Although this is a man's song and an old man's song at that, one cannot fault this wonderful performance by the best Mezzo-Soprano England has ever produced.

Yes , I know what you mean . I think the Biblical aspect of the text - song of Simeon is used as a way of expressing a universal spiritual experience - just like when folks sing the Nunc dimittis at a serice of Evensong. In that sense the gender of the singer really doesn't matter to me. There is also a high voice version of Ich Habe Genug sung by Sopranos and Tenors and sometimes recorded. I was fortunate to hear Dame Janet sing twice in the opera house - a very special experience and always great identification with the text and character.

I have been listening to this recording since 1973 ( the St. Martin in the Fields recording, conducted by Yehudi Menuhin as I recall). It was one of 5 or 6 records I brought with me everywhere at that time.. I actually used it to test speakers when shopping at a very high end stereo store In NYC for my parents. The salesman was blown away. The intensity, fullness, depth and range of her voice truly put the best speakers of that time to the test. It is transcendent. Her entire being is given over to this performance.

This is my all-time favourite Bach cantata, and a good performance from Dame Janet Baker and Yehudi Menuhin conducting the Bath Festival Orchestra and originally released in 1967 [the year I was born] on vinyl for EMI/HMV and the record catalogue number is ASD/ALP 2302,in which I`ve got the original vinyl and still brings me back memories and I`ve been a Bach fan at the age of 9, and his music is still fabulous for me.

A voice beyond compare and a piece of Bach beyond even his finest work.

Only a few skilled singers make me cry. She's one of them. Her voice is like the fall wind, making leaves fly around me.

Dame Janet's singing has borne me up and kept me semi sane for about 50 years since I first heard her Didon with Scottish Opera!

First heard it in the summer of 1966 in Tehran. Bought the 33 RPM record. Still have it on iPOd. My favorite Bach. In fact it was my introduction to Bach. Still listen to it regularly. I have included it in the music that should one day be played at my wake! Dame Janet's best work.

Zia Ahari THE piece that I will have above all at my memorial (if there is one!) is Kathleen Ferrier singing “Erbarme dich” from the St Matthew Passion.

The very best recording of this cantata. It's something to do with that almost imperceptible note of fragility in the voice.

I've heard many voices in "Schlummert ein..." - no one comes even close to Janet Baker. Depth, lyrical timbre, control, vision and passion are just mystical.

I must admit I prefer this done by a bass, but regardless, as you say, Dame Baker is absolutely sui generis: a class by herself alone. Small wonder Bach preferred the alto (of course having a dear alto wife could have had no influence ;)). And it surely didn't hurt having the great Menuhin conduct. I will NEVER be able to fathom how one man could pour forth such a torrential flood of great text & music, further unneeded proof of God's miraculous bestowments for those with eyes to see/ears to hear..
