Every decade back then was different. This was the 80s full blast. Nothing was like it then and it will never be repeated again. Just enjoy the memories. The single went to #1 as well as the soundtrack LP. Couldn't ask for more.

I'm from Czech Republic.. Small little country in the middle of Europe.. We don't have too much important people in modern history (just president Vaclav Havel in my opinion).. But Jan Hammer is music treasure of this country.. His music is totally unique... As precious things in life... I wish you from here good health Honzo (Jan) in future .... Hodně zdraví z tvého rodného kraje..

Yeah, Top of the Pops was all about lip-syncing back then, just like many other "live" shows of the day. They didn't want to spend the time to set up a technically complicated live performance just for that short track. They have like a bunch of other artists playing one track each every show so... yeah... pretty fake. But time efficient to set up :). Regardless, Jan had nothing to prove, even at that time he was a talented and accomplished live musician despite what shows like this would have you believe :).
@VJFranzK2 жыл бұрын
He was playing the different zones of the sampler keyboard as he would in a concert or recording session. It's just that we were hearing the pre-recorded track instead! as they did for every act on shows like this.

@ronbo11 Жыл бұрын
It probably was. The Fairlight CMI sampled any sound and you could make it musical by running it through the keyboard to change pitch, etc. Rolling pipes, breaking glass and who knows what was being played musically in 80s songs.

That was during the time when artists like Jan Hammer and Harold Faltermeyer would be booked to play their soundtrack hits "live". What an odd time that was ;). Like... Faltermeyer standing behind a bunch of keyboards performing to a backing track of "Axel F" ;D. Great tunes but how do you make compelling live peformances out of it? Electronic dance music acts of the 90:ies and onwards figured out that they needed loads of laser projectors, smoke, dancers, video walls and all kinds of effects to make this kind of performances interesting to watch but in the 80:ies it was often a bit awkward ;).
@richardeastham10712 жыл бұрын
Jean-Michel Jarre had worked this out by 1979, the year of his first mega concert. Synths aren't made for performance, they're made for the studio. A visual element is needed to complement electronic music.

On Top Of Pops, you notoriously had to mime - But its worse when you've gone to the trouble of setting up a keyboard, computer and you're wearing a keypar and miming to what is clearly a electric guitar... this is just embarrassing - they should have just shown the video.
