it became one of Burl Ives's signature songs, included on his 1944 album The Wayfaring Stranger. Ives used it as the title of his early 1940s CBS radio show and his 1948 autobiography. He became known as "The Wayfaring Stranger". I'd say that predates Johnny Cash, Jamie Woon AND Ed sheeran. ;)

I prefer this version much more, I think he really captures the melancholy of the words incredibly, his voice is almost chilling, brrrr....very talented singer.
@tubhead5813 жыл бұрын
I'm actually appalled that Ed Sheeran's version of this has more views than this one. Yeah, Sheeran's talented, but this is far more soulful and Woon's own adaptation of a song of a completely different style. Kudos to Woon for this arrangement.

we're all entitled to our opinions so i freely disagree with yours. i think the fact that Ed Sheeran made it famous makes his version perfected. Doesn't mean i don't appreciate Jamie's version. just think Ed perfected it.

@@DrWangThao that's great, but over there on the video which he's put up which has soooo many views, there's no mention of Jamie Woon. It sucks.
@dumfriesspearhead73983 жыл бұрын
@@nushious Yeah it's a cop out as comparatively fewer people will see it on TV, than on YT. I guess Sheeran is scared that too many people will look up Jamie Woon instead of staying on his channel.

"The Wayfaring Stranger" (aka "Poor Wayfaring Stranger" or "I Am a Poor Wayfaring Stranger"), Roud 3339, is a well-known American spiritual/folk song likely originating in the early 19th century[1] about a plaintive soul on the journey through life. As with most folk songs, many variations of the lyrics exist

Arnav Covers where was the word 'hate' used in my comment?? You brought up hate. Not a fan of the word myself. Also, where did I say that people shouldn't enjoy what they want to???
@pauldancestotheradio12 жыл бұрын
This is miles better than the Ed Sheeran version, because whereas Ed Sheeran takes the soul of the original (which is an old American spiritual) and replaces it with a plastic pop music heart, Jamie acknowledges the original, with his use of the pentatonic scale, and his understated use of his own vocal range. Ed just sounds like he's showing off how many notes he can fit in a bar with all the ornamentation he uses, Jamie sounds like he loves the track for what it is, not for what he is.
@dumfriesspearhead73983 жыл бұрын
Very good explanation. Sheeran's version lacks heart. Woon is all about serving the song.

I am a poor wayfarin' stranger Trav'lin' through this world alone. There's no sickness, toil or danger In that bright land to which I go. I'm goin' there to see my mother I'm goin' there, no more to roam; I'm only goin' over the Jordan I'm only goin' over home. I know dark clouds will gather 'round me I know my way is rough an' steep; But beautiful fields lie just beyond me Where souls redeem their vigils keep. And I'm goin' there to see my father I'm goin' there, no more to roam; I'm only goin' over the Jordan I'm only goin' over home. I wanna wear that crown of glory When I get home to that bright land; And I wanna shout down Satan's story In concert with the bloodwashed band. And I'm goin' there to see my brothers They said they'd meet me when I come; But I'm only goin' over the Jordan I'm only goin' over home.

Wait, because there is no proof he doesn't exist, he must exist? Oh by that logic, there must be unicorns that and fairies that live underground. They must exist, right? We can't prove otherwise. No, we live in a logical world. The theory of evolution considers that humans and apes may share a common ancestor, not that we evolved from monkeys. I'm tired of reading and hearing that.

Come on, lighten up. The Burial version is where it's at and it wouldn't have happened without this version. Speaking of Americana, "Change is gonna come"... all the good songs will be "butchered" as you call it sooner or later. Change is constant. But I also agree that the original is a hell of a song and it's hard to imagine anyone surpassing it.

i prefer this one to ed sheerans. although this is a very old song, woons cover is original as an acapella. Ed's version is pretty much exactly the same as this one! all the harmonies are the same. it would have been nice if he'd put his own twist on it.

I wouldn't say they are "completely different", but would rather say "completely similar". But yeah, Ed's version is pretty cool too. I'm just curious to know if he intentionally copied Jamie Woon here, because the similarity is more than obvious.

