Jang gives us a 44-minute review having paid $400 out of his own pocket whereas (many) sponsored reviews could barely muster 15-minute videos even though they got it early and for free. You are the gold standard, Jang. Keep it up.

In my opinion, the way Jang reviews a set is so soothing. It is practically like watching a super detailed analysis of something, where the thoughts are voiced about every little thing. I really like watching his reviews of sets that i myself have, because they give off that feeling of detail and passion in Lego.

This was the first lego set I bought in nearly twenty years. As soon as I found out it was a thing I was hit *hard* by the nostalgia. Both for the lego but also for my old interest in castles in general. Probably the most extravagant purchase I've made in that time, but I have no regrets whatsoever. It hits just the right balance of playfulness with architectural detail and semi-realism for me. A very satisfying experience to build! There was one piece missing and one piece the wrong shade of grey from the same bag. But luckily they were in places that didn't interrupt the build experience and lego sent me replacements without quibble.

Unlike Jang, when I was a kid, classic Lego Castle was my #1 favourite theme. Having just finished putting this set together, I am so happy with my $500 CDN purchase. Having some extra pieces, like an extra Queen, to augment the minifig selection certainly helps. This is going to be a centrepiece set for me forever.

15:54 This part is actually surprisingly historically accurate. Castles (at least the main stone structure) often had parts that would be inaccessible from the point of it's original construction, like rooftop towers that couldn't be reached through conventional walkways. This was so that the lord of the castle would have *temporary* access points made depending upon his, or his men's, personal preference for what would work best. They may have used ladders as access points some years, and removed them in place of wooden stairs or walkways at other points in time. I like to think that the castle is currently at an "inbetween" point at the moment, and they have torn down the ladder before beginning construction on the new walkway. This set has seemed to put a surprising degree of emphasis on realism, or at least reached an impressive degree of realism through sheer luck.

I genuinely appreciate that Jang knows about machicolations :) Also, I agree with you about how it feels opened up like that. Opened, this set feels like a classic Lego play set (one my child self would dream of owning), whereas when it's folded shut it feels spectacularly historic in the best way possible.

Heard good things about this review and finally found time to watch it. Had a goofy smile across my face the whole way through as Jang perfectly details what is an incredibly set. Man, if I had 400 euros lying around, this would be an instant buy for me. I adore this design, the details, the playability, everything. It also makes me nostalgic for the one Lego castle I did own as a kid and I remember loving the small medieval sets. Gorgeous, gorgeous set.

As always, thanks for posting the definitive review of this set. It is especially helpful to watch a review from someone who was not gifted the set by Lego and therefore can be objective when it comes to value! As for me, I hope to see this on some sort of discount one day when it eventually releases at other retailers. The Galaxy Explorer just dropped to $75 at Walmart so I suppose there is hope!

If I had this as a kid, I would have had an absolute blast, I can just imagine the countless scenarios I would have played out with this set. This set is amazing and the only thing I think needed to be added/changed is I think they definitely should have included a King minifigure to go with the queen and to really complete the selection of characters.

Thanks for the review Jang! I built this myself the past 2 weekends and I absolutely love the set! This set just dethroned Barracuda Bay and became my favourite set of all times! The build and all crazy angles of the castle, the fact that almost every space has minifigures access either via stairs or ladders is ace! I’m soon 47 years old and just like you I watched the catalogue of castle sets (and space sets) when I was a kid of the 80s and dreamed about owning them. I had classic city sets to play with but no other themes. But I’m a huge fan of the medieval period through movies and video games, so I totally dig this set. Also talking about Barracuda Bay, it’s amazing how that set is half the price of this castle, yet it feels the same size, if not slightly bigger. That just indicates how dense the castle really is built. Also thanks a lot for what you did with the food stand on top of the secret trap door, by ignoring the instructions and not placing it in the center, there is room for the beer barrel stand as well, brilliant! It’s actually so good I wonder why in the manual it’s not done that way, I actually rechecked that page and nope, Lego doesn’t tell you to do it that way. Last thing I would like to mention is that I bought my set from Lego.com in Belgium and the blue flag pieces on the side of the ox cart are all the same colour for me, just checked it in bright daylight and those 6 pieces are perfect in colour. So either I’m lucky or maybe there is a difference in the USA and European markets? (I’m sure sets for different markets get packed at different places and might get their parts sent over from different factories)

The golden age of lego castle for me was knights kingdom two and the fantasy line from 2004-2009. Amazing sets that I wish I could’ve experienced even more than I did. That would’ve been the best time to be into the theme in my opinion. Hate how expensive the sets are now.

I'm also one of the, "I had minimal interest but now love this set," people. it's absolutely stunning and i can just imagine the stories that could be told with just this set. Quite frankly, I wish I had the room for it, I would snag it in a heartbeat. Also my creativity went wild when I saw it opened up, you could easily (if you were rich) take a second copy of the set and make a much larger, nicer castle, with better rooms, with no extra pieces beyond the 2 sets worth the parts. I could also see a MOC being made, with it in the center of a big castle town, stories with the forestment, and someone causing some commotion to set war between the Falcons and Lions (or, you know, the Falcons sending an envoy for "peace" and having a big army just over the hill waiting to invade)

While I completely understand why some people would be a little upset at the price of this set, and $400 is a lot. I must admit, I love it. As a kid I loved the castle sets and used to love making my own kingdoms with them. I might be a little biased as this is the kind of set I would have wanted as a kid. I hope to see LEGO do more sets around castle theme soon aside from a one-off set every so often.

got it a couple weeks ago, such an incredible set. never bought any set this expensive (closest was the Grand Emporium at 150 bucks), but for me, being a medieval fanatic, it was so worth it. definetly should´ve been 50 bucks cheaper, but I don´t often buy lego so I felt like I could give myself this opportunity lol. bought 30 extra dragon knight figs on aliexpress (fake, i know) to make a little diorama together with an old bull´s attack set.

