@@tonyrobertson1085 Your notion that fiction should require an author to have a meaningful, personal connection to the places or themes they're writing about, is quite frankly, ridiculous. Better pull Lord of the Rings from the shelves, as I don't believe Tolkien properly consulted the elves. And whilst you're at it, you can pull all fiction by Noongar authors that reference English colonialists and England itself, because I'm not seeing consultations with the Brits referenced in their work. Rules for thee but not for me. Fiction is fictitious - that's the whole point. If this had been non-fiction, I would have completely agreed with you, but it's not, so I don't.
@tonyrobertson10854 күн бұрын
@@monologic_ I did not say ‘meaningful, personal connection’. An author has a responsibility to the reader to have some knowledge about what he is writing. Tolkien who is rightly considered one of the greats of the 20th century created a world from whole cloth with his imagination but your point is moot because it’s fantasy. If you could cite some of these Noongar authors name I’d be happy to have a look at them and get back to you. My guess is that you have a very small pool to choose from. This discussion loses its heat when we realise that Jamie Oliver voluntarily withdrew his book when he understood his mistake.

First Nation Is a term stolen from Canada. Using the term here is disingenuous and an absolute fabrication. There were no ‘nations’ of aboriginal people. Do not accept the lie that Aboriginals were these great primitive group of ‘nations’. This nonsense of aboriginals being ‘noble savages’ that were caretakers of the land is absolute total nonsense. What author has not at one time published something that in someway didn't portray a topic exactly the way another person or group of people would like it to be portrayed. All books do that. As do movies. As does all art. This brought to mind the clips of the Lamas in the Temple in Pet Detective 2. Were the Tibetans in an uproar because the film had mocked and made fun of their traditions with the depiction of monks partying and rebel rousing in the temple? Were they offended because there culture had been used for comedy. Did they feel their age old traditions had been stereotyped and trivialised by a non Tibetan film maker. People have a right to self expression. If you don't like it, then move on. He shouldn't have apologised anymore than one would indulge and appease an ill mannered child.
