He has a passionate love of this specific expression of animation to work there-- He would generally earn twice as much, be working 9-5 with weekends as opposed to 12 hour days, 6-7 days a week, if he had decided to work in North America or Europe. Very few anime fans understand that the artists who create these works are basically living to animate while working under conditions that would likely be illegal in other developed nations. Great work sir.