This is incredible. I grew up on LEGO and Castle was one of my favorite themes as a kid in the early 90s. One of the first sets I ever got at Toys R Us was the "Black Monarch's Ghost" which always stuck with me. Do not own many sets these days outside of a few pop culture pieces (Back to the Future and Ghostbusters), but this would be such a perfect nostalgia piece to display as a classic Castle fan. Love your in-depth videos. 👍

Initally I was skeptical about the opening feature, because I thought it would close up just like any other castle forming a rectangular courtyard. Now I´m so happy about the complexity and compact nature of the structure. Of course all the inside features are great and add to the experience, but the closed-up shape and structure is the clou to me.

Fun fact having just completed the set tonight after 3 days of building: in the massive extra pieces pile are 2 dark brown 1×1 round studs that can be placed onto the backpack minifigure's hands to just complete the Monty Python reference of the lacky carrying everything and banging coconuts together to pretend he has a horse. Love it so much that LEGO could give those extra parts for those of us who want to further flesh out the beloved movie reference they included.

Thank you for doing this stellar review of this really cool set. I (and many, many others) greatly appreciate all the work you put into your craft; all the review/video work we see, all you do over on Twitch, & all the behind the scenes stuff as well. Personally, I watch very few other LEGO-related channels besides yours, let alone channels w/a focus on reviews. Knowing your videos aren't sponsored and that you do buy all the sets you review w/your own money means a lot, especially to someone like me that absolutely 100% cannot afford any huge, cool, but *expensive* sets like this one. Your thoughts are genuine, truthful, and very helpful in deciding what to buy for ourselves, and the way you showcase and present everything in great detail is wonderful. The fact that they used the same shirt of the trobadour minifigure from the minifigure series as the shirt of the prince, and also used the same printed coin pueces as he did, makes me want to believe that this prince didnt want to be a prince and instead grew up to provide music to all those around the kingdom. Wow. This was really a great in-depth review Jang, I love it, one of my favorite reviews of LEGO ever. I already bought it and I purposely did not watch any pictures before buying it because I wanted to experience it all to myself alone, like in the old days before the internet was a really big thing, like I am 20 years old, so not nostalgic, but I loved the newer themes like 2009, 14, Nexo knights etc. Big fan of those. This set did not disappoint. It was really hard to not get spoiled by the experience and I do not regret it, it was an amazing build with fun easter eggs and quotes in the instruction book. My only problem is that it is not possible to open and get access when it is folded up, I would like to be able to get inside by lifting the different levels up and away so we could see how the rooms actually look like inside, IT would make sense, I even modded some of mine to be able t split some levels to get inside kind of easier. It is a great display set, but I wish they built it a couple of studs bigger to get better access, as some part is hard to access as an adult, like the stairs, ladders, etc. Again, amazing review :-)

I'm more of a mega construx fan, but ever since I was a child I've always loved Lego Castle. Most of my minecraft builds are a bavarian/medevial castle style, and it is a level of nostalgia I wish to achieve. I might get the set just for childhood nostalgia, but I haven't decided if I do, but your review has definitely swayed my opinion

I finished this set a couple weeks back and I REALLY love it. It really is great set to display or play with. My kids love it as well. My only issue with it is I would have preferred the old fashioned mini fig heads since this is supposed to be a 90th anniversary throwback set. Maybe even just included as alternates since this was so expensive. Maybe another horse as well. Jang is right though. A lot of people have complained about the price tag (at least on YT), but if you really want it and you're a Castle fan like myself you're gonna go ahead and spend that $400 USD.

A long video but enjoyed every minute of it - it’s such a beautiful and amazingly detailed set. The designers have done a fantastic job on this. Bravo.

So many things to admire in this set, thanks for your detailed review! Like the ‘straw’ under the market stall, and the roses in York and Lancaster colours may point towards war of the roses or even earliest Tudor times?- Henry vii. They look so lovely anyway.

Great review. I had watched reviews by people who received the castle from Lego and wanted to watch an unbiased review. I liked your review even better because you were not a castle fan and not star-struck by nostalgia as I am. I used to collect castle and then I switched to Star Wars and now I am back to collecting castle because of this set. This set is amazing and it has jumped the line on every other set I want.

Thanks Jang for such a detailed review of a fantastic set. I think it is a must-have for castle fans, even though the price is always kind of rough. Let's hope it stays on shelf long enough for fans to save up both money and space.

This is amazing, I wish I had the money and space. With the rings of power and the house of dragon coming out, I hope they bring back either castle or lotr sets

I've only bought a handful of sets or lego products over the last decade but I bought 2 of these. It's my favorite set of all time. So many amazing features and choices made to come up with this build that's nostalgic, yet very advanced, and also geniously, elegantly simple (unlike my sentences). Thank you for this deep dive! Best on youtube for sure, said what I felt everyone else either didn't get or left out.
