Don't know why JL was so well made-up in this version. I saw the revival early in the run (right after it moved to Studio 54 - with Mary Mc Cormick). This happens in the play right after Sally has an abortion. She's messed up - emotionally and visually - she represents the chaos in Berlin. She should be on the verge of a breakdown when she's singing this. N. Richardson did it very well.
@wonderlasting5 жыл бұрын
I agree. When I saw a tour production in Arizona, the actress totally nailed it, with tears running down her mascara stained cheeks, and choking up, yet being forced to smile and sing.
@johndalton31802 жыл бұрын
The original concept is Sally decides to have the abortion while singing the song. Leeves plays that. I've heard that Jane Horrocks Hitlarian version represented Sally WHILE getting the abortion- and it makes sense if you watch it. It seems like Sam Mendes gave the actresses a ton of leeway on how to play it.

+James N. O'Sullivan (The Nabster) Actually, I had the honor and pleasure of performing with Jane Leeves in this revival of CABARET at Studio54, and she was already quite established, to say the least in Frasier as Daphne Moon, or as you so graciously wrote "in physical therapy".

I loved this. I must be living in a cave, truly. I had NO idea that both Jane Leeves and actor James Stamos sp? were in this and that they could sing. I've seen all the clips available of them both thus far in Cabaret and just wish I could have seen the production in person.

Don't forget that JL was trained as and was a dancer first, and comes from the theater, specifically musical theater...so, as a "triple-threat," singing would be part of her arsenal, even if her strongest suit was dancing.

And therein lies the problem. Sally Bowles is supposed to mediocre at best, and likely not good at all. Which is why she's working in a nightclub in Berlin that is second rate at best, on the eve of Germany turning to fascism. For a true representation of how the character is portrayed in the source material, check out Jane Horrocks.

I'm doing this song for my upcoming audition. I thought about Don't Cry For Me Argentina, but I feel like I'd be able to hit the notes better in this song. Plus, it's more upbeat. Btw, what year was this from?
@christophercobb2492 жыл бұрын
It's actually not supposed to be upbeat. At all. She just had an abortion (in 1930s Germany, so probably physically traumatic to her) and Nazism is taking over. She's supposed to have a psychotic break in this song. It's ugly and gritty and traumatic.

@ddjmfan PS: When you say that I am "definitely in the minority," is that taking into consideration the number of people that actually bothered to look Jane Leeves up after 'Frasier' versus the number of people who didn't? If you're talking only about Jane Leeves' personal fan base, then I would have to agree with you. Otherwise, 'no', as is obvious from lack of people who even know who she is. If she had actual talent, she'd be more widely recognized rather than just as "Daphne" from 'Frasier.'
@KoH471113 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, but am I, truly, the only person here who thinks that, not only is her voice terrible, but, if you HADN'T seen her from 'Frasier,' wouldn't care at all for her, as a performer? I do feel alone, so feel free to thumb me down.... but my god, she has little, to no, real talent. I, for one, can't stand her hitting that god-awful "note" once more.
@kaylinm83712 жыл бұрын
phenomenal voice but she’s not rly acting through the song
@KoH471113 жыл бұрын
Well, the fact that you made no mention as to that horribly sounding "note" on the final syllable of "Cab-a-ret" should automatically void your entire opinion to me, but I'm slightly astounded that you didn't even bother recognizing it, in the first place. Whether the novelty of "Daphne" has worn off on you, I'm not sure, but I do know what is good singing and what is not. And that, sir, is far from what anyone would consider to be "good singing."
