I had the same experience listening to nothing shocking for the first time. I still love that album and that music. I missed the show that happened about that time and that'll always be a bit of a regret. A friend had a VHS tape of them. From what I remember, there is a scene where they're lighting off fireworks in a bedroom. To be honest, I don't remember the rest of it. I don't know if that's popularly available or not. Seemed like a james addiction style home movie. Thanks for reviving those memories.

I used to say that if my house was in fire and I could only grab a handful of things on my way out my Nothings Shocking tape/CD would def be one of them! It was kind of a slower burn for me tho…Perry was so avant garde it took a couple listens. It was a major departure from poison, motley crew and winger. And without the internet there was an element of danger and mystery with them.

I was at that Milwaukee show too! It was so amazing, but we hit a deer on the drive home to Madison and it kinda killed the vibe of the night. Saw original Jane’s three times. Saw reformed Jane’s once (and got to go backstage and watch a three song warmup).

@@Thedarkstuff Crazy that you were at that show as well. Sorry about the drive home though. That would dampen the mood for sure

Nothing Shocking came out just before my 12th birthday. I found out about them from Canadian Much Music playing their video for Mountain Song.

I had tickets for the Chicago show about a week after the scuffle in Boston it would of been my first time seeing them. Welp I was pretty ticked by it all. For me working at a radio station that flipped to Atl-Rock in early 90s they were played a lot. I have a few CDs I would see Porno For Pyros twice but no luck seeing Jane’s Addiction.

Ehh...what a bummer. Porno could be really good live too.

I've always been more of a "hits" type fan of Jane's Addiction. I do remember my introduction to them though. I was also a Rolling Stone subscriber, but I would also pick up Spin occasionally, and I believe I had grabbed an issue at some point in my high school years which featured a cover story on the band. I remember the story led off describing a show where Perry Farrell had stripped down on stage during the performance. My college roommate was a big fan of the band though, so that was a way for me to get some exposure to their music beyond the videos I caught on MTV. I don't remember anything off of "Strays" outside of the single 'Just Because'. For some reason, I actually did like that song. I don't know that I would compare it to their prime-era material, but I thought that was a pretty catchy rock song from that era. I think part of the reason I never really became a bigger fan is because I never really liked Perry Farrell. I came around to him a bit over time, and now it seems maybe my initial impressions of him were correct. Hope he gets help for whatever he is going through, but, I've also read some allegations about his behavior towards women that weren't particularly flattering. I thought it was really strange that he re-started Porno For Pyros last year, and it was reported they were recording new music and set to tour. Next thing I hear, the recordings were coming out as an EP, and the tour supporting that new music was also a farewell tour. I think he had gotten Jane's Addiction back together before the Pyros reunion, so it has been a really messy series of events these past few years. Again, I hope he does get help.

It does seem like a really chaotic couple of years with fits and starts for both Porno and Jane's. Who knows what's going on. I think there was definitely a benefit to getting into Jane's and Perry back when information was scarce and the music had to do the talking. He definitely seems to have his demons.

Cool to hear your stories of this band., I tried, but they never connected.

My first introduction to Jane’s Addiction was seeing the Being Caught Stealing video on MTV. I surely liked it but didn’t dig into their discography at that moment. Some years later, during my study years, i played in a band and the saxophone player had a pretty eclectic music taste. He introduced me to John Coltrane, Funkadelic and Dead Moon, amongst others. But also Jane’s Addiction records, which i’ve played over and over ever since. Then i saw Jane’s Addiction live at the Paradiso in Amsterdam, a wild and magnificent concert. Dave Navarro broke two ribs that evening when he fell from a monitor off stage, but kept playing even after. Great band, i love their early and their later albums equally, as well as the side projects (P4P, Satellite Party, Deconstruction, Dave & Eric’s solo albums). I surely hope they will recover from whatever happened on stage recently, at least until they release their new album.

Cool story. I love that John Coltrane and Funkadelic were introduced to you at the same time. Dead Moon...I need to check them out. After all of this, if they do manage to get their act together it would be something to see.

Never liked them... Especially their later, craptastic tune, "Been Caught Stealing" 🤮👎
@lostmixtapes2 ай бұрын
@@Eric_Von_Yesselstyn That’s a huge outlier for them. It’s fun, but it’s hardly essential and provides no clue to the real magic of the band. Kind of like judging R.E.M. by Shiny Happy People. But I get it if you just don’t like them.
