communication is KEY! from meeting/ talking to the new client to the first appt! I have learned that educating my clients on the how's and why's of their color service and end result makes us both 1. more comfortable 2. we can be realistic about the end result and 3. i will gain her trust AND LOYALTY!!! At the end of the day they trust us with their total look and we earn their loyalty by educating ourselves FIRST!!!!!

Average Me I can 100% relate to this! As a student I thought “what am I doing? How can I ever have a conversation with a stranger!?” But with time and a lot of awkward moments, you will feel more comfortable and it will be easier for you. You’ll learn that the people who belong in your chair will be there. You won’t click with everyone and that’s ok!

Average Me: Ask about them, family, hobbies, work, current (non-political) events and/or movies, for starters.... when I see my client light up about something (like talking about their kids) I tend to stay on that subject ...it usually ends in them showing me tons of photos of their kids, but then they love you even MORE! :) If you're client is not into small talk, give them a magazine and maybe comment here and there (I'm a talker so it's HARD for me to be in silence) I'll even SING/hum to whatever is playing while I do hair if it's too quite....Also, I like breaking the ice with opening up about myself...or a little joke (I think I'm funny). I might say something about my day or week that'll lead to a great conversation. It could be something as simple as "I was in my friend's wedding last week, I served on Jury duty this month, I finally made it to the beach this week" then have a follow up..."have you ever been in a wedding? Have you ever served on a jury? Have you been to the beach this summer?" Be genuinely curious and just relax and don't worry about being judged. You will get better and better at this "small talk" stuff. Trust me. I was extremely shy before I became a hairdresser and now I have reviews where new clients are saying "it felt like I was hanging out with my girlfriend" and "she's so nice and personable" ,etc (which of course adds NO pressure...haha) But, with that said, positive feedback on hair results is much MORE important than small talk so even if there is awkward silence during your service you're going to gain that client by delivering AmAzInG hair results! ....You got this Average Me...soon to be Extraordinary Me! I'd love to see Jamie do a video on this topic as well!! PS..take notes on what you chatted about or what might have stood out to you in the conversations you had. Your clients will appreciate you remembering they just had a granddaughter or went on that European vacation at their next visit. ;)

Start charging what your worth and don't overthink it! The client can decide if they want to pay that. It's not up to you to decide for them :).

Go thru ur services and really think about how long it takes. What products cost that u use foils lighteners toners shampoo mark olaplex. Make a price list based on all that. Then with every new client use it! With your regulars that have been getting by on the cheap make adjustments as needed.

How great! It is so easy to feel sorry for a client and want to help correct a mistake they made...while making a mistake in not charging for my own time and then I feel as if I did the home highlight box color cover up to myself...because I have pulled myself into a long complicated stressful service with very little compensation...thank you so much for mapping out the great way to make sure both my client and myself are happy!! I had a potential client who needed color correcting and she sent pictures of several techniques, shades, and styles and even colors. She clearly didnt understand what she wanted. I tried to explain how her expectations were impossible and I really tried to work with her and make her understand how difficult what she wanted would be but in the end I had to refuse her. That was very frustrating. I love your videos thank you for sharing so much!!

Hi Jamie. I think a good video would be dramatic high/low. Like for example a pastel level 10 with a 4-5 lowlight. And most important, how the rinse at the shampoo bowl effects the final result. Keeping as much contrast as possible. This is something I do alot of. I think how you remove color at the bowl is so important to the final result. My style is to do the lows first as it takes time to deposit just like lift. Then I usually go in with Olaplex/lightener and a higher developer to get the blonde done quickly. I'm a fast foiler after doing hair for almost 40 years! But I like to isolate each foil during the rinse using it as a shield to protect the colors against each other. Using cooler water also helps along with spot shampooing. I time it so that the front foils are not quite done as all this organizing takes time. But this would really help a newer stylist.

As soon as you started talking about the photos I said No you need to get a consult check first before you open up your mouth, you lay out the parameters to weed out the people who just want to pick your brain. Because of so much on you tube, we all know how to pick the brain of generous experts who have a passion for what they do. I was overpromised and it took 3 sessions to still not be able to get out the orange/yellow and since I volunteered for an experiment for the colorist's learning, it only cost me my time and a big tip, but it took hours and hours to still get what I didn't want plus I have breakage, more than expected. She did not explain this, I thought I was going to spend the whole day with her, and be done with it. Which is why I am here, to get some knowledge to self correct.

Really great advice, these are the steps I do as well, but instead of signing a waiver, I usually do a recap of consultation, and make a point of stressing that there is no guarantee of specific results like level, achieved or tone. And let’s face it if it is the colour correction with a lot of brassiness, and with certain people if they’re spending $600, they might have unrealistic expectations. I would never tell them you were going to look beautiful when you leave, that’s a very high bar, especially if the person isn’t really beautiful to begin with
