Blind people can smell flowers, look at his alternate face (16:28), that's totally a "mhmmm, something smells nice" expression ... lovely set
@SO-ym3zsАй бұрын
Never mind that there's a vast world of sounds and textures in nature, too.
@vokhevАй бұрын
Having visited a botanical garder with a blind person, they can definitely enjoy these activities. As you said, the sound and smells are a big part of that but the descriptions by the people with them brought immense joy and there were some plants that we were allowed to touch like bushes and tree trunks. Not to mention that a person with a white cane is not necessarily completely blind and could appreciate the sights that could just be more blurry to them. I think it's a very good idea to have included this figure.

This set looks exactly like a local Orangery when was in full oporation looked exactly like this set, exact same scale to. The place is in ruins now but honestly its identical to this.
@elzekloenАй бұрын
It immediately reminded me of my father's friend, who had studied biology and went blind later in life. They'd visit botanical gardens together to feel the plants, making elaborate tape recordings of all their observations. There are a lot of characteristics of plants that you can feel, especially if they're sturdy (dead, dried out plants also work very well for this since they're a bit stronger). A lot of major plant families can be recognised in this way, if you care to take the time to learn. I'd get to come with them as a little kid and explore the botanical gardens on my own, so I have very fond memories of it. I'm not sure if I'll get this set because it's very expensive, but if I do that figure will feel like a little tribute to Klaas.
@clopecАй бұрын
If one just wants to look at a flower, why not look at a picture of a flower? A blind person can't feel the texture of a plant or smell a plant through a picture, so there is a more fundamental reason to go on-site. Accommodating guides can tailor the experience for different persons based on their needs. I visited a small border guard museum with a blind relative. Normally visitors were restricted to looking at the weapons on display, but for my relative, they made an exception, and he was allowed to touch and hold them. He got a lot more out of his visit than I, I think.
@SO-ym3zsАй бұрын
Thank you for your kind and helpful words about the visually impaired figure. Sight isn't the only way to enjoy and interact with the world. Being different can be really hard on kids (and adults), so it's nice to have different types of people represented by the minifigs.

I live in the UK and used to visit Kew Gardens fairly regularly when I was younger, so it was really interesting to see this set be revealed. This review feels surreal in how much I recognise, especially the white staircase, of which the Kew equivalent I remember vividly walking up.

Same with hearing. There are "deaf" musicians and composers, which would probably shock people who want to make the world oversimpified and binaristic.

The people complain about the blind minifig could just imagine him as someone closing his eyes to smell the flowers. It's LEGO, most things are what you make of it.
@SO-ym3zsАй бұрын
It's really sad to hear that people were complaining about it. They must have a special level of ignorance or malice to complain about a tiny figure in a toy set because it represents a visually impaired person.

@maryenthuses3088Ай бұрын
I appreciate you saying that about the diverse mini figures. Several different kids I know with different disabilities or conditions have been really excited to hear that a minifig or minidoll like them is available. Diversity and representation like that hurts no one and helps so many people.
@PoppySisАй бұрын
and even *if* you're the kind of person that utterly loathes representation of disabilities in any form-- how can you complain about new pieces being introduced? i know as a kid i would have adored the minifig legs with the prosthetic leg, for example, so many custom build opportunities it's literally just a win-win for everyone, absolutely no room to complain
@Freak80MCАй бұрын
"Diversity and representation like that hurts no one and helps so many people." This. Some people can't seem to grasp that human psychology works on the basis of people feeling more included in certain areas if they see someone like them in that area. I guess certain groups of people don't get that because for them representation is the norm everywhere so they never realized it helped them too.

Regarding the complaints of a blind character, I commented elsewhere about the recent figures with prosthetic limbs. In the past the majority of Minifigures with prosthetics were monsters or bad guys. I liked how they were showing normal people with prosthetics. For this I was called a "woke bot." So, it doesn't surprise me with the comments on the figure in this set.
@SO-ym3zsАй бұрын
I hate the term "woke" and the culture wars in general, but if "woke" means acting like a decent human being towards others, whatever their challenges or differences, then please call me "woke," and I"ll wear it as a badge of honor. Regarding prosthetic limbs, kids need to understand they are common and not a stigma (especially with so many wounded vets from Iraq and Afghantistan relying on them.)

I feel the botanical garden was made to go with the natural history museum where they both occupy a part of some city park or grounds. In many museums, there is a secondary ticket option to visit things like botanical gardens or aquariums or things like this so 17:20 makes absolute sense of how they pair together.

One of the things I love most about my adopted country of 46 years, Australia, is the thousands of little ways they make it easier for disabled people to be part of the community. We also have a world leading disability scheme which, among many other things, makes it possible for severely disabled people to participate in activities, be taken to coffee shops etc. They are part of our community. I am truly thankful I don’t have to live with that kind of burden and I support any initiative for making people aware of the need to accommodate those less fortunate than the average person. Bravo Lego!

Great review, as always! I like the fan design better for various reasons, but Lego did a solid job with this version. It's interesting and attractive and a nice expansion on or alternative to the idea behind the Friends botanical garden (one of Lego's best releases in recent years). The price is typical Lego insanity: if Lego is selling sets for twice that of comparable ones from competitors, a Lego set should theoretically be twice as good or include twice as much. Obviously, that's not the case. But if you want to pay a bunch extra for a building block set, Lego has you covered :) Either way, this blows a certain other $330 Lego set out of the water. Just night and day, to mix metaphors.
@andheАй бұрын
Glad you mentioned it being an IDEAS set at the end. I always wonder how the winners of the 10k vote feel, when their 'idea' is basically just a concept pitch that LEGO end up totally redesigning.
