What someone calls the size is relative. Pretty much all the long timers on the North Shore call it the old way (from the back or however you want to describe it) but a swell we called 6' would have a 12' face at Pipe and maybe an 8-10' face at Leftovers or Chuns. The point is when your buddy calls you up and says it's 4-6' you both have an idea of how much energy is out there. I think Jamie called this day 3-4'. I probably would have called it 4-6'. My limit of enjoyment used to be 10' (I would be scared when I paddled out in 12' surf) but my limit has certainly dropped. 4-6' is my enjoyment limit now. The worst is those 3-9' days. That means it looks manageable but there would be cleanup sets. That can be scary at Ali'is.

Jamie = my knee is sore. = So he goes out and does 50 backside off the tops with big high impact drops, which are probably one the highest impact landings in surfing (besides massive airs). I know from experience. I had (still have) lower back issues and two things I had to be careful with #1 layback drop ins (which I just love) and backside lip smashes coming down straight with the lip (also love). But they both put a lot of stress on my back, knees, and ankles. Jamie - rest that knee on the off days. My knee also bothers me, but my back is a bigger issue overall. Heel up. Hope you don't have any ligament or tendon tears. They need about 6 weeks to heel up. Good luck.
