That's actually sad because where are the black kangs and their help when it comes to civil rights, empowerment and black excellence or are black women expected to carry everyone on their shoulders (as usual) within their community.

My mother, a Guyanese, moved to Canada in 1968, When I was a very young child in the 70s my mother, a registered nurse (and daughter and sister of registered nurses), she demanded that I be tested for sickle cell anemia. Apparently it was something that was not done in Toronto and it may be that I was the first to be tested for it. Luckily I did not have it. Thank you Dame Elizabeth for all your hard work. It is my hope that your efforts are spread throughout the African Diaspora.

I lost my close friend Kwame to sickle cell when he was just 17 years old. It was the 80s and back then there was such a stigma about it here in Ghana that none of us knew he was suffering. He was a shining ray of light, full of goodness, always happy and hopeful. It broke my heart. It broke all of our hearts. I pray that a cure will be found so that no one ever has to suffer from this disease. Thank you Dame Elizabeth for all you do.

So grateful for Ms.Anionwu. “Certain” people, always ask the question... “Why is it always about race.” Short answer ... because that’s what IT IS. It never had to be that way... but something simple as a made up social construct.. continues to tear up and down the human experience. This is why Ms. Anionwu’s contribution is so significant.

*Congratulations Dame Elizabeth Anionwu!* I applaud your efforts, strength and fortitude. Thank you for heightening awareness. Nice to see Janet Jackson who is - and always has been - my favorite solo artist. She is always graceful, dignified and kind. *I lost a very good friend (named Olevia} to Sickle Cell Anemia. We'd known each other since we were in our late teens, early twenties. I was by her bedside when she took her last breath. Her parents were told she would not live to be 10. She lived to be 57!*
