We hear "Vermeer" - and think: the "Girl with the Pearl Ears". But of course Vermeer's work is not limited to this one painting; rather, not only for connoisseurs of Dutch painting, he is a keenly observant genre painter who, with an alert eye and clear vision, observes the people around him, alone and in company, in their habitat, the premises of everyday life, capturing their actions and interactions.
Jan Vermeer's paintings have a special effect on us - we do not look at them, do not let our gaze wander over the picture surface, rather we immerse ourselves in them, enter the space, are in the rooms, in and with the scene presented to us and become absorbed in it. This is one of the reasons why Vermeer's paintings have a perceptual-psychological pull that we find difficult to escape, especially as we as viewers are repeatedly confronted with the immediate gaze of one of the figures - as in the painting "The Girl with the Wine Glass".
