A brother that goes to university is good but in the end of day you're education is not that degree it is what you learn in life. Being comfortable with yourself and your intelligence without something to prove on paper makes you even stronger than people with that degree.

Yea but real in life. The most realest are the the one like Jamie Overstreet or Ghost because they are Thorough which brings Masculinity about. Society now wants too downgrade this or eradicate from existance. It's not a Mask if the Life is true.
@nana-bj8fe6 жыл бұрын
So true on that mask you need to have in the corporate environment...as a brother it takes away your assertiveness and creativeness because so much of your time is spent try to make the dominant society comfortable.
@RomWills6 жыл бұрын
That's a serious issue. I've spent many a time in HR NOT for sexual harassment but because I wasn't cooperative with a supervisor which translated to I was subservient enough.

Going through some bullshit on my job.Been here 10 years and there's a lot of female toxic energy at the workplace. My direct supervisor is a openly gay man looks just like Elton John mixed with Drew Carey.I'm comfortable here but shit is getting really petty so I'm polishing off the resume and exploring other options. Tired of wearing my mask here.
@maxsweet30006 жыл бұрын
The wearing of the mask is quite draining. As BM, it feels like you are constantly walking on egg shells. At home, at the job, in public. Maybe it's just me that feels this way. I don't know.

It's not just you. Many brothas have felt the same way.

Eugene Thompson you aren't alone. I just entered a corporate environment a year ago. When i started I quickly realized that being me, myself was frowned upon. I adjusted and felt terrible. I still do to some extent here and there. Still trying to negotiate between being me and being acceptable in corporate America.

In many ways a lot of black men are like Jamie Overstreet. We know how to put up a humble appearance with certain people and we can be street when need to be. Most Italian mobsters like Al Capone presented themselves as benevolent men of their communities but, were viscous gangsters behind closed doors.

This whole show is just another feather in the feminist girl power camp. One average female able to control different archetypes of men with her sexuality. So many fundamentally Disingenuous scenarios presented to shape perceptions about her promiscuity. Most viewers aren’t going to see the character nuances of Jamie Overstreet just she had three BM under her spell. BW want to celebrate and copy in their own lives.

True because they want too display the Female as Masculine bold courages too undermine Men like Jamie Overstreet Authentic brotha. Society is pushing this agenda publicly and mainstream. Shows the display masculinity from Men are Power Ghost/St. Patrick and Jamie Overstreet She's Got To Have it when really it's He's Got To Have It by any means necessary. Guys think that you can't be this type of dude in real life a Thorough man. Like Rom said you have to hit All Cylinders in life this is true power. Let's strive to be this as Men whether people see you as a fraud or not put in the work the results will show.

I know all about the mask and it's very exhausting being in a corporate environment. The best bet for black men is to set some financial goals such as paying off a house or putting a certain amount of money in the bank and getting the hell out as quick as possible. I've just applied to go back to school for a degree in a field where I can apply my talents and skills and be my natural self.

I highly recommend season 2 of that show She’s gotta have it Unc Rom if you haven’t already, that actually did go into depth on that Jamie character he certainly has deep street ties apart from that professional suit and tie persona he lets on , the brotha has a street background , book smart yet got some hood in him and might I add I personally didn’t remain tuned in for the Nola BS she’s reminds me a lot of Issa from Insecure , but that Overstreet storyline was just intriguing

One last thing I’ll comment I concur with you on this , I’m not much of a compromising man most times “ just enough “ to maintain my day job for now atleast, reasons I’m not corporate myself in my current life, I work and also entrepreneur, but still mostly blue collar, honestly brotha I refuse to tuck my balls in , so working for myself is a must. Self respect over riches or any pleasures.

Uncle Rom, I just finished this series, and your analysis of Jamie is spot on. Jamie started off very conservative and boring in the first four episodes. That fifth episode is when you started seeing his more aggressive side especially during his conversations with his wife, son, and Winnie Wen. He definitely made the show more interesting and I wish he was in more episodes.

Jamie went to fat joe for the 10k, not bc he didn't have it, but bc his wife canceled the check he wrote to Nola for her painting when she found out he was cheating on her. Jamie is very misunderstood. He's not a simp, it's the married man side piece game. Married men who play have that single homie who can book hotels, trips, etc. so the wife doesn't see it, and pays him back gradually. As I commented on bgs' vid, 10k is chump change for an investment banker. Jamie is a classic man (education lame) who grew up around the way. Fat Joe took the L and served time for him back in the day, bc he pulled Jamie into that situation back then, and he knew Jamie would make it out. I agree that Jamie is a spinoff show by himself. He was my favorite character also.

The idea of a spin off that would be cool. You would have to get real men to write and direct it. Men who understand the various paths we go thru .

Actually rewatched this show again recently, Jamie’s character is most interesting of them all on the show, the one with the most depth, I relate most to him, thing is I could never fathom his fascination with Nola Darling especially with him knowing how she was, I mean I understand the lust aspect , but him wanting her so much so that he was branching himself out farther than any man should ever do to get any woman, besides if it were me I wouldve tried it to get passed the frustration of deal with the boujee upity wife that he had cause let’s be honest the sista was fine but at the same time she was actually stable and I’m sure all she really needed was him consistently putting that work on her in bed but something about her seem a bit repressed, so I get why he desire Nola so much, anyways I still would’ve kept my focus on my family rather than the side piece as he was doing ,

'Overstreet'.. interesting surname in light of the character analysis. I'm like you Rom, it's not in my nature to be subservient & tuck my balls away, suppress my masculinity as a black man to make others feel comfortable (although we've all had to do it at one time or another, some of us had to un-learn the programming), so entrepreneurialism was the only way. I hope more masked Brothers follow suit and write their own destiny, build their own machine, rather than be clog in someone else's; a 'Union of Superior (Black) Men'. Anyway, I'll have to check this show out sometime
@RomWills6 жыл бұрын
That would be great if a spinoff showed him spreading his wings.

And as you said honestly and truly a Jamie overstreet type would not tolerate the likes her a Nola Darling type out side of some late night back breaking atleast in real life, couple of my homeboys who are similar to him have dealt with plenty and they don’t take her type seriously at all.
@JTu89256 жыл бұрын
I knew from the jump that Jamie would be your boy, he's the most relatable to you, age, status, has children. Wow. You make a great point. We should all just be able to be ourselves. Men in other cultures wear the mask too. Even white guys wear the mask haha. It's just levels to this shit. Mars and Greer were over the top yes, but they add to the drama. I peeped how they made the lesbian woman seem the most sane, yet her situation is confused too. Three headed monster...pshh, foh with that. Lol

Your intellectual prowess will often times dictate how a man interacts with you. Aggressiveness has little affect on a thinking woman in fact it can actually diminish a man's influence. Remember this is a man interacting with a highly intelligent complex woman not another man, so the same rules don't apply. A man who can make the proper adjustments according to the environment doesn't make him "soft" moreso evolved.

I consider myself a very strong woman and oddly enough almost always attract alpha males who appear to be hard to the outside world but just as soft as tissue with me.

Jamie is the more developed and relatable character especially when you live in NYC. Mars was a bit too over the top for me. If they had introduced a genius hood bruiser type then the show would have been a few episodes short.

I'll check it out. Characters like this move people and are seldomly notice. It's like being seen but unseen in public. Its a energy thing thats why your presence and they way you carry yourself matters. I'm pretty sure this Jamie Overstreet has this same energy as Ghost/St. Patrick Business man and Street savvy. People don't seem to understand this especially us guy's watch how a female will drool over a Man like Overstreet or St. Patrick on Tv then a regular 9 to 5 dude.
