Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I been flippin’ through my timeline
Tryna’ get my mind right
My city cryin’ out
I got to cool down
But I’m under pressure
Cookin with my crisco
Look at where my fists go
A renegade when I’m in a rage
I got to cool down
But I’m under pressure
[Pre-Chorus]
I keep my hands dirty
My mind clean
Got a new agenda
With a new dream
I’m kickin out the old regime
Liberation, Elevation, Education
America
You a lie
But the whole word bout to testify
I said the whole word bout to touch the fire
And the tables bout to
T-T-T-Tables bout to
[Chorus]
Turn!
Turn!
Turn!
Ain’t no stoppin til it -
Turn!
Turn!
Turn!
Know it’s time for it to -
Turn!
Turn!
Turn!
We can’t wait for it to
Turn
Turn
Yeah the table bout to turn
[Verse 2]
It’s a boomerang boomin back
You laid an egg now it’s bout to hatch
Your gas lightin bout to meet your match
You f*ck up the kitchen
Then you should do the dishes
Burnin down plantations
This ain’t parkin I don’t need no validation
I light sage when I’m in a rage
I don’t need permission
I got my intuition
[Pre-chorus]
Hands dirty
Mind clean
A different vision
With a new dream
We kickin out the old regime
Liberation, Elevation, Education
I said America
Yous a lie
But the whole word bout to testify
I said the whole word bout to testify
We gon watch the table
Now we gon watch the table
[Chorus]
Turn!
Turn!
Turn!
That’s right
Turn!
Turn!
Turn!
We got to -
Turn!
Turn!
Turn!
Waited too long you gotta -
Turn!
Just Turn!
Just Turn!
We see it all now!
Turn!
Said the tables bout to turn!
Turn!
(outro)
Tables Turn!
Tables Turn!
Tables Turn!
Tables Turn!

@ She isn't spreading a rumour. She is calling out the new postmaster general and Trump for attempting to suppress mail-in voters by making USPS less accessible/capable to operate. Trump is the one that stated there would be fraud with mail-in ballots, attempting to create distrust with the mail-in ballot process. USPS is not a typical business-- it is a public service with gov't agency. Which is why he's able to threaten to defund it and appoint minions to take control.

I interpreted it as the reemergance of the knowledge/treasure that was intentionally buried during the Middle Passage. Regardless of how often the system tried to deny its existence we have always known we are more. Now its time to demand access/reclaim/reconnect with our history, divinity, culture, not just for us, but for the world. Balance needs to be restored. As a practioner of an ATR (Lucumi) I also see this as referencing Olokun. Could be wrong but just my two cents.

Janelle can bring people to life like no other. Her music is complex, her visuals choices are sophisticated and unequivocal about her politics, and her song writing totally slaps. She's the freedom fighter we need, and I'm personally convinced that her friendship with Solange Knowles helped influence both Solange and Beyonce Knowles to include more conscious lyrics and imagery in their art as well!

"An artist’s duty, as far as I’m concerned, is to reflect the times. I think that is true of painters, sculptors, poets, musicians. As far as I’m concerned, it’s their choice, but I choose to reflect the times and situations in which I find myself. That, to me, is my duty. And at this crucial time in our lives, when everything is so desperate, when everyday is a matter of survival, I don’t think you can help but be involved. Young people, black and white, know this. That’s why they’re so involved in politics. We will shape and mold this country or it will not be molded and shaped at all anymore. So I don’t think you have a choice. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times? That to me is the definition of an artist." ~ Nina Simone

@@gigipeedee The reason why that is significant, Paddy. There was a study done in the past before you were born that showed black children choosing white dolls over black dolls, as if white skin was better than their own. If you had grown up in when television only showed caucasian people on television back in the 50's and 60's maybe you would understand!!! Do your research!🤔

First off, this song is my go-to anthem any time I'm feeling enraged and/or depressed around the fact that America is (literally and figuratively) on fire... But also... Can we please take a moment to celebrate Janelle Monae's range and versatility as an artist? The fact that she can go from "Tightrope" to "Yoga" to THIS is nothing short of AMAZING!
