Elphaba had the love and care she deserved from her nanny, Dulcibear hence why she had empathy, love for and desire to protect all creatures in Oz, especially seeing them being mistreated and looked down upon just as she was.

It was her “father” that should be ashamed. Though I get a feeling he lowkey suspects Elphaba isn’t his and that plays a factor. Elphaba’s mom probably was in shock, in the broadway musical she actually asks what’s wrong and reaches for Elphaba. They probably removed it in the movie to build early Elphaba’s connection to animals. And Elphaba’s mom does pass away giving birth to Nessarose.

There is no doubt that wickedness was thrust upon her. Glinda knows better but she rather be loved by the people than share the truth. Elphaba is right all along. "No good deed, goes unpunished"

I think people thought she was wicked because in her past madine Marrible whatever her name was. She said “Wicked Witch” in a microphone which was probably the reason why people was happy she was dead because they thought she was wicked.
