people grow up without their parents or without their grandparents it’s like you don’t truly ever know who you are. My family was never wealthy but we at least knew our family’s history. I mean I can ask my grandma about her older brother that was at D-Day as one of Rudder’s Rangers. We even still have stories about an ancestor of mine that was a soldier in George Washington’s Army that fought at the Battle of Yorktown. But if I didn’t know who my parents were then I wouldn’t have any of that. It truly is tragic. I’m glad to see that you have risen above the challenges and don’t use it as a crutch in life. God bless.

It's a sad thing to not grow up with your rightful knowledge of your family. I was lucky enough to live next to my great grandmother and loved her stories. She was born on 1886, so a lot was passed on that she lived through.

Wow.... i was adopted... I have no connection to my past. Unfortunately i wasn't adopted into the ideal family. But my grandama (adopted) told me all her stories. We'd sit at the dining table and she would tell me how when she was a child her brothers job was to light the streetlamps. And how my grandpa helped raise the antenna on the empire state building and worked on building the brooklyn bridge. How he would always sho2 up with a stranger for dinner, and his nickname for her was "pots and pans". She was my connection to "family" She wasn't my blood but she was my heart...this song brings me back

My take is the song is telling you that you had to be there----a picture alone can't convey the situation. That 'you shoulda seen it in color " is his way of saying you can't understand the fear of hard times, the worry of being shot down, taking on the responsibility of starting a married life the full range of emotions just from a snapshot.

The generiational knowledge passed down to children is so important, because they're not just learning it from a history book. My uncle fought in the Korean War and tells stories about driving his Jeep under sniper fire and just trying to survive. iI asked some young teens I met recently why we have a North and South Korea and they didn't even know. This is sad and it is really pathetic. We've lost so many good young men to try and keep South Korea free and today's kids have no idea why

He was referring to old photographs. Photos used to be in black and white before color photo technology existed. You’re so young you might not have seen boxes of old black and white photo, especially in the absence of a dad and grandparents. Beautiful, honest reaction. There is a line in a different song that says “if you never knew your daddy, like I never knew mine, it seems like everybody knows you’re fatherless.” It pulls at my heart every time. My father wasn’t around much either. Consider reacting to Rock in Rio version of Iron Maiden’s Sign of the Cross sometime.

Hope that makes sense without being ugly. I will say this your mother must have been a Queen to raise a King. You are one nice, kind hearted person, intelligent person.. Love watching you! It was World War 2 in the 1940s, and we fought the Japanese. I didn't know my grandparents either. I only met an aunt, uncle, and cousin on my Dad's side, one time. My mother's parents died before I was born. So I can relate. My father wasn't around because he was an abusive alcoholic so my mom left him. I do have my mom's stories about her childhood though, and I knew her sister. She had brothers but we never met.

This song is as moving as always. My aunt and I work on genealogy and both of us sooooo regret that we never asked anyone to tell us "stories of the good old days"... and now there's no one left to ask. All we have left are a few black and white photos... and a family who never wrote when, where, or who on the backs of them!

I love, love, love this song! I'm sorry you didn't have the opportunity to form a relationship with your extended family. I know that I'm beyond lucky to have known not only all of my grandparents, but I also new all of my great grandparents. Both my mom and dad's parents were all alive until I was 26. My paternal grandfather was the first to pass, followed by my paternal grandmother two years later. I'm extremely close to my maternal grandparents, and thank God above they are both still here. My maternal grandmother was in occupied Poland during WWII. Her father lived to be 104 and his sister 106. My paternal grandmother was an Iroquois from the Seneca tribe. I remember being very young, and her mother, my great grandmother would visit from the reservation. She had the darkest eyes I've ever seen, I'd go as far as to say black. She passed down so much about our history to my Dad, who in turn passed it down to my siblings and I. I am so grateful to have first hand knowledge of both sides of my heritage, even moreso knowing that a vast majority of people never have that opportunity.
