In my experience with the bins...I have encountered feces, vomit, rough metal edges and broken glass. I now keep a pair of cheap cotton garden gloves (mine have a grippy surface) in the trunk of my car to protect my hands when rummaging through the bins! Please get some gloves!
@lesliejohnson7247 Жыл бұрын
Agreed. I only had the heart to go once and wore gloves. In the corners of the bins were lies of unidentifiable “dirt.” - no relation to soil!

I used to make 36” Raggedy Ann and Andy and sold them for nice bucks at a children’s boutique in Boston. That’s how I brought money in when I stayed home with my kids. I have the play barn too with all the little people and farm animals as well. I am hoping to go Goodwill shopping on Saturday. You always get cool finds!

I went to Welfare Square when I first moved to Salt Lake City back in 1990. I also got a job at The Inn At Temple Square. It used to be across the street from Temple Square before they demolished it. I also lived on 1st Avenue close to The Cathedral of the Madelyn (I think that's what was called. And I attended the Eagle Gate 7th Ward. Sadly I've been inactive from the Church for over 20 plus years. (It's a long and complicated story).

My Granddaughter & I went to The Bins for the first time while in Houston. It was CRAZY especially when they changed out the carts! That’s kinda entertaining! Lol! I spent $47 & I think she spent $37. I did find a hand quilted quilt.
@twinnish Жыл бұрын
I used to go to the bins in Austin,tx. I have heard of bin nightmare stories, and I did not experience any of that. They did have a situation in Houston though where they used to have bins, but they got so rough that they had to shut down the whole thing because it was dangerous. Well that was the explanation given about why we didn’t have bins in Houston. Houston has amazing thrifting. If anybody hasn’t done it there they should. I have found the best stuff at family thrift. I have not been in years, but I miss those days.
@annayres9959 Жыл бұрын
I guess they opened up The Bins again cause my granddaughter & I went last Sunday. Our first time at a Bins. They don’t have them in Amarillo. The cashier did tell us stories of a man getting knocked down & a woman getting hit in the face when a new cart was brought out. We didn’t see any of that. We also heard there are thrift stores in the tunnels in downtown Houston but we must have gone in the wrong place cause we didn’t find anything like that.

The brown stuff is good it’s just how the pan gets seasoned. We just want to get off any residual grease and make it sanitary. We use warm water and baking soda and scrub it. And occasionally lemon juice or vinegar.

I'm loving these videos! I don't always have time to watch the paintapaloozas or the waste not Wednesday lives. I have a question about the white wash technique, do you wipe it off afterwards or just let it drip and soak in? Candlesticks are my favorite things to flip.

@shelbyhambright9543 Жыл бұрын
My biggest queztion is what do you do with items that never sell? How long do you keep them? Do you just keep discounting hoping to get something out of it? Do you end up.donating them? Do you count the time, labor, supplies and cost as a loss on income tax? Do you add that loss into your books to see the real actual net income you earn after losses? Do you keepup with mileage and gasoline , repair and maintenance, and insurance costs as part of you expenses to travel to get things. Do you count a value for loading, creating videos and content, marketing costs unloading, storing, organizing, bookeeping and repairing , painting upcycling labor? Do you include the cost of equipment, tools,space you use to repair and store items and the electrical and water, gas, trash pick up, phone bills, as part of your cost of doing business. Do deduct the storage building or room you keep items in? Do you ever run out of room? All this if deducted from the actual money you get from the sell lowers your profit margin. Jus wondering how you handle and calculate profits and losses.
@JamiRayVintage Жыл бұрын
We have an accountant. Because there are lots of expenses to track and we have a retail store. It all sells eventually. Occasionally we have a sale but not often. We have never had anything over 2 years. We sell as much as we thrift each week. Some of its new stuff, some of its old stuff but we have to keep buying the volume we sell all week to keep our store stocked both online and in our physical resale location.

I super crafty and handy and really like what you do the some of the thrift flips. My question is, Is there a market on like Ebay and Etsy (however I’ve heard they have heavy fees). I know y’all sell through the store and the website, do you feel the videos help with the sales or could someone like me do these kinds of flips? I’m just looking for supplemental income.
@JamiRayVintage Жыл бұрын
It’s taken us a few year to build up our business. Growing on social media has been the best for us. We only sell furniture and paint on Etsy so I can’t say for smaller items.

There are a few things about what Jami and Zeb Do that would be hard for very many to replicate. 1. They live in a unique place where the thrifting is very inexpensive, so they make their money on the front end by getting things really cheap. 2. They live in an area where there is a lot of stuff to pick. 3. They are a part of a religion that makes up the majority of the population where they live, so that’s an automatic potential customer base. 4. They have a very good eye of what to pick, from experience. 5. They have a huge following on social media. 6. They have a special relationship and also good personalities for their videos, plus the skills to make them, along with the energy to do it all(and they’re very consistent with it). Because of all these reasons I think it would be difficult to replicate what they do. However, Jami just started painting furniture and people liked it and asked her to paint some for them. Maybe you could start out small and see if there’s a market in your area? These are just my two cents from having watched them for years.
