I know this is 3 years old, but I love this! I grew up on Gin Blossoms, REM and Polaris and didn’t put the pieces together that I loved Jangle Pop until I stumbled upon that descriptor for Gin Blossoms. I dove in head first and got into Stone Roses, Game Theory, The dB’s and basically never looked back 15 years later. I started a Spotify playlist during the pandemic and it’s gained more likes that I ever thought possible for something that I made just so I could listen to cool tunes while I work. I noticed you listed some bands that I had discovered over the last few years and that I had picked similar tracks to the ones you previewed! Makes me feel like we’re on the same wave length as Jangle Pop fans! I’d love it if you made more videos!

I ran several record shops in Seattle and SoCal in the late 70's/early 80s and forgot how much I liked so many of the bands you mentioned. Looking forward to the Paisley Underground segment. The Byrds, were my earliest favs. All the dB's and Mitch Easter produced music in the early 80's...can't be topped. Love The dB’s too! I live in New Orleans and Peter Holsapple lived here for about 10 years (up to 2005/Hurricane Katrina). He had a great band here called The Continental Drifters whom I saw at least 30 times. But what was doubly-cool was on Sunday nights Peter would often play solo acoustic shows at either Carrollton Station or the Circle Bar. At the solo acoustic shows he’d play all of his dB’s material as well as songs off of Mavericks (w/Chris Stamey), his own solo albums plus cool covers of Big Star and Nick Drake. It was through Peter’s solo acoustic shows that I became familiar with The dB’s. The dB’s along with Big Star are way up there on the list of greatest bands to go criminally under the radar (though Big Star seems to finally have gotten their credit). The Reivers!!! End Of The Day is a lost classic album imo. “Star Telegram” is such a phenomenal song. The Rolling Blackouts C.P. yessss! I definitely hear a lot of Go Betweens in them. A great “new” band for sure. Game Theory’s Lolita Nation is a definite classic. Still listen to that album a lot. “The Waist And The Knees” is awesome. The Windbreakers’ “Time Machine” is on just about every Jangle Pop compilation I make. Cool that you dig them. Love your channel! It’s the best!

Also great score on the Huxton Creepers, well done again on that find. That'd be a $30 record here. Great description on Orange Juice; very interesting the other Glasgow bands you mentioned - I guess those bands influenced the indie pop scene of the 90s in Glasgow (Belle & Sebastian, Camera Obscura etc). Dumptruck....wow...I had a friend in University that had a couple of their records and would play For The Country quite a bit. I remember liking that record. Hi Hanna. You covered some ground with this video. Quite a few I not aware of. Your video's are going to have an impact on my bank balance. Big fan of the Guru's have loads of their output, and great live. I collected most of The Postcard Records stuff from Scotland in the early 1980's, including most of the 45's. They are getting costly now as most come with inserts and postcards. Did you mention the LA's from Liverpool ?. That Australian stuff is something I will definitely check out, thanks. Your video's are so informative and enlightening. I can recommend (though more appropriate for the first video) a UK band that made a couple of LP's in the mid 1970's. Starry Eyed and Laughing. As their name suggests they are very influenced by the Byrds. Also Josef K are worth checking out. The Dentists are part of the Medway scene, loads of great bands from that area. Once again thanks for the video and all the hard work you put in making them. They are getting better and better. Gary

Darn, I lost my first response somehow! I'm typing it again. I really appreciate your thoughtful comments, Gary. Makes me feel good to know that there are fellow people like you that appreciate this type of music as much as I do! I can't wait to pick up more from the Hoodoo Guru's in time! Haha, I blame the Vinyl Community for making me overspend on music every month! I need to get my hands on that first La's record! Just added it to my list. Thank you for the reminder! Starry Eyed and Laughing definitely has me intrigued! I appreciate the other band suggestions, too! Have so much to check out. There are so many worthy bands out there! This video was a big-time labor of love! Cheers!

Hey! Love your videos. I'm from Brazil and I'd like to mention Legião Urbana, a jangle pop/post punk band that was extremely popular around here in the 80s/90s and had a mainstream breakthrough very similar to the one REM had, charting dozens of singles and releasing albums with diamond certified sales. In fact, those are the only two jangle pop bands to have such massive popular appeal that I'm aware of, and this is my favorite genre. Almost every brazilian knows who they are and can sing at least one of their songs. I recommend the songs "Há Tempos", "Quando o sol bater na janela do seu quarto", "Quase sem querer" and "Andrea Doria", and their album "Dois". Keep up with the great work!

Enjoyed this greatly! What a hoot!!!! btw Hoboken was perfect. I have personal connections to many of the bands you mentioned. Starting with the Feelies their drummer has been a life long friend of mine going back to elementary school and we were in many bands together. He was also a big musical influence on me when we would hang out and listen to records. My band Toured with Translator and later their drummer ended up joining my band, Dreams so Real were good friends, and the bassist from the Bongos Rob Norris produced our early music. Also we played shows with dump truck, Let’s Active, and the db’s. Thanks for putting a huge smile on my face today.

Hi Hanna, I kust got into 90's punk, trying to get everything I can on that style, so I admire the way you get very deep into a certian genre. You should write a book about jangle pop lol cause I don't think there are many. You made me remember a book I have about psychadelic music called "Turn your mind around". Its like you are reading that book and there's a lot of bands in there you say all the time reading this "wow, I didn't know they were psychedelic" but they kind of are. They cover a lot of stuff on that book from the 60's to the 2000's and its great. Anyway, I appreciate the fact you use samples to hear a little bit of some of those bands, good job and take care.

