Thirty years ago, aliens arrive on Earth -- not to conquer or give aid, but -- to find refuge from their dying planet. Separated from humans in a South African area called District 9, the aliens are managed by Multi-National United, which is unconcerned with the aliens' welfare but will do anything to master their advanced technology. When a company field agent (Sharlto Copley) contracts a mysterious virus that begins to alter his DNA, there is only one place he can hide: District 9.

Sharlto Copley is such a versatile actor. Aside from District 9, he's acted as a robot Chappie, a mercenary in Elysium and A-Team, a mob lord in Oldboy, etc.

The director said that Christopher likely would come back - but that his priority might not be Wikus at that point. Three years is a long time to lose affection for a human he knew for a few days, and a long time to think about the bodies of his loved ones.

The sequel to Blade Runner there are some KZbin shorts that you kinda have to watch. There’s three of them they’re not very long one is animated and the other two have the actors from the movie, it fill you in on what’s happened in between the two movies. The war, the brownout and Morton. It’s not really a casual viewing movie. You kinda have to know some of the physics to how the world works. Also, the lady eating the pill on the billboard in the first Blade Runner that’s birth control and it helps You understand the world in the second movie. None of those are spoilers. It’s just world building.

This movie could not take place in the US because Wickus would have been shot dead in the first 30 minutes. The maker of this film is still trying to figure out a sequel for this movie because of the cult following District 9 has!
@BTT16

I wish Neil Blomkamp had the chance to make District 10, but after the financial flop of "Chappie", he's pretty much been ostracized from Hollywood. He directed the Gran Turismo racing movie based on the video game, which I heard was pretty good, but it went fairly unnoticed and he also runs Oats Studios where he leads teams of visual FX Artists and makes short films similar in tone to District 9. He and his team of Artists did Concept Art work on a possible sequel to Aliens, but it fell through. The way he designs technology is awesome. Everything looks practical yet still futuristic. The creator was directed by Gareth Edwards who directed Rogue One

Dig most of the reaction, but the cringing and mispronouncing of Wikus, got old fast. Remember when Django had to keep telling people that the D is silent? Plus, you guys kept calling the aliens, prawns. That's like using the n word for describing black people. You didn't seem to care that it was a derogatory term. You also seemed to show empathy towards the aliens, so calling them prawns, over and over, seemed weird to me.

One of my all-time favorite movies, mostly because I think it's realistic to how we really would treat aliens from another planet. I mean, we treat human refugees this exact same way. I like to believe there are aliens out there, the universe is just too immense for us to be alone, but if they are smart, they'll stay far, far away from us, until we learn to treat each other so, so much better. We are a dangerous species to anything we see as different or "less than".

I love the efficiency of this film. So well made! Neill Blomkamp also directed "Elysium" (2013), starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley. Copley played the mild middle-management functionary in "District 9" who gets transformed into a 'prawn' alien, but plays a very different character as the mercenary villain in "Elysium", another great film. Highly recommended.

One of the strongest theories about Christopher’s intelligence is his species comes in intelligent “queens” and dull “worker bees”. Christopher was likely a leader on the ship and either there was a violent mutiny that killed the leaders (this is the strongest to me) or an illness that took out the small number of leaders along with many workers. The mutiny makes sense only in that Christopher seems to be hiding his intellect from his people save for one loyal follower - but he might also know he doesn’t have the means to control them.
@mollybmedia
@mollybmedia 5 ай бұрын
More evidence for mutiny is Christopher escaping from the ship when they landed in the escape pod. He may have been escaping the remaining workers, who began to starve up there until the ship was cracked open.

They're color coded. Smart ones are green, less smart are red, yellow or black. Only Wikus (when he turns) and Christopher (and Chris's son) are green. I don't think there was a mutiny since no rebellious prawns are in control when the ship lands on Earth, and I don't think Christopher was upper leadership, maybe he was a pilot or an engineer aboard the ship? He's not hiding his intellect from the other prawns, they're not smart enough to care about the fact that he is smart, he is hiding his intellect from the hairless apes that have a penchant for murder and oppression.

It is pronounced 'vikus', the 'w' is a 'v' in many languages including German, Dutch and the English from Johannesburg, remember the Dutch colonized South Africa, thats where that pronunciation is coming from. That bothered me a little bit, the character pronounced his own name as 'vikus' why do you think he would be saying his name wrong? As an immigrant that suffers from people correcting my name it struck a chord. Love your channel, don't get me wrong, but keep that in mind. Take care.

It's pronounced "Vikus", pronouncing it Wikus using your own English pronunciations is wrong, and a little rude. It's no different than someone pronouncing Jane as "Yane" because J's in their language are pronounced differently. But YOUR NAME is "Jane" not "Yane", so they would be wrong.

Neil Blomkamp has been having a rough go with his movies not being well received over the years, mostly Elysium and Chappie. He was supposed to do an Alien movie with Sigourney Weaver but it got scrapped because his movies kept bombing. There's just one little nuance. Christopher Johnson promised to return in three Earth years? Judging by the star map at the end, the Prawns' home planet is in another galaxy. If their ship has almost infinite energy reserves, they just need to fly at a constant acceleration to the midway point, and then at a constant deceleration, and then the journey to the nearest galaxy could take about 20 years in terms of ship time. Only, during their jorney, several million years would pass on Earth... As you can realize, there would be no point in returning to Earth. To fly faster, and even more so - to return in 3 years according to the Earth's chronology, it is necessary to fly faster than the speed of light, which, by the way, is equivalent to time travel to the past, and this is impossible, because to accelerate even one single atom of matter to the speed of light will require more energy than there is in the entire Universe. Not to mention exceeding the speed of light. So it appears to be impossible squared. Even assuming their ship is capable of creating the infamous hole in space-time, a passable Einstein-Rosen bridge, or folding the space-time continuum using warp technology, it would still be traveling back in time. And that, is even more dreadful. Such a possibility, if it existed, would inevitably lead to the appearance of unsolvable cause-and-effect paradoxes, and violation of the principle of the unity of the Universe history, stratification of our reality and turning it into a mess of unpredictable events. It would be like in Carroll's "Through the Looking Glass" cakes could be destributed first, and cut afterwards... In general, if the travel of material bodies into the past were possible, our Universe could not exist in the form in which we observe it. That aside, the rest of the movie is very strong.)) One of my favorites.
