I am so happy Janet is able to carry on her Aunt's school of professional teaching methods. When I first learned how to sew, I found her Aunt Margaret's videos in the back of sewing magazines in the early '90s. She truly is the queen of home sewing the professional way. Her videos are now on DVD on Islander website so every person who wants to teach others how to sew can study these professional methods and techniques to teach newbies the right way to sew and have proper sewing ergonomics. I have and always will honor my teacher, Margaret Islander, and now her niece, Janet Pray. Their videos, now on DVD, are timeless and should be required for every sewing teacher to study who wants to teach.

I do the curve and straight sewing without even thinking about it. I have worked in a sewing factory for over 20 years. I don't remember anyone telling me how but I just figured out how to do things on my own. This validates what I do.

Thank you so much Janet. I've been sewing for more than 60 years and didn't know about the feed dogs moving the bottom layer more quickly than the foot moved the top. It makes so much sense. I am just setting up a sewing room (luxury) and will definitely be getting myself a flat bed. You are so (sew) easy to watch and listen to. Thanks from a grateful Aussie!

Hi Janet. These are great, useful tips for comfortable sewing. I use my machine's walking foot to keep fabric layers sewing/moving along at the same rate. I rarely take this amazing foot off, especially when I'm piecing and joining blocks for quilts. Wonderful for bindings, too. Works so well to keep all layers together, without any bunching. Thanks for your tutorial!

Janet Pray is the niece of the late Margaret Islander, and she has taken over where Ms. Islander left off. Pay attention and practice these professional sewing tips until you have mastered them on scraps. Then you can put them to good use when sewing your garments. These are just a couple tips that are of great importance, but try ALL of them for perfectly professional results. You can become a great seamstress/sewist, too!

Janet, you packed in more information in this short video than what I learned in a day long sewing class! I just purchased a Babylock sewing machine and a sewing table that folds up. Can I use an extension table with my current setup or is the extension table only good for sewing cabinets? Thank you in advance. I will be subscribing.

Hello Janet, I'm not sure you'll be able to answer this question since I just caught the video. My husband is building me a sewing table. I have a very small 10x10 room so thus far I've requested 26"x68" so I have room for my cutting table, a bit of room for a small press board next to my machine. I cannot do clutter, or too crowded. My question finally: I have a Babylock w/a plastic table like you show. I'm puzzled which way to go. I found when sewing & quilting in my old space the plastic table became frustrating, always pulling fabric. I had a low table, chair etc, it just didn't work for me. You mention it only briefly. How do we use if? What am I doing wrong? I have seen someone that has her entire setup, the machine w/the plastic table lowered into the table. That looked nice, but more form than function.

Up until the last two tips this video is basicly useful for 3 people '-' 2 people who will be sewing big pieces and 1 person who has the space for a whole table, or lives where getting that extra thing is possible... Those who wont be sewing big pieces, dont have all that space, dont live somewere where you can get the extra piece avaiable os just cant afford it, you can just jump to the minute 8.22 where she talks about how to sew curves, save your time

The hold method can be done without a flat surface. I use this technique all of the time even though I still pin because I have to move my fabric from one room to another. But it does keep the fabric from moving when I take out the pins. I use that method also because for me it gives me better control of the fabric.
