In the music video Janet Jackson portrays a lounge singer during the time of apartheid in South Africa. The video is inspired by a blend of 1960s and 1970s South African culture, as evidenced by the Drum magazine, Lion beer, and "slegs Blacks" signs that were all over the country. These signs indicate that Black people were not allowed to use or enter certain areas. The dressing style of the people in the video was inspired by the work of Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keita, two photographers from Mali. The video is a powerful statement against racism and discrimination. It shows that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and beauty. It also celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Black people.

That’s because the video directly references “real” photos from DRUM magazine (a South African publication noted chiefly for its early 1950s and 1960s reportage of township life under apartheid). It was stylised and directed as such. Therefore taking on a very “photogenic” or “painting esque” look (as you say). Madonna used to do the same in some of her videos (she used the same director Mark Romanek). What makes this a masterpiece, in my opinion, is it’s blatant celebration of black culture (be it South African or otherwise), it’s lack of whitewashing or watering down of black pride , and it’s display of “real” love for beauty within black community (not conventual at all in American terms). That might not sound like much in 2020 post Beyoncé, Lauren Hill, (and Rihanna to an extent). But at the time it had never been done on mainstream US media, let alone on MTV (so white). If you like how this video looks, try and get your hands on some old copies of DRUM magazine.

I don't think people understand how culturally significant this video is. This is black pride. How wonderful. The only other singer having that sort of pride was Nina Simone, and she paid the price for that. The rest of the African American singers are too worried about their careers to produce such a video. That includes Beyonce of course. Janet was and is the real deal.

@clansome
@clansome Жыл бұрын
@@cocoafemme47 Yup nothing. However I just don't care for music which has such deep sampling. Also did a bit of digging on the song as it didn't cross my radar in 1997, but Janet Jackson was sued by Des'ree who thought the song was very similar to her own song "Feel So High" from her 1992 album Mind Adventures. In July 1998, she was awarded an out-of-court settlement granting her 25 per cent of the publishing royalties from the song; around £2 million. Des'ree later said she wanted Jackson to recognize that she had "borrowed" from her work and not given her credit. So a borrowed tune cut with readily distinguished sample gets a thumbs down from me. Sorry but that's my opinion. Video is great mind.

Actually, although she may be depicting South Africa (and its Apartheid history) in this video, it isn't much different from what was it like in America before the civil rights movement in the 60's...and had she depicted the american racism reality that still persists up until now (police black lives' killings/"black lives matter" is just an example), she would have been banned immediately from all major media channels in the US and her career then (in 1997) seriously dammaged...and I want to give her all the props for depicting "BLACKNESS" as a beautiful and natural thing (she's not even wearing any make up in here)...I personally hate the "african american" label, as it is less correct/accurate than simply "black american"...because many black americans aren't simply descendants solely from "african blood"...and this was me (an european white dude) saying it, for that matter...

@@SmartRobot-wc2fb ARE YOU REALLY A "EUROPEAN WHITE DUDE"??? If you are why on earth would you worry yourself about black people if they are called Black Americans or African-Americans??? To me you sound like a black person who doesn't like to be associated with Africans. There are black people who claim to be proud of their blackness but don't wanna be associated with Africans or Africanness. They HATE everything about Africans. Maybe it's because of all the negative news they watch on tv about Africa and it's people. You should feel ashamed of yourself for having so much hatred. Educate yourself and DON'T believe everything you read or see on tv on news channels.
