"Janesville In Reelife" - 1940 Color Footage of Janesville, WI

Rare color footage shot of Janesville, Wisconsin in 1940 by Reelife Productions, including scenes from inside the General Motors plant and footage of the "Janesville 99" prior to their deployment overseas. This film was discovered in 2006 and had sound and narration added. Production by David Haldiman, text written and narrated by Jim Lyke. Copyright 2006 by the Rock County Historical Society.

My best friend’s mom grew up in Janesville at this time. She would have been 10 in 1940. Her father was on the Janesville police department.

Resident since 1963, some of those giant windows from the old Gazette building were recovered and built into our hunting cabin in Adams County. Dad worked on the destruction crew, and brought home artifacts like print plates and Linotype, too. I stood in line at the Jeffris for a Midnight Matinee, on a summer 1973 Saturday, with my 61 yo Gramma, who paid for the tickets to see Jimi Hendrix at Altamont.

Thanks for the comment. I'm glad some things from the old Gazette building were salvaged. From what employees told me, it sounds like a lot of history got put out to the curb for the garbage man - like historic WCLO recordings and equipment, and quite possibly, the master copy of this film. We believe this reel is actually the outtakes.
