NOTE: This video was for a dive on JUNE 18, 2021, NOT JANUARY. I'll get that fixed in the intro when I want to go through the hassle of re-uploading.
This was a great scuba dive on the Atlas Tanker and the Caribsea. The Atlas was sailing alone from Houston, Texas to Seawarren, New Jersey loaded with 83,00 barrels of gasoline off the coast of NC on April 9, 1042, when the German submarine U-552 hit it with two torpedoes. It now sits in 125 feet of water approximately 23 miles east/southeast of the Beaufort NC inlet.
The Caribsea was sailing off the NC coast carrying a load of manganese ore from Santiago, Cuba to Norfolk, VA. At approximately 2 am on March 11, 1942, she was struck by two torpedoes from the German submarine U-158. The ship sunk in less than 3 minutes. The crew was unable to launch the ship's lifeboats and jumped overboard. Only 7 of the 28 member crew managed to cling to wreckage and survive the 10 hours in the water before they were picked up by the freighter SS Norlindo. The Caribsea now lies in 85 feet of water about 10 miles east of Cape Lookout Shoals.
Jana, Jerry, and I dove these two wrecks on June 18, 2021, and had a great dive! I hope you enjoy the video!