How can anyone not dig a DB's intro? Good morning Hanna. Crazy Rhythms was a fun listen and a super debut. Although the album that I played a lot was Only Life. The first time that I heard 'Away' I was {pun intended} blown away. Their cover of Lou Reed's 'What Goes On' is the perfect closer too. They also did a cool cover of Patti's 'Dancing Barefoot'. Mars Needs Guitars is one of my favorite album titles of all time. There has been many themes in the VC over the years. I am surprised that no one ever did 'best album names' or craziest song titles. Anyways. Side A from MNG is tops. I showed Dumptruck's debut in one of the last eight videos that I posted. It was a response for Randy's show your local bands theme. You really do seek out the gems. Good to see Blake Babies too. You were a little young when a lot of these albums were being introduced on alternative terrestrial and college radio. Crazy how many great bands were coming out back then. Do you agree? I really like the color and cover of The Dentists album. I have not heard them. Nor have I heard Spinning Coin. But this will soon change. So good to see you holding 'London O' and 'TWIC Quite Good'. Quite Good is one of my favorite comps from the eighties. Just to have Step Outside, I Smell Winter and Hopelessly Devoted To Them all on one album was a gift. I did track it down on vinyl and it sounds really good. Guadalcanal D. You are definitely flashing me back jangle pop style. A celebration and a discovery if I may. I got a few albums/bands to check out which is always my favorite thing from the updates. Well done Hanna. Part three? I'll be there~ Rob/Boston

Hi Rob! Thought you'd like this one! I need to get my hands on other Feelies records for sure. You just had great ideas for some VC threads with best album names and craziest song titles! That would be fun! I was just a youngin when many of these came out, but luckily I have an awesome uncle that helped me with my music exploration, as well as some friends in college! Lots of creativity during that time! I think you'd really love the Dentists. Nice blend of jangle and garage! The Quiet Good comp indeed is one of the most well done comps out there! Glad there were a few here you were unfamiliar with! Happy listening, Rob! Looking forward to having you back for part 3! Cheers!

Great episode 2! Keep up the great work. Looking forward to the Paisley Underground stuff in the next one. Feelies are an awesome group that hardly anyone mentions anymore and so its great to see you mention them. I have some of their later albums on cassette and they are good as well - not quite as memorable as Crazy Rhythms but still good. The singer has very Lou Reed-ish vocals. Steve Earle has some kind of jangly stuff - he's more "Americana" labeled, but he has some songs in this genre as well (his stuff is really good period, but with relation to jangle pop he has some applicable stuff). Another band that has some kind of jangly songs but who I would say would likely appeal to people who like jangle pop - Galaxie 500. From the late 80's to early 90's. Albums Today and On Fire are excellent (ok, all 3 studio albums are awesome but yeah..) Their debut single "Tugboat" is a good example of their stuff. Also have a really nifty cover of the accapella(sp?) Jonathan Richman song "Don't let our youth go to waste," super super awesome song (that G500 essentially came up with the music entirely since there's no music on the original and they did a great job making the song their own and honoring the original) and it also has very heart tugging lyrics to me. Cool to hear you mentioned some newer groups b/c I'm not as familiar with newer stuff that's come out (I'm a wee bit oldish - nearly 40, and so I haven't kept up with newer bands and releases - so definitely some new things for me to check out - thank you). Thought of one more group - not definitively jangle pop, but does veer into that territory some and again probably would appeal to folks who like J P - the band Guided By Voices. Ok - one more thing. The Aztec Camera cover of Van Halen's "Jump" is a trip and worth hearing - while I like VH also, the A C version is better I think hehe. Changes the tone of the song completely.
@TheOmahaIntrovert4 жыл бұрын
Woo hoo, you made it back for part 2! Love Steve Earle. I have 3 of his LPs. Guitar Town is my favorite, I think. I have Today from Galaxie 500 but I have been meaning to pick up more from them. Guided by Voices have a massive discography! Talented group. I think I've only heard Bee Thousand, Alien Lanes, and Universal Truths and Cycles. "Cheyenne" is a song that stays in my head forever! I absolutely need to check out Aztec Camera's cover of VH's Jump. I haven't heard the Knife album yet! Hehe, thanks for the heads up! Really appreciate your comments!

One show they played both the “Cake” and “I’ve Seen Everything” albums in entirety. The most recent tour they did both “A Happy Pocket” and “Weightlifting”. They just released a new single...hoping for a new album. Such a great underrated band. Also, the Eyelids...so, so good! Saw them open up for The Charlatans and was floored! Hi Hanna, love the Go-Betweens shoutout in part 1. Are you familiar with Grant McLennan's solo work? Horsebreaker Star is one of my favorite albums by anyone ever and IMO would fit quite well should you do a Part 4 in the series. Opening song Simone And Perry is a perfect, shimmering piece of jangle-pop. Others worth checking out IMO: - Flying Color, San Francisco mid-80s band. They did one album in 1986, self-titled and released by Frontier, that may be hard to find but worth it - I found it free for download on the net back in 09. Their bassist, Hector Penalosa, is now playing bass for the resurrected Avengers. - The Individuals, early 80s Hoboken band, contemporaries of the dBs and Feelies. Their debut album Fields is a classic though may also be hard to find. - Feelies, The Good Earth. Produced by Peter Buck and very early-REM-sounding.

One album I had thought of as being jangly was Bob Mould/Sugar - Copper Blue. Maybe, just to my ears, after the noise of Husker Du. That makes me think about the sound of Big Ben at the Westminster abbaye in London. In country rock made in california like the byrds and the roger mcguinn twelve string guitar,this jangle pop is very present for artists like carlene carter,mary chapin carpenter and a lot of nashville new country artists ,a little less oriented to pickin guitar sound .

I still need to check out more from Del Amitri. Been a little behind on that. Thanks for the suggestion on that book from Giles Smith. Need to look into it! You have great taste!
