It's time for the Play Magnus Champions Challenge on Day 1 of the Oslo Esports Cup.
Jan-Krzysztof Duda, the former World Under 10 Champion and current World No. 15, takes on 10-year-old Magnus Carlsen on the Play Magnus app!
The goal is to last as many moves as possible. But Duda is one of the few to beat Magnus Carlsen in real life and over the board - most recently at the FIDE World Cup 2021. Can he beat the 10-year-old version on the first try?

I've been exclusively practicing against engines set at 2000-2200 elo to practice more refined, positional play, and to grind down won positions. Engines set around this elo do NOT make blunders and will almost ALWAYS correctly defend against checkmating threats. The only way to beat engines at 2k+ elo is to capitalize on innaccuracies or small mistakes they make and continually build up the advantage. I've tested the lastest stockfish on full strength on my computer vs Arasan set at 2120 and 2200 elo on a DGT PI, which uses a Rasberry Pi. The engine and hardware differences are huge, but still, the Arasan plays Stockfish very solidly, and while Stockfish always wins, it's always in a grindy fashion that leads to some endgame with a 1-2 pawn advantage. It will sometimes be a huge landslide victory in certain positions, but for the most part the games are taken to the endgame. I have beaten the engine at 2120 and 2200, but it's because I'm using classical time controls and it's from long positional grinds by accumulating small advantages and grinding the computer down. Even a strong GM having less than 5 minutes to beat weakened engines is pretty crazy considering even weakened engines are almost tactically flawless and requires deep positional grinding, even for something like Stockfish strength, to win.

@@h0witz3r86 Yes, no problem. A lot of people don't realize that an engine's elo is derived from its strength relative to other engines, not humans. Humans are very, very weak tactically compared to even low quality engines running on weak cellphone hardware. However, our strength lies in strategy and playing positionally based off the ideas and plans behind the strategy. I'd say the difference in tactical ability is so large that even an engine at 2k- 2.2k elo is on par with Super GMs in terms of tactics, until the occasional inaccuracies and minor mistakes, which they don't give it to you easily and requires you to grind them down to create such opportunities. In a short game, it will almost always be in the engine's favor since it's just about tactics. There was a guy, a long time ago, that openly admitted he cheated on Chess.com to achieve his rating of 2800+ by using a weak, unheard of engine with a rating of 2400ish relative to other engines. He had many strong GM scalps. And the games that he lost, he purposefully blundered to avoid suspicion. This essentially means he could've been rated a lot higher! Since the engine wasn't one of the standard ones Chess.com used, he was able to avoid detection and his moves weren't top Stockfish lines. A lot of people have this misconception that a 2800 engine elo means it's the same strength as its human counterpart, but that couldn't be further from the truth.
@MonkeyDIvan
@MonkeyDIvan 2 жыл бұрын
@@heraldarnold437 I mean if an engine is set to play at 2100-200 strength, it's designed to play like an actual player of that strength. A human with a rating of 2200 is the same as an engine with a rating of 2200. Super GMs beat players like these 99 out of 100 times (slighthly exaggerating but you understand my point). What I'm trying to get at is that you're making it seem like it's impressive because it's an engine, and what I'm saying is that it's irrelevant whether it is or not; what matters is the ELO. Duda could've faced an actual opponent with the same playing strength as the 10-year old Magnus app and the game would've been about the same; win some, lose some. This time he lost, but let them have a first to 10 match and I'd bet my money on Duda. That's how ELO works. I beat an engine 500 Elo higher than me (a few times too), Eric Rosen has beaten Magnus and Nakamura before despite him being an IM. Things like these happen. If I play the engine 10 times I may win 1 or 2 and the engine will win the others. Duda just happened to lose this match, but let him play the engine a few more times and see who comes out on top.

@@MonkeyDIvan I'm rated 2143, and from my personal experience, an Engine at 2143 plays completely differently. I've played hundreds of games between players and multiple different types of Engines set at 2000-2300 elo. I don't want to get into too much detail because I've already explained it well enough in previous comments, but one major difference is computers play consistently at the level you set it and at a certain elo range never commit blatant blunders-- unlike humans where even Super GMs can occasionally blunder mate in 1s and their Queens. Magnus Carlsen at age 10 was between the elo of 1600-2000. Far weaker than a Super GM, yet in all these videos it systematically destroys these Elite Gms with perfect tactical play with such quick time controls. Where are you getting this information about "it's designed to play like an actual player of that strength". I'm a bit confused as to where these Engine's get initially rated? Is there some hidden rated tournaments between that every Engine created plays tons of games between human players of all ranges without us knowing? I'm also a software engineer, where can you point me in the algorithms where it specifically tailors itself against humans of a specfic elo? I've also studied games of humans within the 2000-2200 elo ranges in Chessbase, not only from my own games, and I can 100% say there is a huge difference.

It's actually not difficult to get a good position against Magnus 10, even as an intermediate player, but once you reach the endgame, the computer will usually find a way to defend, or you will blunder and lose.
