This was an interesting show today. I have to admit it made me look at myself and my situation differently. I was with my finance, a few months prior to the wedding, I found out he cheat. That day I kicked him out, called off our already paid for wedding. And then boom 2 hours later I found out I was pregnant. But I wouldn’t go back because he cheated. It was interesting to see others take on the situation and how they handled it.

The profound lesson Ru is trying to open up for everyone is that you cannot resolved your own insecurities by projecting them onto another person as a form of romantic construct. Rather the people that you meet and have the opportunity to spend time with are here to put a mirror for you to work through those insecurities.

I had no idea who any of these guests were/are as I don't watch tons of TV but I did google all of them after since the topic is interesting. That Tarek man really seems like his is strong and trying very hard to get focused and learn from his marriage ending. Seems like he is on the right path to self awareness and learning. Hope he finds new love when he is ready. That other couple may god bless them as they grown from her husbands strayed ways. I do hope they continue w/ counseling and can weather the storm.

Very much enjoyed the topics. I thought it was nice to bring in the "open" / different kinds of relationships aspect too. As someone who is in an open relationship for 5 years and getting married to my partner next year, I feel like it's often misunderstood. It's not "cheating" when you have a mutual agreement to see other people to have sex. My partner and I, for example, have an open agreement because we're very compatible as people, but our bedroom preferences are only 50% compatible at best. We do have sex regularly, but there is a need to "top up" the other half so as to not become frustrated sexually. As Ru was saying, same sex couples, particularly male couples, seem more willingly to acknowledge these sort of things, as evidenced by the fact that so many gay couples do practice some form of an open relationship. Now don't get me wrong, I have no problem with monogamy and I think it's great if you're a person for whom monogamy works. However, I believe that, as a society, we need to be more open to alternative solutions, such as open relationships, and look at them not as some sort of kink but as a valid form of how relationships express themselves in our modern world. And we certainly do not talk about this topic enough in the public forum.

I love that RuPaul is so respectful and he seems to truly care and connect with his guests. But I felt really uncomfortable with his views on gender, especially saying stuff like "are you a sex addict or just an average man?", "now we'll turn you into a real woman". I hope he educates himself on gender studies, and how this sort of statements are used to continue oppressing both men and women. "Men are sex addicts, if you don't put out hell leave you... Men are sex addicts, if you dress like that you'll end up raped... You're not woman enough if you don't look feminine". For a person that is in a key position to analyze gender inequality, his views on identity are pretty mid-1900s. I know he's not a brute, you don't become the most successful drag queen being closed minded, but I hope he can open up to a deeper analysis of what genders mean in today's world.
@44cosmonaut38
@44cosmonaut38 5 жыл бұрын
EmChava Nice analysis but I think that is solely your interpretation and perception about what he said. The difference between a male sex drive and female is real (of course not all men/women are the same) it is easily reflected in gay relationships vs hetero relationships vs lesbian relationships. Open relationships are much more common in gay relationships than the other too. Men often blame their infidelity to "sex addiction" when that is not the case for all of them. What Ru is saying is completely realistic. Ru would NEVER and has NEVER say or even imply or try to send the message of the examples you mentioned "if you dress like this you deserve to be raped" because as a matter of fact, on his podcast, he has criticized plenty of times the hypocrisy of the concept of femininity, in his words "heterosexual men are afraid of femininity they can't control (examples he has used are how they feel threatened by strong femenine figures in politics, independent women who pursue careers, women's reproductive rights movement, gay men who are effeminate, etc) women should not be afraid of using their femininity to empower themselves" Notice that when he says that he does not refer to clothing or makeup or whatever superficial thing, but the actual power of femininity, when they are able to make decisions and choose what they want to do with their bodies. In this case that woman was looking for a makeover, she contacted him especifically for that, she clearly was not happy and wanted a change. If that is the woman's perception of womanhood and the power of femininity and if it's her way to channel her feminine side, why would Ru not encourage that? It was her choice. The way you word a phrase to send a message does not make it problematic at all, it's YOUR interpretation of things that want to make it problematic. Read the context, because it was a very specific one, there was nothing mentioned about gender identity, gender opression, etc. This was a woman simply looking for help to feel happier. Look at how confident and strong she looked after her makeover, her interpretation of that experience was clearly different from yours, and that's OK. Maybe that is the beginning of her empowerment as a woman. Everyone's journey is different. Context MATTERS.
