I love this song. I feel like some of the criticisms are so ridiculous. People hear a hip hop beat and "sexual" lyrics and automatically want to bring out the pitchforks and torches. If you listen to the lyrics, the song is about individuality and not putting women into boxes. This has been one of her main messages all along. She has not let go of her morals. She has not sold out. It's the same message wrapped in a fun (and a bit more marketable) package. I feel like some of the critics who are "disappointed" in Janelle are only putting her into one more box. You expect her to be asexual, revolutionary, and wholesome all the time. You're holding her to an unfair high standard and restricting her from growing as an artist.

I can't speak for others, but my criticism is more about the artistic direction of this than anything else. I'm not really concerned about the sexual angle. I was always interested in her music because it was unique, but if she is just going to start peddling the same banal dross that can be heard on the radio, then you'll forgive my indifference.

I feel like she underplayed how great this song was. Her message is clear as DAY if you honestly understand her morals, reason, and individuality. Omg people calm down. This JM's way of getting mainstream appeal. It's not a deadly sin. As a fan I know she will keep true to making good music for her fans but as a business woman she must still be marketable. Eephus is a way for mainstream fans to do their homework and check out her earlier work. Once they get a sense of her true sound, then they will be prepared for what's to come. Funk music and horns are coming back to mainstream so this is exciting. Jane will revolionize it with the addition of strings like she did in Archandroid. Hopefully the next full length will be able to balance out mainstream appeal with her sound. As a fan I want good music, but I also want her to be recognized by many.

I don't believe she is changing(not for the worst at least). It would take a lot more than this one jam to come to the conclusion that she is changing. I see this as opening a door for her new artists... that she is moreso adapting to the new direction(s) of her artists as a leader. Any good leader follows as well as leads. She has been doing this for a while now, so for her to create this "get in shape" kind of track is a smooth move right now. I guess to understand her comfort in this track is to also have knowledge of the mindset that pertains to YOGA. Bottom line: I'm loving this song.

The best thing about Music is that it's filled with SO MANY possibilities! And a REALLY good musician can be diverse and play with different styles. Meaning that this shows the kinds of styles that Janelle can do and that restricting her to one kind of music is not only unfair, but it's also holding her back as an artist. Let her do what she wants. If Gaga can go from singing pop to singing Jazz, then Janelle can do this.