@qwertypluss Despite being sung by many people, and many different renditions, if you see the Jools Holland live show of Sheeran playing this, he actually says 'this is a cover of Jamie Woon's Wayfaring Stranger'. I heard this version second, and i've got to say... I think I prefer it. But that's just an opinion.

There is a God debate here because Jamie Woon is saying that he wants to shout down Satan's story...Salvation-to be saved and forgiven by Christ...the original lyric, means so much to a believer that this change makes the song almost horrible. Why would he make that change? Woon's vocals are amazing but maybe his views are a bit shady. I don't preach devil doom magic and blahblahbla, but there really are devil worshipers out there. Not saying that Jamie Woon definately iis one..but..why the lyric change? I assume that is the question, or the reason for "religious debate" here.

I thought I was the only one who realized.
@camouflagedgoon798710 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't give it too much gravitas. I assume he simply means that he has discovered some form of darkness in his soul and he is getting rid of it. Well, that's at least how I always interpreted that line. Nothing to do with worshipping satan, more to do with coming to terms with the darkness and evil we all possess in our hearts and thus getting rid of it.
@Soer958810 жыл бұрын
I kind of felt it as him shouting AT Satan. He shouts down what Satan stands for, Satan's words.
@Odom04079 жыл бұрын
Camouflaged Goon To sum it up, he is saying he is a stranger to this world, alone, doesn't belong, his home is not on earth but in heaven. shouting Satan's story is shouting his defeat. He simply saying once He receives the crown of glory (which scriptures says we receive when we overcome temptations of this dark world) finally makes it to that land (referring to heaven) he will be reunited with his real family.
@suomynona10089 жыл бұрын
Camouflaged Goon yep. I think the same way. He doesn't worship Satan.

Not trying to diss on Woon because he is very talented but theres not enough soul. Ed sheeran puts more of his heart into the song.

@seongjun91 I agree, this is the best version. Sheeran is only a boy with a nice voice, Jamie Woon is a true genius. The only other version that I like so much is the 16 Horsepower one.

@sswwiinnccee aw why did you have to say that and make me respond?! lol. This is a really old folk tune, you cant say it wasnt worth covering until this guy did it because if people hadnt covered it before and down through the years it could have been lost! Thats the beauty of songs like this mate! But as long as you like the words or the tune, then thats all that matters ;) Though i have to say if i was jamie i'd be a little hurt the top comment is about ed sheerans cover of his cover...
@MrJajaja1613 жыл бұрын
Wayfaring stranger is most likely a slave song... There's a story that it was composed by Bishop Allen, who was born a slave and founded the African M.E chruch... We know at least that Charles David Tillman publicised the lyrics by combining bits from the "Christian songster" and "Plantation melodies"... he was also responsible for popularising the lyrics' combo with "the minor key tune of various African American and Appalachian nuance" If ur bein a racist shit, ur also plain incorrect.

Jack white wrote this originally so you can stop all the comments about the producer, and Ed Sheeran and Jamie Woon are friends so Im sure the cover wasnt made to be compared to this version but to experiment so stop arguing over who's you prefer, and most of all just chill the fuck out and enjoy the music.
@sswwiinnccee13 жыл бұрын
I heard the ed sheeran version first,then I listened to the jonny cash version then jack white's.Couldn't believe how different they were,THEN I heard this version and I now see where Ed got it from.Love ed's version and I love this too it's just good to hear where Ed got his inspiration from,the song wouldn't of been worth covering if not for this.

@PaterFrog Just a comment... I do not know if this young man is a christian or not. I think we have to be careful 'bout judging how others worship provided it's not blasphemous. Actually, this really moved me. Regardless, I know it's possible for God to use even those who may be heathen or pagan to reach the saved....
@Brodin131316 жыл бұрын
This is a beautiful song. Jamie has an amazing voice and there's no doubt about that. But I don't think this song is good for him, sure it sounds nice but with the way he has produced it I think it has lost it's depth and meaning to it. It just seems to me that he's just singing it for the sake of singing. I know that's a bit harsh but it's what I think.

Nice song, but I always prefer live music, and the way Sheeran actually builds the track on stage puts it ahead of this version for me. But I'm not a childish zealot like some so I'm not going to shit on Woon's in an effort to convince myself that I'm right.
