Thank you for making this w/positivity and not negativity. I suffer from bipolar and I can relate to how telling someone (let alone being in the public eye for all to know) that you have bipolar is a serious matter and it brings a lot of fear of not knowing how others may respond and whether someone will accept you or not. Especially as undergoing treatment becomes a life-long ordeal. I hope he has a safe enlistment and he has many fans awaiting his return!

It's a mental illness that causes shifting mood episodes of extreme highs (mania/hypomania) and very down lows (depression). There are different kinds of bipolar, I don't think it says which one he has. You can google more about it.

This was a very brave thing to do. He gave up a very private piece of himself to the public. This is not a condition anyone asks for, many people throughout the world suffer from Bipolar Dysfunction. It can be treated over a lifetime. I think Korea's mandatory military service sucks. I grew up during the Vietnam war and remember the draft. I have family that suffers from the horrors endured. It seems Koreans expect alot from their celebs. It seems they can be very supportive or cruel. I thinks it's a cultural thing as an American and Hawaiian I don't get. My heart goes out to this brave young man. Take one day at a time, never mind what others think or say that may be hurtful. Until some one walks in your shoes they have no right to condemn you. Stay focused on your goal. And May the Force Be With You!

I see a few people have responded that they too have bi-polar disorder. And as they know, -Yes there is medication for lessening the effects of it, but it can be a great struggle for some individuals. I'd imagine being in the Korean art/drama/music world would only put more stress on any one with mental health issues. And YES, Jang Keun Suk is very Brave to reveal it to the Korean public who can sometimes be very, very critical and quick to judge .

I have two friends who live with this condition. It is very challenging for both, and both have tried numerous medications and other treatment with some success, but certainly no "cure". No one wants the world to know about their particular mental and physical issues. I am sure this was difficult to put out to the public. Especially admitting this to the Korean "fans" who seem to be so very harsh and unforgiving of any personal issues a star has. With the incidence of suicide being quite high in Korea, you would think more compassion would be offered to those struggling with their mental health. I wish this young person all the best. He is a talented actor whose performances have added joy to my life.

I suffer from bipolar type 2.... ive been on medication since i was 12 cause since that age ive suffered from this disorder along with anxiety and chronic insomnia, I've somewhat been able to manage my bipolar and anxiety but i wish the insomnia was out of the picture. even with medication i cant fall asleep til 5am or later then i dont get out of bed until the evening. My heart goes out to all those people that suffer from any debilitating disorder, and bipolar is one of them.

It's a shame he was more or less forced to air his personal business in public like this. There is no way the press and the public are entitled to the information. If he chooses to share it, that's his business!!!! I've been bipolar all of my life. I've been treated for 30 years. I'm fortunate that I respond well to medication and I've been 100% compliant for that 30 years. You have to have a plan and stick to it, even if it's unpleasant at times. Think of it like diabetes.....you take your meds and communicate with your doctors, and you can lead a happy, productive life. Just because you can't see mental illness like you can a broken arm or leg doesn't make it less biology based. Meds influence brain chemistry. Brain chemistry influences moods. Mental illness doesn't automatically mean you end up on a street corner chasing aliens and talking to the voices in your head. It's a continuum, ranging from a minor bout of depression to severity that can make the person incapable of functioning. When I was diagnosed, I read a book which concluded that the prognosis for bipolar disorder was bleak. I immediately decided that no one could determine my prognosis other than me. I absolutely believe that your attitude and determination along with proper care determine your prognosis. I made the choice to not make it a big deal. I can't change whether I'm bipolar, but I can determine how I handle it. I'm comfortable and try to make others comfortable if the topic ever arises. I wear T Shirts that say things like "No one in my family suffers from mental illness. We all enjoy it," or "You're jealous that the voices only talk to me." And why not? I prefer laughing. It's amazing to see how allowing people to talk to me and ask questions puts them at ease with the topic. There are some people who never get it. My poor mother absolutely believed that I suffered from a shameful defect. I just ignored her when she started on that topic. She was born in 1919. People at that time had a different image of mental illness. Sadly, she never grew past it. I could either just accept it and move on, or get wounded and horrified. I nodded my head, made appropriate noises, and ignored her when the conversation veered in that direction. I've been married to the same man for 38 years. I have a happy, productive life. I'm a responsible adult. I also happen to be bat shit crazy. And proud of it. You don't survive unless you're determined and tough. A couple of years ago, I was riding with friends when somehow the topic came up. One friend blurted out "You're bipolar?! You don't look it." I laughed so hard I almost fell off my horse. She works in the prison system and sees the worst of the worst. We ended up discussing her experiences and mine and what's in between. We both learned from it. Had I been offended that wouldn't have happened. I suggest that anyone reading this do a casual search for bipolar people throughout history. I know I'm in the company of a lot of prominent actors, authors, artists, and scientists. Many times we're gifted with above average intelligence, creativity, musical ability, and any other gift you can imagine. Why would anyone feel bad or stigmatized? Oh yeah, the ubiquitous "them." It's really simple. Put "them" out of your mind and live your best life. Oh yeah......DAMN THE TORPEDOES! FULL SPEED AHEAD!

Mi opinión y muy personal, los estados de ánimo o bipolaridad como le quieran poner no definen el carácter o sentimientos de la persona afectada, para que tenga un comportamiento así debe haber tenido situaciones difíciles que en su momento no se percataron, pero una persona que le gusta colaborar hacer feliz a un público sin importar los defectos y virtudes que tenga la persona da una sonrisa y esperanza quien lo solicita y esta ahí para cuando sea necesario, yo no que puedo decir que su cambio de humor sea bipolaridad porque francamente el mundo entero sería bipolar con todo lo que acontece a nuestro alrededor. Hay momentos que una palabra de aliento, una sonrisa, una mirada o el simple gesto de escuchar cuando es necesario daría forma a otro sentir en el corazón de una persona juzgada, criticada y poco apreciada al decir que su diagnóstico es bipolaridad por dar un nombre y no es el decir entiendo los momentos difíciles por los que puedes haber pasado pero no importa siempre estaré ahí para ti cuando sea necesario, en conclusión el decir que su diagnóstico es bipolaridad pues me uno a el porque ser solidario.
