How to have BETTER IDEAS
Every great creative project that’s ever been made - whether it was photography, a book, a film, a video game, an invention - have all had one key factor factor in common that makes them great, and that was their being built around a good idea. A solid and creative idea is the most fundamental aspect to any project. It’s what holds it all together.
But how to do we train our brains to think of good ideas? Let me take you through a 4-step process.

I just experienced this yesterday in the bathtub. Someone recently told me "maybe you should portrait your perfectionism instead" as a spite on me saying I wasn't happy with a picture I took - and it stuck with me. Now yesterday night, way past midnight and when I'm usually awake, it came to me that this perfectionism is hard to display, but the bits and pieces of it in our everyday life are happening every time. And then my bathtub almost flooded the the room because I filled it to the brim while thinking and that's when it struck me: "Perfectionism - all or nothing." Grabbed my camera and shot the first image of what might become a series of things that are done all the way or not at all - even if the outcome .ight be negative (like here, the water flowing over when going inside). It's gonna be interesting times from now on, because the mind is sharpened and the eyes are focused to see something that was always there but never shown in its own light.

Less is most definitely more. Many other KZbin content creators have long since ran out of ideas and are now repackaging their same old stuff over and over just to keep posting 1-2 videos a week just to stand still. It's stale and it shows. Jamie on the other hand only posts when he has something new to say and that on KZbin is so refreshing. Bravo sir!!

and the "photographers" with nothing to say almost always let you know the camera that they shot the episode on in the title in the hope of capturing an audience from that brand's fanboys. The content becomes a secondary consideration.

I have to agree. While all artist/creatives should revisit or update their ideals, post and tutorials... It's important to communicate things from a different perspective to provide more insight. Jamie does an excellent job with leaving some "meat on the bone" for viewers to adopt these concepts and use accordingly.

I think often (or at least for me this is true) people are quick to dismiss a good idea, just because it look so obvious that it doesn't seem possible you were the first to come up with it. It happens all the time to think "sure somebody else has already thought of this". Most of the times it is also true, which makes it even more difficult to stop thinking that way.
@jamiewindsor
@jamiewindsor 3 жыл бұрын
I think this is very true. During my design career, there were countless times I came up with something in the first 10 mins and then spent an additional week developing and rethinking, only to throw it all out and go back to the initial idea at the end. I've learnt that it's not wasted time though, it's all part of the process.

This channel is fast become less about photography and more a sound philosophical blue print towards living a fulfilled life. I have a noted dopamine response when I receive a KZbin notification from this channel, which to me, is further evidence that, despite the theories that technology maybe driving us apart, but that many are seeking out mentors that speak truth and give advice on subjective thought, individuality, creativity and encourage a self reflective honest conversation with the self. The exact opposite of the main stream media narrative, in my humble opinion. Thanks JW

I'm following KZbin channels about photography for four years now and so far you and Dan Milnor are the only two KZbinrs who talked about the importance of reading for photography. On the one hand this really surprises me, on the other hand one glance at Instagram tells you that for most people photography is about looks and not about communicating something. (Disclaimer: of course, I'm guilty of this too)

I have pages and pages of idea but i’m a sucker for complexity and the exercise of thinking through an idea is the part that I enjoy. The momentary obsession with a thing. What I’ve found is a really useful exercise is to set yourself up for failed project. You have no actual resources but you need a halloween outfit in 2 hours or a video of yourself downing a beer for your friends right away or you’re at this place for the next 3 hours painting some ceramic thing. So it’s ok if you make something awful because there aren’t any expectations for it to be good. That’s when my creativity shines (even though after 6 hours even my most loyal friend would have abandoned me at the ceramics place). Then you get nice results and someone says “imagine what you could have done if you had more time” - The attention is wonderful but all that comment does is add to a sense of dread that where I actually start my project with my big idea it has to be this impossible over complicated masterpiece. And making that sounds like no fun at all 🙈 I decided to go into engineering rather than the arts because you can have just as much fun designing a gearbox but the expectations (and clients) are way less fussy

The fastest way to figure out a good idea: follow through. Idea after idea. Being the creator, you can't be totally objective about "good ideas", so assume they're all good enough to flesh out. Popular opinion will determine what society or culture thinks is a "good idea." But we can't do that for ourselves. Learn to love your ideas, no matter how small or how frequent or infrequently they occur. Learn to not just bring them into existence through your mind but through your workflow. If you're sitting there and have a sort of eureka moment, just follow it to the end. I believe the reason we view others as having "good" ideas while ours are only "okay" or "passable" is that THEY finished the work. You can render an opinion on a finished piece, but you can't on an abandoned project. Of course, train and learn and educate yourself, that will make it easier to execute whatever idea you have. Just don't give up. Even if you're the only one who see's the potential in the work. Great video and topic. Well done Mr. Windsor.

Thank you for your videos Jamie! You and Daniel Milnor are the only people in the realm of photography that I can binge on if I want inspiration and creative ideas. You’re my favorite presenter on KZbin and I’m so thankful that we have you. Thank you for the inspiration and motivation. Btw, I hope you do another Christmas video this year 😂 Wishing you and yours a happy and healthy holiday season! 🎄

The general rule i have developed is: never start out trying to do something good. Instead, do something random or even crappy and then make it good. Everyone fights "blank page syndrome", where you feel frozen and unable to make that first mark because you don't want to put it in the wrong place, or be the wrong thing. "It was a..." No That's passive. "The man jumped..." Too direct. You realize that rather than putting things right from the start you can take things that are there are improve them.

Preach! Jamie you're spot on with everything hinging on the idea and this has to be the most valuable videos on the internet for coming up with ideas. Thanks for breaking these ideas down (no pun intended) I'm going to try these out in 2021.

I believe that's the difference between good photographers, which are many, and great photographers, which are few. Good ones take great pictures and that's it. Great ones have an idea and go seek their pictures, and use them to express a concept or a feeling to then turn them into a serie. The first ones have great technical skills and that's it, second ones have great technical skills and a goal to use them for
