People compare this to luffy vs usopp but the big difference is that usopp willingly chose his action where as Sanji didn’t want to do this. Both situations are heart breaking for two different reasons and luffy is smart enough to recognize the difference.

Usopp was right to make that choice, despite his inferiority complex. Luffy simply ignored the needs and desires of a nakama to further his immediate dream, then refused to talk to him rationally and fought him. "Might makes right". In this situation he kinda knows how Sanji truly feels and discards the pride he had before the Usopp fight: willing to let Sanji know how valuable he is as a friend. Luffy has grown as a man and a captain!

@@Kladyos Luffy never refused to talk with Usopp, they actually talked before Usopp decided to left the crew and challange Luffy to a duel So Yes, Luffy did want to talk and no, he wasn't the one who decided to fight Plus, Luffy was actually caring for the crew needs (their ship could sink at any moment) and Usopp was the one ignoring the crew needs and imposing his own desires, so let's stop talking Luffy was the wrong one, they both had points. In fact, the only thing Luffy did wrong was giving the news to Usopp about changing ships with a smile on his face, he should treat the situation better but the result would still be the same anyway.

The prime characteristic of sanji is not to kick. Heck, the only reason he uses only kicks is because he doesn't care if his legs get hurt. No, the prime characteristic of sanji is to be a cook, a cook who will feed anyone who is hungry. No matter if you are young or old, no matter if you are a man or a woman (or even an okama), no matter if you are rich or poor, no matter if you are his best friend or his worst enemy, he will always give all he have to make you the best meal he can do. And that facet of his personality has been extensively explored through that arc, so who cares if he doesn't beat someone up just to contempt some random teenagers who want him to be cool ?

I just love how you understood the whole situation. There are some people who actually take this "fight" in the wrong way and start complaining about everything Sanji did, even knowing by this flashbacks where Sanji's mind was actually set. The way I see it, Sanji was going through a very stressful situation. Luffy, as he always does, understands people without knowing all the details. Sanji was told in previous episodes to not fight back when Niji and the others hit him. Sanji has a lot of emotion and stress built up in him and he can't release it on his brothers for fear of them hurting Zeff. Being the captain, Luffy took Sanji's pain and made it his own. He helped relieve Sanji from his stress by letting him take out all his feelings in a fight. Luffy was helping him cope with his situation and also reminded him of his goals. Sanji can then realize that he doesn't want to get married if it means giving up his dreams, his crew, and his crew's dreams.

Man, this was such a raw reaction, and I loved it and felt pained by it too. As a Sanji fan since I first saw OP, this arc truly shines in showing just how "real" Sanji is as a character. He's not just a character trait of perverted ladies man, but he has so much more and that's what makes him special. Being a comic relief works for him, being a badass works for him, being a compassionate individual works for him, despite his flaws, and ones he knows he has, Oda doesn't simply try to make him overcome it but also learn to make the most of the situation (Enies Lobby). This arc showcases how Sanji has grown and evolved with a family drama and political marriage plot, and it's sad how many will only gauge a character by how cool and badass they are all the time and nothing more, since there is always more to characters than that imo.

I don’t know if You realized but the song at the end is the very first ending song of One Piece... the one that played back in East Blue whenever an episode would end... That was the moment when I cried... because it wasn’t used ever since Alabasta. To me that song is the very essence of what One Piece is all about. This anime and that song is about having dreams and doing everything You can to fulfill them. To hear this song during such a heartbreaking moment when Sanji abandons his dream of finding the All Blue and when Luffy said that without him he can’t become the Pirate King was truly one of the saddest thing I’ve experienced watching One Piece.
