I’ve grown up in Setauket and spent many days riding bikes in Strongs Neck and all along 25a during the late 1970s. I'm Canadian and was looking for a historical drama to watch on Netflix. I came across this, which I had seen a few times but passed over simply because I thought it was called "Turn" and the cover of the series looked modern. It wasn't until I saw it was actually recommended that I clicked on it to see the "Washington's Spies" part of the title which I hadn't noticed before. (Sorry, but the fact that "Turn" was so much larger, and the text for "Washington's Spies" was so small, I simply missed it when scanning through titles.) I gave this a chance in October, 2021 and I absolutely fell in love with it! It is a bit cerebral at times, so paying attention to details especially at first is key. This was a bit tricky with some fast-talking, whispered dialogue with multiple accents to keep up with. As a Canadian with only general knowledge of American history, it was a pleasure to watch this. I kept referencing the historical facts to see how authentic it was, and was pleased to see that so much of it fell in line with actual people, and true events. Throughout it all, visually this show was just beautiful with costumes and settings that were so true to its time. I loved the old homes and how people milled out their days and evenings. In today's world of instant gratification and everything-online, this show relaxed me each time I had it on. Such tumultuous times, yet so serene and simple were their lives. I'm also glad that this series allowed me to know more about American history, whereas otherwise I might not have been so captivated by it.

@@anarchistatheist1917 He was not actually British. He was born in Mount Vernon, which at the time was a British colony, but he was very much what one of the "first Americans" would have sounded like. Those British accents didn't just magically disappear upon birth, they were eventually edged out with each generation and depended on their environment. For example the Woodhall family were more secluded and spoke with their [new] accents amongst themselves in Setauket. Washington back then would have also sounded much more regal due to his position. He came from a different generation, and had a different life from common people, making him sound more "proper" and well-to-do.

I grew up outside of Trenton NJ and they have the route marked out where General Washington led the Troops who attacked the Hessians in Trenton to Princeton NJ and was able to turn the war around. The Battle of Monmouth outside of present day Freehold NJ is another example of the Old Fox when he relieved General Charles Lee of command and took the Victory there. It was also interesting to find out that the US Navy was raiding the stores the British had in the Bahamas. I liked the question about the difference in handling weapons of the day, one thing never brought out was the beginning of Season 1 Episode 3 O Cabbages and Kings, when one of the guards who were guarding Simcoe had a double barreled flintlock and watching him handle that weapon was impressive.

What a great show! I avoided it for a while, since it seemed like it might be boring (spies), but it was very entertaining. Samuel Roukin was a great villain as Simcoe, and Kahn plays an original, fresh Washington with real personality, as does Yeoman who plays Benedict Arnold, and all his subtle anger and insecurities. I think Bell is actually the weakest link, not because he's a bad actor, but because they told him to play his character too tightly-wound and tight-lipped. A successful spy must blend in, and show a bit of CHARM and learn how to cavort and connive, but they had Bell's Abraham seething with anger, nervousness, and his darting, shifty eyes--no WONDER he was always getting ambushed! But props to them all for such a nice production and some real history (although buffs will always have problems with fictional recreations). Nice ending episode, also!

@barbaro2678 жыл бұрын
I think it's known worldwide as the greatest country in the world, whether or not it actually is. That is because it is a place for refugees of war, famine, and persecution. It is a place where people can earn their place in the world through meritocracy. It is a place with some of the richest cultural influences from around the globe. It is a place of invention, of creativity, and unique culture. The fact that America has accomplished what it has in the short amount of time that it's existed it incredible. The fact that America is young and yet is a powerhouse in media, technology, and economy shows how great the country is. Saying it is the greatest might sound egotistical but, at least historically (in the 1900's), America was seen as the greatest country in the world because of what it stood for, what it fought so hard to become.
